Cyprus Mail: Press Review in English, 97-12-02Cyprus Mail: Press Review in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Cyprus Mail at <http://www.cynews.com/>Tuesday, December 2, 1997Monastery needs restorationALL the Greek newspapers on Monday reported on the pilgrimage to Apostle Andreas monastery by more than 1,000 Greek Cypriots on Sunday. They also reported on the visit to the island by EU Commissioner Hans Van den Broek. Phileleftheros says that the Commissioner will mainly deal during his talks here with the issue of the participation of Turkish Cypriots in the Cyprus negotiating team with the EU. The paper says that eventhough he is not expected to put forward any proposals he will test the positions of the two sides on the issue. The paper notes that at a time when the pre-election developments in Cyprus are in full force President Clerides will not be at a position to negotiate freely. Alithia says that 1,100 Greek Cypriots made the trip to the monastery of Apostle Andreas, in the occupied area of Karpass. The paper says that the monastery needs serious restoration work after many years of occupation. On the election developments the paper says that Akel tries to mislead the electorate by isolating a single result from a poll which shows its candidate George Iacovou leading President Clerides. Simerini highlights the lack of a clear answer from Attorney General Alecos Markides as to if he will be a candidate in the February presidential elections. The paper says that Markides was only clear on the fact that it is the constitutional right of every citizen to think if they want to be a candidate in presidential elections or not. Reporting on the pilgrimage the paper says that Turkish Cypriot `policemen' boarded the buses carrying the pilgrims and handed out leaflets containing propaganda material. To Tharros says that many of the visitors to the monastery could not hide their feelings of anger because they had to ask for permission to go and pray at a Greek church. Regarding Markides' comments the paper says that the Attorney General seems to be in doubt himself as to whether he will stand for President. Agon leads on unnamed Diko sources who said that Markides has decided not to run. The paper says that following this development Diko is now discussing the names of Yiannos Kranidiotis and former minister Marios Eliades, two persons who can secure the backing of Edek as well. Haravghi accuses President Clerides of using defence issues to promote his candidacy. The paper says that during a speech to a Disy party gathering the President revealed that Eldyk now has 50 tanks with their crews in its ranks. © Copyright Cyprus Mail 1997Cyprus Mail: Press Review in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
