[02] ORF TELEVISION: KOSOVO LIBERATION ARMY IS FIGHTING FOR GREATER ALBANIATanjug, 1998-07-27Austria's ORF State Television said on Monday that the ethnic Albanian t errorist organisation that calls itself Kosovo Liberation Army (OVK, 1998) was fighting for the creation of a Greater Albania and not for independ ence for Kosovo and Metohija. ORF said this was indicated also by the fact that KLA members had sworn an oath on July 23. It said the OVK success in Serbia's southern province would not mean an end to the conflict in the Balkans, saying its goals w ould only trigger the spillover of hostilities to neighbouring countries. The Television said a large number of foreign mercenaries fought in the KLA ranks both from Islamic countries as well as ethnic Albanians from ne ighbouring contries, saying it was not true that the OVK included local p opulation that were allegedly only defending their homes as the Austrian public had been repeatedly informed. Numerous documents that have been seized also indicate that the OVK is b eing financed from abroad, it said. ORF also said that OVK goals and methods had reduced the terrorist organ isation's popularity in the international community whose support it had enjoyed until recently. [03] WASHINGTON POST: KOSOVO TERRORISTS FINANCED BY NARCO-MAFIATanjug, 1998-07-27Terrorists in Serbia's Kosovo and Metohija Province are being financed b y narco-mafia and arms smuggling channels abroad, the Washington Post sai d in Monday's editions. Quoting figures from German intelligence sources, which follows developm ents among Albanian immigrants, the daily said most probably as much as o ne million dollars was sent from Berlin every month to militant separatis ts in Kosovo and Metohija. Most of the funds are collected through so-called donations, exacted of all Albanian workers in Germany. Authorities in Switzerland have linked the influx of money into Kosovo a nd Metohija with narco-mafia and arms smuggling, in which Albanian immigr ants are heavily involved, the daily said. It quotes head of the narcotics department in Lausanne Pierre Dacques to the effect that as much as 90 percent of the heroin trade in Switzerland is controlled by Albanian trafficking circles. Of the 2,000 Albanians in jail for convictions on illicit narcotics traf ficking or selling, most are from Kosovo and Metohija, the official said. Dacques said Swiss police had recently traced smuggling operations by Ko sovo clans that sold heroin and bought arms illegally. The drug flow from Turkey and Albania into western Europe has increased dramatically over the past few months, suggesting an increase in arms smu ggling in the reverse direction, the daily said. Washington Post said the funds enabled the so-called Kosovo Liberation A rmy to include heavy weapons in its arsenal. In the interview carried on Monday by Skoplje daily Nova Makedonija, Gli gorov said that repeated postponements of dialogue in Serbia's southern P rovince could lead to an escalation of the conflict which would then cert ainly spread to neighboring countries. It is essential to avoid the spreading of the Kosovo-Metohija conflict t o Macedonia as its population comprises 23 percent ethnic Albanians, most ly concentrated along the border with Kosovo-Metohija, Gligorov said.
