[01] Gul holds out hope for Cyprus settlement

TURKISH Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul yesterday held out hope for a settlement on Cyprus, despite the collapse of UN peace talks last month, and urged the European Union not to "kill" the peace process.

The Turkish government this week promised to push ahead with efforts to end the decades-long stalemate as the internationally recognised Greek Cypriot government prepares to sign a EU accession treaty on April 16.

The move could leave Turkish Cypriots isolated and undermine Turkey's EU membership bid.

"The doors are not yet closed," Gul said before talks with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in the Turkish-occupied north.

"Everybody needs to take steps forward for a comprehensive and lasting solution and for peace to be able to say the Cyprus problem has been solved.

"April 16 is not the final date for this to happen ... The EU on April 16 should not kill efforts for peace," Gul said.

U.N. Secretary-general Kofi Annan abandoned his effort to reunite estranged Greek and Turkish Cypriots after long-running talks failed to yield an agreement at The Hague in March. (R)

[02] A silent cry along the white line

Organised by Nicos Kouroushis, the event involved the laying down of a 150- metre roll of white cloth stretching from the beginning of Ledra Street almost to the Green Line. The cloth was then lined with images of children wounded during the war in Iraq.

Kouroushis said the action was “a silent cry against the unjust bombardment of innocent people, children women and men in the cities”.

“This is a reaction against the war ... It is the first in a series of events held by artists, actors, poets, and people who are sensitive to this, ” he said.

Another artist at the event said Kouroushis chose to use a white cloth because it was symbolic of the cloth used to bandage wounds and to cover the bodies of the dead. The images of the children were taken from television footage of injured civilians in Iraq's bombarded cities, and were then digitally enhanced by Kouroushis.

“He wants to show the sorrow and the reality of what is going on in Iraq,” she said.

Further projects relating to the injustice of the war will be organised by local artists in the coming weeks.

[03] Three held after attacks on police

THREE MEN have been arrested after separate attacks on policemen.

According to police a 24-year-old British soldier was arrested on Friday afternoon after head-butting a policeman in the face and fracturing his nose. The attack occurred when the policeman reprimanded the soldier for driving through a red light on Makarios Avenue in Larnaca at around 3pm. The suspect appeared to be driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

In a separate incident in Limassol on the same day, two youths were remanded in custody after an assault on two police officers. The officers were allegedly attacked after the youths were reprimanded for disturbing the peace on Ploutonos Street at around 2.40pm.

A third assault occurred in Paphos, also on Friday, when two officers were attacked by a 19-year-old man as they tried to arrest him for a driving offence. The officers were treated for their injuries at Paphos General Hospital.
