    [02] Presidential counselor Zoe Petre rejects allegations of the PNL vicepresident Puiu Hasoti

    Zoe Petre rejected accusations of vicepresident of the National Liberal Party - PNL - Puiu Hasoti according to whom the President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, would make pressure on Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu to dismiss Justice Minister Valeriu Stoica. Mrs. Petre said those were fabrications as the president did not make any pressure on anybody for anything and it was on him that pressures were made when the National Liberal Party attempted to merge with a certain party in the opposition. Mr. Hasoti did not reveal the source of his information despite the fact that the Presidential counselor Zoe Petre asked him to come forward with the source.

    [03] Signs of stabilization of the Romanian economy

    STANDARD AND POORS released data relating to the stability of the Romanian economy and political activity. Despite a number of difficulties still persisting the agency is convinced that the economic reforms of Romania will continue also after the elections late this fall as the key objective of Romania is our country's adherence to the European Union. Following the latest analysis of the agency STANDARD AND POORS the rating of the Romanian Commercial Bank improved from negative to stable.

    [04] Romanian foreign minister said the attitude of the Belgrade officials was unacceptable

    In an interview to ANTENA 1, Petre Roman, Romanian foreign minister said the attitude of the officials in Belgrade was unacceptable in as far as they did not agree to the repair of the destructions caused by the NATO bombing last year. Mr. Roman was of the opinion that the river would be clean of debris in two to three weeks from the day president Milosevici gives the green light to cleaning operations. Romanian foreign minister added that the Yugoslav president should understand that the situation could no longer continue.

    Back to the USA after his visit to Canada Mr. Nastase is now in Texas where he is promoting Romanian - American relations.

    Today the foreign minister of Romania Petre Roman swims a segment of the Romanian sector of the river Danube alongside the Slovenian sportsman Martin Strel who swims the entire length of the river of 2860 km in token of support for freedom of navigation on the river.

    Mayor of the capital city of Bucharest, Traian Basescu, meets with managers of various companies and businessmen that wish to support the proper opening of the school and academic year of Bucharest, particularly by the cleaning and preparation of school buildings of our capital city.

    On the occasion of NAVY DAY, the Romanian Naval league invites all those interested to attend a whole day of festivities at the National Military Circle of Bucharest including a painting exhibition and a concert as well as a party in the evening as tomorrow is NAVY DAY.

    [07] ANNIVERSARIES AND COMMEMORATIONS

    1895 - inauguration of the railway bridge of Cernavoda whose construction began on 14 September 1890 and which was designed and built by Anghel Saligny; the bridge was 3850 m long and was the longest of Europe of that time. There are 105 years since then.

    In 1916 Romania declared war on Austro-Hungary and thus joined the hostilities of World War 1.
