NEWS REVIEW, REPUBLIKA SRPSKA

SARAJEVO - The president of the former convocation of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska (NSRS) Dragan Kalinic assessed the year of 1997 as a year of great ferments and the largest Serbian misfortune - discord in the RS leadership, which has been transferred to other structures of the authority, and even to the people. In his statement for SRNA Kalinic assessed that all problems could have been solved in a different way, and not violently, in spite of the RS Constitution and through foreign factors, adding that it had been thought that RS would have gone through a crises, which have been lasting for more that half a year, by means of elections.

SARAJEVO - The presiding of the Presidency of Serbian Democratic Party (SDS) Aleksa Buha said in Pale that the concept of Mladen Ivanic for the composition of the new government was "ridiculous". At the press-conference Buha assessed that Ivanic' concept, according to which the new government would consist of two parts and function on the basically unique platform, is in fact combining of incompatible elements, and that such a government could not function.

BELGRADE - The chief of the General Staff of RS Army General-major Pero Colic stated for "Blic" that the failure of the Constitutive Session of the National Assembly in Bijeljina was consequence of frivolous and irresponsible behaviour of the representatives. Warning that all misunderstanding in Serbian people affect RS alert and defence, Colic said that Serbian Army would try to preserve unity.

SARAJEVO - RS Government announced that January 6, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 19 and 27 are state holidays, as well as January 1 and 16 are free days. In the government's decision, made in accordance with the Law on Saint Patron's Days and Holy Days, it is cited that working days are January 2, 3, 5, 12 and 13, and all days from January 20 to the end of the month, except for January 27.

BANJALUKA - The spokesman of SFOR for the sector South-West Paul Jung stated in Banjaluka that the British Department for International Development will in the next three months in the western part of RS realise two projects worthy 420,000 DEM, whose aim is revitalisation of enterprises and increasing the number of employees. The spokesman of IPTF for the Banjaluka and Bihac region Alun Roberts stated that in the year of 1997 important progress in field of freedom of movement between entities was achieved, but far more vehicles and people were going from B&H Federation to RS than in the opposite direction.

BIJELJINA - RS president Biljana Plavsic wants, by the proposal of Mladen Ivanic as the mandatory of the Government and with help of the International Community, to impose a Government of so-called "national salvation", where Muslim would be included too, and that would bring Serbian people in these regions to hopeless and desperate situation. This was stated by the president of Steering Board of Serbian Radical Party of RS Mirko Blagojevic at the press-conference in Bijeljina.

KOTOR VAROS - The organisation of Serbian chetniks "Ravna Gora" of RS warned that the proposal of RS president Biljana Plavsic to appoint Mladen Ivanic as a mandatory of the new government was one more imprudent and irresponsible move which could have unforeseeable consequences for RS and Serbian people. Statement of the Organisation warns that previous political acting of Mr. Ivanic was based on the theories of Broz' communist ideology and ideas of multi-ethnic and integral B&H, which is opposed to strategic national interests of Serbian people in RS.
