  • [01] Visit to the United Kingdom of the President of Romania Emil Constantinescu

    The President of Romania was received by Queen Elisabeth II-nd on Tuesday. The Queen awarded President Constantinescu the Order Saint Michael and Saint George which is the highest order given to guests on official visits to the UK. President Constantinescu said after the reception that the Queen and he discussed about cultural British-Romanian projects. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI the head of the Romanian state also met with Prime Minister Tony Blair; after the talk President Constantinescu said that the relations of Romania with the United Kingdom have become the pillar of Romania's integration in the European Union. In the morning the Romanian guest also met with the leader of the Conservative Party and with the Lord Mayor of the City of London.

    COOPERATION WITH THE UNITED KINGDOM HAS BECOME A PILLAR OF ROMANIA'S INTEGRATION IN THE EUROPEAN UNION said the President of Romania Emil Constantinescu after his meeting on Tuesday afternoon with the Prime Minister of the British Cabinet Tony Blair. Among other things the interlocutors discussed about the guarantee by the British Cabinet of a credit for the project of drinking water to the villages of Romania. The Romanian President declared after the meetings yesterday that Bucharest will be visited in March by the Lord Mayor of London the visit being focused on the development of Romania's capital city as a center of finances while the Lord chancellor will visit our country in the month of April. The president of Romania said he was very impressed by the fact that Queen Elisabeth II-nd knew so much about Romanian realities - said the special correspondent of RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI to London.

    [02] The restructure of the working personnel of the Cabinet of Romania

    The Executive Bureau of the Cabinet of Romania met yesterday to analyze the ways and means of restructuring and reorganizing the departments and agencies of the Government. In essence we talk of a cut by half of personnel either by the dissolution or by the joining of these structures. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI quotes government sources according to whom the present departments of information, of the spokesperson and of relations with Romanians living abroad will be merged in one single department.

    [03] Restructure of the Home Ministry

    Constantin Dudu Ionescu who is the Home Minister of Romania said that his Ministry will be restructured in the sense of eliminating intermediary stages and slimming down central structures. The Home Minister of Romania told the correspondent of RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI that stress will be laid on the actions of prevention and discouraging criminals.

    [04] Press statement of the Minister of Transportation Traian Basescu

    Minister of Transports Traian Basescu arrived from Brussels last night where he attended the meeting of the delegations of the Governments of Romania and Bulgaria which unfolded in the presence of the special coordinator of the pact of stability Bodo Hombach and of the European commissioner Gunther Verheugen. Mr. Basescu spoke to the media at the Otopeni airport and gave details about the improvement and expansion of the ferryboat links between Romania and Bulgaria as well as about the building of the second bridge across the river Danube. The building of the bridge will be financed by the Bulgarian side and it is worth one billion USD says RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI adding that the location will be established by a committee of experts of the two countries.

    [05] Appeal to Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu to solve the conflict between the striking teachers and the Ministry of Education

    Signatories of the appeal are asking for the assumption of responsibility by the Prime Minister for the conflict to be solved and for the alocation of four per cent of the Gross Industrial Product to education. The appeal is signed by 84 MPies belonging to the opposition parties and an MP belonging to the ruling PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    [06] Estimations of the representative of the International Monetary Fund to Romania

    Stephane Cose who is the new representative of the International Monetary Fund to Romania said as part of an interview to RADIO FRANCE INTERNATIONALE that the Romanian side should proceed to a number of clarifications in as far as the civil servants are concerned. SALARIES OF ARMY OFFICERS AND OF THE POLICE HAVE BEEN RAISED DRAMATICALLY IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS said Mr. Cose adding that the ECONOMY OF ROMANIA IS WELL and that ROMANIA PAID PART OF ITS FOREIGN DEBT IN DUE COURSE AND IN TIME. What is less encouraging, according to the IMF representative, is THE NEGATIVE ECONOMIC INCREASE AND INFLATION WHICH IS 55 per cent. Mr. Cose added that he appreciated a number of measures adopted by the Isarescu Cabinet with a view to simplifying the taxation and collecting systems in this country. RADOR

    [07] Romanian Public Television stands for the setting up of a channel devoted to Parliamentary activity

    The Director of the Romanian Public Television Cristian Hadji Culea said he suggested to the Standing Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies, by a letter he sent them, the creation of a channel to be exclusively devoted to Parliamentary activity. The Director of Romanian Public Television adds in the letter that costs are not big as national television offers all logistic support, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.
