  • [01] Cabinet session

The Cabinet session has discussed a draft bill for increasing ensurance fees for next year which all automobile owners should pay in order to be covered in cases of road accidents. The fees are somewhat higher as compared to last year with the lowest equal to 500,000 lei and the highest equal to 1 150 000 lei. As part of the same session the Cabinet approved tax exemption for equipment destined to the Coltea Hospital and to the rebuilding of the Coltea Church. Also approved during the same Cabinet session was financial emergency aid to a number of very poor families as resulted from social inquests.

[02] Contenders for the Presidential office of Romania in the second ballot

The first two runners up of twelve to the office of President of Romania Ion Iliescu and Corneliu Vadim Tudor are the finalists of the presidential elections of Romania. Ion Iliescu got 37 per cent of the ballots cast and Corneliu Vadim Tudor received 28 per cent of the ballots cast. CNN mentions that Iliescu is a former communist and Vadim Tudor is considered to be the leader of the extreme right wing of this country. His party is GREATER ROMANIA PARTY which CNN considers to be part of the extreme right. The second ballot of the presidential elections takes place on 10 January.

[03] PDSR leading forum had special session

The leaders of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - had talks on Tuesday about the possibilities which the near future may offer and came to the conclusion that any cooperation with Corneliu Vadim Tudor and his party is out of the question. In no way would PDSR work together with Greater Romania Party or with its leader in the next legislature and in case Corneliu Vadim Tudor wins the presidency of Romania, PDSR does not participate in the ruling activity of this country allowing Greater Romania Party have all initiatives in this direction. In case Ion Iliescu wins the presidency PDSR is ready to make up the Cabinet of this country having Adrian Nastase as Prime Minister. This minority cabinet - as PDSR does not have absolute majority in the Senate or in the Chamber of Deputies - needs however Parliamentary support and PDSR already wrote down a Memorandum which it addressed to the National Liberal Party, the Democratic Party and the Democratic Union of Magyars of Romania whose members alongside first and second classified parties, PDSR and Greater Romania Party, make up the new Parliament of this country. The memorandum asks PNL, PD and UDMR to support parliamentary initiatives of PDSR in the economic, social and political domains, both domestic and foreign for a year.

[04] Summarized versions of the answers of the Memorandum recipients

Radu Berceanu who is vice-president of the Democratic Party told RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI that until then (when he talked live to our reporter) the Democratic Party did not receive any complete proposal with the stand of PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - so that a clear decision is to be made by PD when they get the complete material.

Anyway the elections were won by PDSR which must assume the obligation to rule while PD will support the afore mentioned party as long as it pursues reform and adherence to the European Union as well as ideas and democratic principles.

The first vice-president of the National Liberal Party, Valeriu Stoica, says it is the duty of his party to remain in the opposition as this is the only way this party stays sepparate from PDSR and PRM. PDSR does not cooperate with PRM and this means PRM will be in the opposition. It is here that we cannot allow opposition be represented by the extremist Greater Romania Party alone, as the center right wing parties must also be represented and PNL is exactly this.

According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the president of UDMR - Democratic Union of Magyars of Romania, Marko Bela, said that it was quite normal for PDSR to assume responsibility in forming the new cabinet and the support of UDMR would depend on the content of the memorandum and the link between and among the priorities of PDSR and UDMR in continuing reform and in as far as the issues and problems of the Magyuar ethnic minority are concerned. Further talks are expected on the document as such if issues and problems are approached in a way UDMR agrees as proper and correct.

According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the president of Greater Romania Party, Corneliu Vadim Tudor, said the decision of PDSR was not realistic as the will of the Romanian people is that of national concord and unity of all political forces to take the country out of the present crisis. Mr. Tudor also said he did not understand the attitude of some political leaders against PRM and himself.

[05] Relations between Hungary and Romania

Hungary will establish relations with Bucharest in direct accordance with the concrete steps which the new Cabinet takes, has said Zsolt Nemeth, Hungarian Foreign Ministry secretary of state quoted by RADIO KOSSUTH BUDAPEST. He added in the Parliament of his country that he was confident in the fact that in the spirit of good neighborliness and the fundamental principles of the state of laws as well as European Atlantic integration, there will be no fundamental changes in the polical line of Romania. Mr. Zsolt also said he was rather concerned of the fact that in Romania an extremist, anti-semitic and anti-Magyar force was strengthened in the wake of the general elections of last Sunday.

[06] Special book release in Bucharest

Under the aegis of the Civic Academy Foundation, Bucharest was the venue for the launching of the ETHRIDGE MISSION TO ROMANIA by the German historian Ulrich Burger. The book presents documents referring to the political situation of Romania and developments in that part of Europe in 1945 and the way in which they were perceived by an American observer. Mark Ethridge had the mission to make sure, in the winter of 1945, that Romania was finally taken over by the Soviets.

The book launching was also attented by representatives of the civil society and members of the German Embassy to Romania.
