No surprises after Crete meeting

TWO issues seem to grab the attention of Tuesday's Greek papers. All dailies turn their attention to the decision of Diko party's decision to ask its ministers in the Clerides administration to resign by today, and the meeting between the prime ministers of Greece Costas Simitis and Turkey's Mesut Yilmaz on the sidelines of the Balkan Summit in Crete.

Phileleftheros says that Diko has all but finalised its decision to quit the governing coalition following a meeting between President Clerides and Diko leader Spyros Kyprianou Monday morning.

The paper says that Diko has already sent a co-operation proposal to socialist Edek party for the February presidential elections.

On the Crete meeting, the paper says that there were no surprises following the talks between the two premiers.

Alithia says that despite Diko's decision for its ministers to resign the party has not completely burned the bridges with Disy.

The paper notes that according to Kyprianou, if Clerides decides not to run for a second term, his party would be willing to accept the backing of Kyprianou by Disy as presidential candidate.

Simerini says that Diko has chosen to severe its relations with Disy.

According to the paper Diko is now moving full-steam to secure co-operation with Edek for the elections.

On the Simitis-Yilmaz meeting the paper notes that the two premiers decided to take steps to revive the spirit of the Madrid communique, promoting peaceful co-existence between the two Nato allies.

Agon reports that despite Diko's decision for its ministers to resign, they will probably be present at President Clerides' press conference on Thursday.

Agon also says that the visit to Nicosia by the UN chief's Cyprus envoy Diego Cordovez is doubtful following the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash's comments that he will not be available to meet the UN diplomat.

Machi reports that the police have reached the conclusion that the recently-discovered forged £20-pound notes were printed in Athens.

The paper says that the group behind the forgery have also printed Greek money.

Haravghi highlights a statement by Spyros Kyprianou that Diko will not vote for President Clerides if he decides to stand for a second term.

The paper says that Kyprianou indirectly accused Disy that their only concern is how to hold on to the presidency. Haravghi also says that Kyprianou has rejected a Disy formula to revive the collapsed coalition between the two parties.
