[02] First vicepresident of PNL - the National Liberal Party - stands for
the further remaining in office of the present Prime Minister Mugur
Isarescu after the elections in the fall in Romania
Mr. Valeriu Stoica stands for a positive campaign which is based on
political offers and not on attack. At the same time Mr. Stoica has said
that his party could negociate with all parties including PDSR for the
continuation of the job of Mr. Isarescu at the head of the Bucharest
cabinet. Mr. Stoica also said that this initiative should be validated by
the extraordinary congress of PNL on 18 August.
[03] Secretary General of PNTCD Remus Opris is of the opinion that CDR 2000
and the National Liberal Party should conclude a non aggression pact with a
view to the future elections in the fall
Mr. Opris says that this protocole should cover both the parliamentary and
the presidential elections while the same protocole should also include a
paragraph that provides for reciprocal support in the second ballot. The
first vicepresident of PNTCD Ioan Muresan says that Valeriu Stoica is not
the whole party, namely the PNL - National Liberal Party - adding that no
confruntation is needed betwen PNTCD and PNL in the future electoral
process.
[04] Petre Roman, candidate of the Democratic Party is sure he will be the
future president of Romania
At Cluj Mr. Roman said he would contend in the second ballot with the
candidate of PDSR Ion Iliescu whom he would defeat eventually. Mr. Roman
also believes that the Democratic Party will get 16 per cent of the
parliamentary seats to which added would then be another six per cent
remaining from the parties that would not get over the ceiling admitting
them to the Parliament of Romania. In as far as preelectoral alliances are
concerned the PD leader Petre Roman said an alliance with PDSR could be
considered if in the latter mentioned party a reform of the political
thinking will take place.
[05] Adrian Nastase had meetings and talks in Los Angeles at the Convention
of the Democratic Party
The first vicepresident of the Social Democracy Party of Romania, Adrian
Nastase, has had meetings and talks with personalities of the United States

the National Convention of the Democratic Party which is unfolding in Los
Angeles. Adrian Nastase had a short official talk with the United States
President Bill Clinton at the dinner of the National Democratic Institute
as well as with the Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, with the Mayor
of Los Angeles, with the Democratic Senator Diane Finchstein and with Leon
