[01] Meeting at the Presidential Palace of Cotroceni
Romanian president Emil Constantinescu met the players of the Romanian
national and European handball teams at the Cotroceni Palace on Sunday. The
event, the first of the kind, is part of Romania's efforts to prepare for
the fourth edition the Handball World Championship due in Bucharest and
Ramnicu Valcea in December this year. On the occasion, the president of the
European handball Federation, Stefan Holgvist, presented President
Constantinescu with a copy of the Golden Plate, the trophy to be given to
the winners of the championship. RADOR
[02] Statement of PNL first vicepresident Valeriu Stoica on laws designed
to accelerate the reform of the Romanian justice system
The first vicepresident of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Valeriu Stoica
announced that decisive talks are expecteed between the partners in the
governing coalition, the Chsitian Democrat National Peasant Party (PNTCD)
and the Democrat Party (PD) especially, concentrating on ways to promote
the package of laws designed to accelerate the reform of the justice
system. On Sunday, Justice Minister Valeriu Stoica attended the
inauguration of the building to host the tribunal in Babadag, the district
of Tulcea. RADOR
[03] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu on a visit to Brussels
While on a visit to Brussels today, Romanian Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu
is expected to meet EU and NATO officials. The talks are aimed at settling
the date when the European Commission whould be presented with Romania's
action plan to implement the country's medium term strategy in its attempt
to join the EU. The final version of the document is still to be approved
by the government at a meeting next week. Along with EU officials and
representatives of donor countries, Prime Minister Isarescu is expected to
discuss a series of measures aimed at answering the problems of Romania's
institutionalised children. The prime minister's agenda also includes
meetings with the Belgian counterpart and NATO Secretary General George
Robertson. RADOR
[04] The Adrian Costea Affair
PD leader Petre Roman has admitted he heard about the affair around the
"Everlasting and Fascinating Romania" album, and therefore he rejected the
proposals of economic and political reforms in a letter he received from
businessman Adrian Costea. Petre Roman indicated he had no contacts with
Adrian Costea, and the PD was in no way involved in the affair. However,
the Romanian and international press both believe that PD leader Petre
Roman was the only one to benefit from the row around Adrian Costea.

Despite the PDSR leaders' promise not to make any further comment about the
so-called "French Connection" scandal, the party's vicepresident Adrian
Nastase mentioned the matter at a press conference in Satu Mare. Nastase
admitted he should have been more careful about it. He insisted he
travelled to France to attend a meeting of the Council of Europe and then
meet Adrian Costea who had a series of projects to discuss, and it was
Costea paid for the trip. The French lawyers in Bucharest mentioned the
names of Adrian Nastase and his wife on the list of the people they would
like to meet for a hearing in connection with their accomodation at the
Normandie Hotel in Deaville between December 4 - 6, 1998. The Groupe
Saintonge Edition, identified as publisher of the "Everlasting and
Fascinating Romania" album, paid 4,625 FFR for the accomodation of the
Nastases in Deaville. RADOR
[05] Predeal: international seminar on minority protection
An international seminar on minority protection as a condition for European
integration has ended on Sunday in the Romanian resort of Predeal with a
documentary visit to the districts of Brasov and Sfantu Gheorghe where
participants met representatives of the Romanian Hungarian and German
minorities. The seminar was organised by the government's Department for
minority affairs in co-operation with the European Commission and the
Council of Europe. The seminar was aimed at identifying solutions to answer
the minority problems both through government's efforts and European
institution's assistance. Similar meetings are expected in Croatia and
Slovenia in the near future. RADOR
[06] Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden
Denmark is the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest organised in Sweden
yesterday. The Romanian pop group Taxi came 17-th out the 24 participant
countries. The show was broadcast in 33 countries for an estimated audience
of 700 million people in Europe, Australia and Japan. RADOR
[07] Earthquake in Vrancea
An earthquake of 3.9 on the Richter scale was reported saturday night at
2:36 AM in the county of Vrancea. According to a communique issued by the
National Institute for Earth Phisics, the earthquake hit a magnitude of 3
degrees on Mercalli scale at 80 km. underground. No damages were reported.
