  • [01] Senate proceedings

    At its session on Thursday, the Senate debated the draft law on meteorology. The document is part of the legal package to be adapted to the EU legal system. The senators adopted only a half of the number of articles in the law as Senate deputy speaker Ulm Spineanu had to suspend the session given the lack of quorum. The senators are to resume the session next Monday at 3 PM.

    [02] Cabinet meeting <P ALIGN=JUSTIFY> At its meeting on Thursday, the Romanian government approved the setup of an interministerial committee to monitor the markets and services and ensure the consumer protection. The committee is expected to work with the country's Industry and Trade Ministry. The Cabinet also approved three special programmes for disfavoured regions such as Bucovine, Filipesti, Rovinari, Jiu Vallet, Baia Mare and Western Mountains. The programmes include an agriculture project, a project designed to encourage businesses in the areas, and a programme aimed at supporting and encouraging investments. The government also adopted the draft law ratifying the World Labour Organisation's Convention against child labour. RADOR

    [03] Opening of the Tinmec 2000 National Fair in Eforie Nord

    The 20-th edition of the Tinmec 2000 National Fair of metaL-chemical products opened in the Black Sea resort of Eforie Nord yesterday under the auspices of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania and the City of Bucharest. Participants include 300 manufacturers and importers of consumer goods in the country. RADOR

    [04] Picketing of the Government Building and other ministries

    The National Confederation of the Romanian Mining Trade Unions started the picketing on Thursday of the Government Building, and the buildings of the Industry and Trade Ministry and CONEL. Trade union leader Marin Condescu says that the trade unionists' demands include the 3,800 billion lei pay of coal deliveries operated by the Oltenia Coal Company and National Coal Company of Ploiesti to CONEL, the approval of an insurance programme, no more lay-offs, provision of alternative jobs, new jobs, and financial resources to prevent the economic desaster in the mining regions. Trade union leader Condescu said the picketing would end only in case of an agreement between ministry officials and trade unionists. RADOR

    [05] Czech President Vaclav Havel on a visit to Bucharest

    Czech President Vaclav Havel visited Romania yesterday following an invitation by his Romanian counterpart Emil Constantinescu. The official talks concentrated on trade issues, and the two countries' strategic interests in developing co-operation to fight organised crime and encouraging relations as part of the CEFTA Agreement. The Romanian president praised the Czech Republic's decision to rule out entry visas for Romanian citizens. The Czech president met also Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu. In an interview with the RRA, President Vaclav Havel pointed out the historic chance of the European integration while mentioning that, sooner or later, Romania was expected to join the European and Euro- Atlantic structures.     [06] Romanian participation in a conference on NATO's role in ensuring European security

    Romanian Foreign Minister Petre Roman and State Secretary Mircea Plangu are in Lithuanian capital Vilnius today to attend a conference on NATO's role in changing the European security. The conference was co-hosted by Lithuania and Slovenia, and participants included NATO Secretary general George Robertson. Today, Foreign Minister Petre Roman is expected to address the conference, and sign a political declaration confirming NATO's commitment to further promote the policy of extension and integration.     [07] Co-operation agreement between RADIO ROMANIA and the CZECH RADIO

    The Press Centre of the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation (SRR) hosted yesterday the signing ceremony of a co-operation agreement between RADIO ROMANIA and the CZECH RADIO. The document was signed by the SRR deputy director general Paul Grigoriu and Vaclav Kasic, director of the Czech Public Radio. The agreement includes an exchange of musical programmes, an exchange of journalists, and a series of programmes aimed at developing contacts in the future.

    [08] The Pope celebrated his 80-th anniversary

    Pope John Paul II celebrated his 80-th anniversary on Thursday, a day of celebrations for all the Roman Catholics around the world. Patriarch Teoctist, the head of the Romanian Christian Orthodox Church, sent a telegram to the Vatican congratulating the Pope on the occasion while recalling the visit he paid to Romania last year. Patriarch Teoctist expressed the hope that God would bless the Pope's efforts to strengthen the relations between all Christian churches around the world. RADOR
