    [02] Bucharest visit of the IMF Chief negociator for Romania

    Chief negociator of the International Monetary Fund for Romania, Emanuel Zervoudakis will meet during his stay in Bucharest with Cabinet members and with various personalities of the economic and social life, representatives of the trade unions included. Mr. Zervoudakis wishes to get as many data as possible from all social categories of this country. Spokesperson of the Cabinet Mrs. Firea told media that the Prime Minister and the guest from the IMF already met and had a talk during which Mr. Isarescu presented Mr. Zervoudakis data on the stage of fulfilling the objectives assumed as part of the stand-by accord.

    [03] Ambassador of the United States to Romania Rosapepe starts promotional tour of Transylvania

    Mr. Rosapepe is in Transylvania on a promotional tour to promote this part of Romania, after he made similar tours to the other regions of the country, for prospective United States investors. His Excellence the United States ambassador visited United States - Romanian companies of the town of Cluj and attended the official opening of the RECOGNOS CALIFORNIA company which is specialized in information technology. Mr. Rosapepe stressed that information collaboration must intensify between the two countries as this is one of the ways to prosperity of Romania. In the following days Mr. Rosapepe visits counties Bistrita Nasaud and Salaj.

    [04] Visit of the president of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - to Germany

    President of PDSR Ion Iliescu met during his visit to Germany at the invitation of COMMERZBANK with representatives of the management of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Frankfurt and with the president of the European Central Bank. Mr. Iliescu also met with Mr. Helmut Fritz who is the chairman of the administration council of the TREFF hotel chain who said his company is interested in investing in our country, Romania.

    [05] ROLE OF MASS MEDIA IN PREVENTING CONFLICTS

    This is the theme of the summer school organized by the Foundation of the Black Sea and the Euroregional Center for Democracy at the Hotel Riviera of Mamaia. The interval is between today and 3 September. Participating are young people of various walks of life and various professions who are interested in developments of Southern Eastern Europe, European Union and in the promotion of cooperation between and among the countries of our European region.

    Today a round table is organized with the participation of Professor Mircea Malita, Ambassador Sergiu Celac, Ambassador Vasile Sandru, higher education students and newsmen.

    [06] Prime Minister Isarescu answers today the letter of the president of the National Liberal Party

    Spokesperson of the Cabinet of Bucharest said the Prime Minister answers today the letter of the president of the National Liberal Party, Mircea Ionescu Quintus in which the latter asks the first to answer whether he is an independent Prime Minister and then asks him to dissociate himself of the statements made by the Finance Minister of the Cabinet, Decebal Traian Remes. Mrs. Firea added that the Prime Minister will also give more details today.

    [07] Launch of the candidacy to presidency of PDSR leader Ion Iliescu

    Social Democracy Party leader Ion Iliescu's candidacy to the presidency of Romania was launched at the Diplomatic Club of Bucharest. In the appeal which he read on this occasion the first vicepresident of PDSR Adrian Nastase said Romania needed Ion Iliescu as he was a candid, direct person, observes and appreciates differences of opinions, he stands for dialog and does offer Romania the guarantee of a come-back to normality. We will never forget - said Mr. Nastase in his address - the devotion and responsibility with which Ion Iliescu took action during the very difficult moments of the Romanian revolution when the country was threatened by chaos.

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu answers today the letter of the National Liberal Party leader Mircea Ionescu Quintus. The letter of the President of PNL to the PM of the Bucharest Cabinet asks Mr. Isarescu to give a clear answer to the question whether he is an independent Prime Minister and to refute publicly the statements made by Finance Minister Decebal Traian Remes.

    State Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Petre Roman is attending the ceremony of the signing of the note of the Chinese and Romanian Foreign Ministries according to which the sum of five million Yuan which equals 600, 000 USD is given by the Chinese side to the Romanian party. The Note is signed by secretary of state Stelian Oancea from the Romanian side and by the Chinese Ambassador to Romania Chen Delai.

    Meeting of the Interdepartmental Committee for Romania's integration in NATO chaired by secretary of state Mihai Razvan Ungureanu followed by statements to the media.

    As part of his visit to Germany the president of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - Ion Iliescu visits the World Exhibition 2000 and meets with Mrs. Rita Susmuth, former president of the Bundestag.

    The Ambassador of the United States to Romania, James Rosapepe, flies to Bistrita to explore new opportunities for the prospective investors of the United States and to participate in a live programme of RADIO TRANSILVANIA ( RADIO CLUJ ) which is one of the regional radio stations of the ROMANIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION.

    As part of the Summer School THE ROLE OF MASS MEDIA IN PREVENTING CONFLICTS which is unfolding at the hotel RIVIERA of the resort of Mamaia under the organization of the BLACK SEA Foundation and the Euro Regional Center for Democracy, a round table is organized with the participation of Professor Mircea Malita, Ambassador Sergiu Celac, Ambassador Vasile Sandru, higher education students and young journalists.

    Later today the grants JTI are given by the Fredom House and United Information Center with the support of the national air company of Romania TAROM.
