Clerides offers no hints on candidacy

THE main topic in Friday's Greek newspapers continued to be whether President Clerides will stand for a second term and speculation continued as to the time he will choose to announce his decision.

Phileleftheros says that the issue has developed into a thriller with various parties and political persons making their own predictions. The paper says that the President is expected to make his intentions known following his meetings with the UN chief's co-ordinator on Cyprus Diego Cordovez later this month. President Clerides was scheduled to have a meeting with Disy president Nicos Anastassiades yesterday.

In another story regarding the tourism industry the paper says that labour unions are planning to announce a general strike in all Limassol hotels on January 13, due to a labour dispute at the Azur hotel which has dragged on unresolved for some months now.

Regarding Clerides' intentions Alithia says that the President is to have in the next few days a series of important meetings to help him reach a final decision. He is scheduled to meet Disy chief Nicos Anastassiades, Attorney General Alecos Markides, Interior Minister Dinos Michaelides and Diko president Spyros Kyprianou.

Simerini seems to be more certain as to the time Clerides will make his decision about the elections known. The paper says that the crucial period for the announcement will be between today and November 15. Kyprianou told the paper that no date for a meeting with Clerides had been set until Thursday.

Machi says that President Clerides is outraged by Markides' failure to rule out any possibility to be a candidate in the February presidential elections. The paper says that a group of friends are pressuring Markides to announce his intention to stand for President regardless of the stance Clerides will take on the issue.

In another story the paper says that a Louis Tours employee has been remanded in connection with the loss of about £20,000 from the payment of tickets issued to the organisation's customers. According to the paper the employee allegedly issued tickets, was paid the money, but the money never reached the company coffers.

Haravghi says that the House of Representatives will try to introduce legislation through which they plan to stop the government from issuing title deeds to refugees for their houses in refugee estates in the free areas of the Republic. The paper says the new legislation is expected to have the support of all parties in the House except Disy.

Agon says that the countdown to Clerides' announcement that he will stand for a second term has began. The paper says that Diko president Spyros Kyprianou was to hold a press conference yesterday noon to brief the press on the latest developments in the continuing election saga.
