  • [01] Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister's Visit to London

    Foreign affairs minister Petre Roman, who is paying an official visit to London, met the chairmen of the two Houses of the British Parliament, representatives of the royal family, representatives of the financial and banking milieus in the City, and attended a dinner offered by his counterpart, Robin Cook. Petre Roman said during a press conference on Tuesday that the Romanian-British political relations were excellent. The Romanian minister said his country was very interested in increased direct British investments, adding the economic reform in Romania was well directed and would continue. RADOR

    [02] Defense Minister's Statement Concerning the Postponement of the Dutch Defense Minister's Visit to Romania

    Defense minister Victor Babiuc said the Dutch defense minister's visit to Romania, scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed, because the Foreign Affairs Ministry notified the Embassy in the Hague to send a message in this respect. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs that Babiuc stressed he had nothing to do with this postponement, the first such case recorded. RADOR

    [03] Results of Mihai Razvan Ungureanu's Visit to Trancarpathia

    Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, state secretary in the Foreign Affaire Ministry, told reporters in Baia Mare the visit payed by a Romanian delegation to Transcarpathia allowed the identification of the best projects aimed at repairing the infrastructure in the region, that would contribute to the area's increased role along the 4th European transport route, and to a direct access to the communication links between the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. During the talks with the regional authorities in Ukraine, Ungureanu insisted on supporting culturally the Romanian ethnic minority by financing a newspaper in Romanian, increasing the time of the radio and TV broadcasts in Romanian, and publishing books in Romanian. Ungureanu said, quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI: "We are interested that the Romanian population North of the river Tisa maintain their identity and show the same loyalty to the Ukrainian state".     [04] The Moldovan Foreign Affairs Ministry Criticizes the Decision of the Romanian Authorities Regarding Applications for Romanian Citizenship

    The Moldovan Foreign Affairs Ministry disagrees with the fact that Romania decided, without consultations with the authorities in Chisinau, to indirectly prompt the Moldovan citizens to break the country's laws. The spokesman of the Ministry, quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, said on Tuesday that Bucharest's decision to grant some counties in Romania the right to accept applications for Romanian citizenship was disturbing. The Republic of Moldova does not recognize double citizenship, althouth hundreds of Moldovan citizens applied for Romanian citizenship following the beginning of negotiations in view of Romania's joining the European Union.     [05] French-Romanian Forum Dedicated to "Road Transports Infrastructure"

    The French-Romanian forum regarding "Road transports infrastructure" started on Tuesday morning, with messages addressed by the Senate chairman Mircea Ionescu Quintus, the foreign affairs minister Petre Roman, and the head of the European Commission in Romania Fokion Fotiadis. The opening speeches were delivered by Romanian transports minister Traian Basescu and French ambassador in Bucharest Pierre Menat. Traian Basescu said, quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, that the strategic objective of modernizing and repairing the Romanian transports infrastructure was its integration into the European system, and that the road infrastructure would be completely repaired by 2004, and the rail infrastructure by 2010.     [06] Meeting of the Commission in Charge with Drawing up the Mid-Term Economic Strategy

    The debates within the commission in charge with drawign up the mid-term economic strategy continued on Tuesday ar Snagov, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. The participants in the debates - representatives of the political parties, of the trade unions and of the employers - considered the economic priorities should be clearly defined. The Commission members agreed that one of the objectives for the 2000-2004 period was a sustained economic growth, able to foster an increased living standard, the development of the middle class, a reduction in differences among different regions, and the reduction of poverty.     [07] Meeting of the Civil Alliance, representatives of PNTCD, PNL, UFD, FER and PER

    On Tuesday, the representatives of the Civil Alliance, PNTCD, PNL, UFD, FER and PER met to establish a common strategy of the center-right parties in this year's elections. PNTCD suggested the drawing up of the code of behavour for the local elections that, according to Remus Opris, should be in consonance with all CDR functioning protocoles, and should lay the basis of the political cooperation with other parties which are not members of the Democratic Convention, such as UFD and UDMR. UFD representative Laurentiu Ulici specified the parties signing that code would present alternative offers for the elections and would support the better placed candidate in the second round. PNL vice-president Puiu Hasotti said his party would run in the general elections on the CDR lists of candidates, and would support Emil Constantinescu in the presidential elections, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports.     [08] Drugs Confiscated by the Romanian Customs Officers

    The Romanian customs officers discovered and confiscated about 13 kilograms of cocaine in the personal luggage of the Romanian-Canadian citizen Paul Marcel Vasile. The customs officers suspicions were risen by the route taken by the suspect, namely Caracas (Venezuela) - Madrid (Spain) - Bucharest, route well known in drug smuggling. A gram of pure cocaine is sold on the black market for 50-80 dollars, which means that the total value of the drugs confiscated amounts to 650,000 dollars. RADOR
