  • [01] PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC RECEIVES AMBASSADOR OF FRANCE

President of the Republic Slobodan Milosevic received yesterday the newly- appointed, extraordinary and plenipotentiary Ambassador of France to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Stanislas Filiole. Satisfaction was expressed because of the successful development of the bilateral cooperation between our country and the Republic of France. It was underlined that Yugoslavia and France are attaching great importance to the strengthening of friendly relations and mutual confidence, on the basis of equality and firm orientation towards peace and stability in the world, as well as to strengthening of the process of linkage between states and peoples. President Milosevic wished the Ambassador of France success in his mission in Belgrade.

[02] BRCKO - THE KEY TO WAR AND PEACE

Ever since the main arbiter Robert Owen announced the possibility for Brcko to be placed under the international protectorate, this city had become the focus of attention of the entire world public. The spirits actually, were greatly disturbed from the very moment when Serbs from the Republic of Srpska told Mr. Owen that there can be no bargaining about this city and that no protectorate whatsoever is possible. Realizing that passing of such a decision would mean a new war, the main arbiter Owen extended the deadline for the final decision until February 15, 1997. That the anxieties of Serbs from the Republic of Srpska were not groundless and that around Brcko some strange games are being played, is also confirmed by the latest information coming from the Croat side. Showing until now that they are not interested in entering the verbal duel between Serbs and Muslims, the Croats in the latest edition of the "Hrvatska revija" ("Croat Magazine") are openly admitting that Brcko "is the key to the new war or to final peace", and that "the one who loses Brcko in some way is also losing Bosnia- Herzegovina".

[03] CARE FOR THE NEW GENERATIONS

Federal Minister and President of the Federal Commission for Cooperation with the UNESCO, Margit Savovic, stated that the rights of children and their protection will be one of the priorities of the policy of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. By adopting the Declaration of the Federal Government on the protection and promotion of the right of child in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on December 12 this year, this has marked a successful completion of one year of work on the Yugoslav plan of action for children until the year 2000 and onwards, said Margit Savovic. National action plan should make possible better analysis of the state of protection and development of children, increase of resources and better management over funds allocated to children, a greater responsibility of the institutions and local authorities in the change of policies for improvement of quality of life of children and youth. Elaboration of this plan started in a very difficult period, when because of sanctions, secession and a war environment, there was a drastic fall of economic activities, employment and a standard of living of the population. In spite of all this, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as a country-signatory of the Convention on the Rights of Child and the World Declaration on Protection of Children and Youth, is the first among the former Yugoslav republics to pass this program.

[04] GROWTH OF PRODUCTION OF 7.3 PERCENT

During the eleven months of this year, in comparison with the same period last year, the industrial production was increased for 7.3 percent, reported Mirjana Rankovic, deputy director of the Federal Institute for Statistics. In this period the growth of production was recorded in metallurgy (44.4 percent) and in the production of non-metals and construction materials (26.3 percent). In the sectors which have so far recorded the fall of production (textiles, leather goods, rubber, food stuffs industry, tobacco production) there was a stabilization and even a significant growth of production.

[05] CHINESE DELEGATION IN THE CHAMBER OF ECONOMY OF SERBIA

Economic delegation of the Chinese province of Heilondjijang, headed by the Deputy Secretary General of the Government of that province, Cai Dji, had talks in the Chamber of Economy of Serbia with the representatives of our companies about the promotion of the trade exchange and possibilities of industrial cooperation. Together with the information about the economic capabilities of China, the guests have especially underlined their interest for import of steel, fertilizers, raw materials for textile industry, machines and equipment. It was agreed that our businessmen in June next year, on very favorable conditions, will take part at the general fair in Harbin, at which they were until now presented only through the information material.

[06] A TRADITIONALLY INDEPENDENT DEVELOPMENT PATH

Yugoslavia and Serbia have had their own interior development and course of political events, and the events taking place now are greatly different from the ones in the Eastern European countries over the past years. This is stated in the commentary of "The Washington Post" in which, as on a very few occasions over the past days, a broader and a fuller picture is offered to the American public about the events taking place in Yugoslavia. The commentator states historical facts about the independent politics of Yugoslavia in comparison with the countries of the Eastern European block after World War Two. For such a political path there is a broad political support in Yugoslavia, underlines the newspaper, admitting the fact that war in the vicinity and economic sanctions have caused great economic stagnation of the country. The newspaper also underlines some views on the present-day Serbian opposition. It writes that over the past years it was often having nationalistic coloring, that its targets are narrow and that it has gathered only one part of the so-called middle class and a part of the civil intelligentsia. "The New York Times" reports on the calls of the leaders of Serbian opposition for help from abroad. During a number of talks in the United States they were asking for assistance for the realization of their political targets and the support of foreign circles, even when such a support, as was reiterated on several occasions, would mean an isolation and a difficult life of the citizens of Yugoslavia.

[07] PRIMAKOV: EVENTS IN BELGRADE ARE INTERIOR AFFAIR OF YUGOSLAVIA

Russia "has the stand towards the latest events taking place in Belgrade as towards an interior affair of Yugoslavia", stated Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Yevgeny Primakov. He expressed his support to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy Lamberto Dini who recently visited Belgrade and had talks with the President of Serbia Slobodan Milosevic. Russia welcomes the idea of inviting to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia the mission of the O.S.C.E. in order "to assess the situation", said Primakov. In this he underlined that everyone is concerned with the problem of human rights everywhere and democratization of this or that society, but that this should not grow into interference in the interior affairs of another state. According to the Interfaks report, Primakov pointed out at the fact that the opposition had refused the proposal of President Milosevic to have negotiations at a round table. "I think that the world community should correctly assess this move by Slobodan Milosevic and the fact that he is not applying force towards the opposition", said Primakov and added that "all this should have an adequate reflection in the world public opinion and the reactions of the other states".

[08] YUGOSLAVIA'S PLACE IN THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE

President of the Chamber of Citizens of the Federal Assembly, Milomir Minic, received yesterday the delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe headed by its Vice President Andrash Barsoni. Members of the delegation stated that the purpose of their visit is continuation of the dialogue with the Federal Assembly. They emphasized that they are attaching great importance to the visit to our country, because it is the best way to be informed of the stands of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on the implementation of the peace process and the situation in the country and in the region. Minic pointed out that the basic targets of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, further to the support to strengthening of peace, stability and a dynamic economic development in the region in general, is the equitable cooperation with other countries, an active participation in all the international organizations and integrations. It was mutually stated that it is necessary for the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, i.e. its Federal Assembly, to take part in work of the Council of Europe and its Assembly. Delegation of the Assembly of the Council of Europe announced that at its January session, which will debate the implementation of the Dayton Accords, the delegation of the Federal Assembly will be invited to attend.
