    [02] President Emil Constantinescu is in New York to attend the special MILLENNIUM SUMMIT

    Before leaving for New York the President of Romania said that the special 55-th session of the United Nations under the motto MILLENNIUM was organized and prepared in order to answer the challenges which the Third Millenium is posing the entire mankind. The President of Romania will also participate in the meeting of heads of state of the area ROAD OF SILK during which the issue will be discussed to launch a satellite for digital communications for the countries of Central Asia, the Caucasus and Central Europe, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    Today the President of Romania signs during the official luncheon given by United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan three protocols to international understandings referring to child's rights and abolishment of all discriminations against women.

    [03] Petre Roman met in Brussels with Javier Solana and Gunther Verheugen

    Romanian foreign minister Petre Roman met in Brussels with the high representatative for foreign policy and joint security of the United Nations, Javier Solana, to discuss security strengthening in Europe and building security in the Balkans as well as the way Romania could contribute to the process. During Tuesday's programme the Romanian foreign minister also had a meeting with the European commissioner for expansion Gunther Verheugen. Prime of place was given to the regime of visas for the Romanian citizens. In the context Petre Roman suggested the Council of Ministers of the European Union to renounce visas for the Romanian citizens thus allowing them to freely circulate in Europe as Romania is taking over all responsibilities of the European Union on the control of frontiers, drugs illegal transfrontier transport and illegal immigration, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    [04] Bucharest visit of the Italian defense minister

    The Italian defense minister Sergio Mattarella started a visit to Bucharest on Tuesday at the invitation of his Romanian opposite number Sorin Frunzaverde. The two Cabinet ministers are trying to establish areas of collaboration in the domains of defense policy, weapon industry, defense technologies and equipment, drilling of troops and military education.

    Mr. Mattarella will be received by the Romanian Prime Minister and he will have talks with the Chairmen of the Committees for Defense, Publlic Order and National Security of Romanian Parliament informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    [05] Multinational exercise AUTUMN DREAM

    As part of the AUTUM DREAM mutinational exercise organized by the General Headquarters of the Romanian Army in county Constanta participating are 600 troops and 40 planes of six NATO states as well as eight partners. The exercise concludes on 15 September and then there will be a national exercise to test command and control of the Romanian army and efficiency of weaponry, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    [06] Statement of Andrei Chiliman, member of the Central Permanent Bureau of PNL

    National Liberal Party's Andrei Chiliman said that the good intentions of his party to sign a non aggression pact with all political parties with a view to the fair unfolding of the forthcoming elections is above all reproach, proof of the very good intentions of the National Liberal Party being also the fact that the leadership of the party did not take action with the Prime Minister in any way after Finance Minister Remes left PNL; in this way the Prime Minister could judge without any pressure and make the best decision for the Cabinet and for the country. Mr. Chiliman then said that the leadership of the party was surprised at the negative reaction of the Democratic Party, a team-mate of the present coalition, in connection with the non aggression pact, whereas PDSR which is in the opposition answered positively and so did UDMR which is in the coalition of the encumbent power.

    [07] Ship owners and river harbor operators are asking for measures to make the river Danube navigable again

    Efforts should be made by the Cabinet of Bucharest so that the river Danube be navigable again in two months at the most the efforts being in the diplomatic sphere in the first place, say ship owners and river harbor operators. As a protest measure the Association of ship owners and harbor operators are blocking the river in their turn including the Novisad area where the bombed bridge prevent sailing on the river. Another demand refers to reparations for losses suffered in the wake of the war in former Yugoslavia.

    [08] Index-link commission of the Government of Romania in session

    The National Index-link commission of the Government of Romania met in session at the seat of the Government with Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu attending, for negociations and talks on the establishment of the ceiling of the lowest salary of the Romanian economy.

    The President of the Commission said among other things that experts rallied in a team representing the Cabinet of Bucharest,the Trade Unions and the employers union are starting work on Thursday with the aim of index- linking salaries for the last five months of the years by 33 per cent.

    [09] CALENDAR

    The President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, is in New York for the official opening of the summit of the Millennium, the 55-th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

    Today is a full day as the President of Romania also meets with the President of Argentina, Fernando de la Rua and with the Prime Minister of Ireland, Bernie Ahern.

    Then Mr. Constantinescu goes to meet with Jimmy Greenfield, columnist and with Tina Rosenberg, editor for Central and Eastern Europe at THE NEW YORK TIMES; then comes the official lunchen offered by Kofi Annan, secretary general of the United Nations to be followed by the meeting of the French speaking countries chaired by Jacques Chirac at the seat of the United Nations. In the evening the President of Romania together with Mrs. Nadia Constantinescu are among the guests of the reception party offered by the two co-chairmen of the special United Nations session, the presidents of Finland and Namibia. The day concludes with the dinner at CENTURY CLUB with the participation of both Romanian and American personalities.

    Visit to Romania of the President of the World Council of the Greek Diaspora, Andrew Athens, who is accompanied by the president of the European Diaspora, Anghelos Aslanidis.

    Romanian foreign minister Petre Roman is meeting in Paris with members of the Socialist Party of France , with Finance Minister Laurent Fabius and with the minister for European Affairs, Pierre Moscovici.

    Romanian Minister of Justice Valeriu Stoica comes back home after his visit to Turkey.

    The National History Museum of Romania hosts the launching of the volume BEFORE AND AFTER THE VIENNA DIKTAT by Aurel Sergiu Marinescu.

    The rock group IRIS and opera soprano Felicia Antip are performing in the symphony concert ATHENAEUM at the Romanian Opera House of the town of Cluj- Napoca.
