  • [01] Decisions Adopted during the Government Meeting

    During the meeting on Thursday, the Government decided to create an Interdepartmental Commission for Romania's joining NATO. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the commission's maim tasks will be to coordinate and support the actions taken at home and abroad in view of Romania's joining NATO, to periodically evaluate the country's prospects, and to put forward suggestions for the next steps. The commission will have as members representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Transports, Finance, Healthcare, of the Romanian Information Service and the External Information Service, and will be headed by a secretary of state. It will meet every month or as frequently as necessary. Another Government decision enables the Finance Ministry to guarantee on behalf of the Romanian State commercial credits worth 25 million dollars granted by the US Government. The Cabinet also adopted a package of draft laws regarding the ratification of several agreements and conventions. During the same meeting, at the prime minister's request, the industry and trade minister Radu Berceanu informed the Cabinet members about how CONEL assured the energy stock for the winter. The prime minister also asked the finance minister Decebal Traian Remes to present the exact situation of the financial resources from abroad which are not used. Other two Government decisions concerned the removal of the prefect of Constanta county, Marian Parjol, and the prefect of Salaj county, Gheorghe Tamba. RADOR

    [02] Prime Minister's New Staff

    The prime minister's counsellor Adrian Vasilescu announced during a press conference that prime minister Mugur Isarescu decided to reduce his staff from 37 to 22 people, and the number of counsellors from 10 to 6 people. He also announced the names of the counsellors already appointed, namely Nicolae Staiculescu, Mihai David, Minodora Ilie and Victor Chiujdea. The new counsellors will be Lucian Croitoru for budget and finance, Dinu Ianculescu for legal issues, Valentin Lazea for economic issues, Cristian Paunescu for science and culture, and Adrian Vasilescu for communication. The Government spokesman will be the state secretary Ionut Popescu - RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. RADOR

    [03] Measures Taken Against Mayor Marian Lutu

    The Coordination Bureau of the PNTCD Organization in sector 4 met on Thursday evening and decided, by eight in favour, two against and one abstention, to suggest the central leadership to censure mayor Marian Lutu. The party leaders are waiting for the results of the legal inquiry and, according to those results, will decide other measures against Lutu, including his exclusion, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports.     [04] PNTCD Organization in Sibiu Reacts

    The joint meeting of the county and city PNTCD organizations in Sibiu decided to cease supporting MP Lia Galic and to punish other seven party members who deviated from the party principles and created a so-called reformist group within the organization. The communique released by the Sibiu Organization and quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI mentions that the decision taken proves the party members are decided to restore the christian-democratic ethical principles and to remove the opportunists from the party.     [05] Top Police Officers from Sibiu Dismissed

    General Nicolae Neagu, first deputy of the chief police inspector, went to Sibiu to carry out the order signed by interior minister Constantin Dudu Ionescu, regarding the dismissal of the chief police inspector in Sibiu and hos two deputies, colonels Eugen Rotarescu and Nicolae Deac. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, colonel Nicolae Ghergu was appointed ad-interim chief inspector of the Sibiu county police. RADOR

    [06] Possible Meeting between prime minister Mugur Isarescu and the IMF Chief Negotiator

    Prime minister Mugur Isarescu might meet next week the IMF chief negotiator for Romania, Emanuel Zervoudakis, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. Anyway, Mugur Isarescu met on Thursday the ministers in charge with the negotiations with the IMF, in order to establish the details of the Romanian position in these negotiations. RADOR

    [07] The Inflation Estimated for the End of 2000 Will Exceed 10%

    Prime minister's counsellor Adrian Vasilescu said the inflation estimated for the end of 2000 will exceed 10%. He also said, quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, that the National Bank did not and will not issue money uncovered, all the money issues being covered by the currency in the state reserve. RADOR

    [08] Financial Support for the Poor Families in Valea Jiului

    The Government decided to allocate 677.3 million lei to urgently help 221 families in Valea Jiului, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. These families are to receive between 800,000 and 5 million lei, according to the results of the social analysis carried out last year. The 221 families are among the poorest in the area, and their members are mostly unemployed miners. According to the Labour Agency of Hunedoara county, the number of unemployed in Valea Jiului reached 16,981 people, of which 8,869 people receive no allowances. RADOR

    [09] Statements Made by the BNS Leader Dumitru Costin

    Dumitru Costin, leader of the National Trade Unions Block, expressed his dissatisfaction with the tax policy adopted by the Government, adding that the budgetary policy needed transparence regarding both the collection and the allocation of the financial resources. In Costin's opinion, quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the measures adopted by the Cabinet could not assure a proper social protection. According to the BNS prognosis, Costin said, the present elections year would determine an issue of uncovered money, which would cause a monetary reform, probably at the middle of the year. RADOR

    [10] Protocole Signed by the Managers and Trade Unions in RATB

    The representatives of the managers and trade unions in RATB (Bucharest Public Transport Administration) signed a protocole sanctioned by general mayor Viorel Lis, which answers all the trade unions demands, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. The protocole provides a salary increase by 12% starting with January 1, restaurant tickets worth 10,000 lei/day, and closed cabins for all trams and buses. The salary increase would be in the detriment of 1,000 employees, who would be fired. A social pact was also signed, providing that no further demands would be forwarded till July. RADOR

    [11] Romanian-Israeli Cooperation in Defense and Education

    The ministers part of the official delegation who accompanied president Emil Constantinescu in his visit to Israel met with their counterparts, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports.

    Defense minister Victor Babiuc met the Isreali deputy defense minister Efraim Sneh. The two agreed on drawing the final wording of the military cooperation framework-agreement, on exchanges of experience and specialistis in anti-aircraft defense, defense against chemical and nuclear weapons, and on joint military research. Another field of cooperation concerns the social protection of the military. The Israeli part suggested the creation in Romania of a helicopter repair and modernization centre and of an armoured vehicles modernization centre.

    In his turn, education minister Andrei Marga met the Israeli education, culture and sports minister Yosi Sarid. The two analysed the cooperation between the two countries concerning education, and decided to conclude an agreement regarding the validation of the school graduation diplomas, to start a tourism program for Romanian students in Israel, to set up a joint commission to word the text books of interest for both parts, to support the Institute of Judaic Studies "Moshe Carmili" in Cluj and the centres of Judaic studies in Bucharest and Craiova.
