[01] The President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, visits Italy
Together with presidential counselor Zoe Petre and secretary of state with
Foreign Ministry Eugen Dijmarescu, the President of Romania met with the
President of Italy, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and then, at the Romanian Embassy
of Rome, with representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, with personalities
of the political, economic and cultural life of Italy as well as with
members of the Romanian diaspora in Italy.
[02] Secretary of state with the Romanian Foreign Ministry, Mihai Ungureanu,
met with the members of the Greek parliamentary delegation
Mr. Ungureanu met with the Greek parliamentary delegation led by the vice-
chairman of the Greek parliament Panayotis Sgouridis. The dialog was
focused on the support which Greece can grant Romania for our joining the
European and Euroatlantic structures. The guests said that alteration of
the Schengen visas procedure would be possible, in their opinion, for the
Romanian citizens that have no intention to immigrate to the countries that
signed the understanding: in other words Romanians could travel to the
Schengen countries visa free provided there are guarantees that they do not
intend to remain and live in those countries. The two sides have underlined
the importance of boosting bilateral relations, expectations being that
bilateral trade exchanges could exceed one thousand million dollars. With
regard to the situation in Yugoslavia the hosts and the guests alike voiced
their hope that country regain its place alongside the other democratic
states of Europe
[03] PDSR leader Ion Iliescu officially launched his candidacy for the
office of president of Romania
Sala Palatului of Bucharest hosted the ceremony of the official launching
of the candidacy of President of the Social Democracy Party of Romania, Ion
Iliescu, to the office of President of Romania. Mr. Iliescu took the floor
and said that he would do his duty with responsibility to all the citizens
of Romania if he were elected to the office of President adding that he
would take all measures for relaunching economy, combatting poverty and
unemployment, for the strengthening of the authority of the state, for
combatting corruption and for Romania's joining the European Union and
NATO. The first vice-president of the Social Democracy Party of Romania,
Adrian Nastase, also took the floor and said that for Romania to really be
an European country Ion Iliescu should be the President as he is a wise and
well balanced person. Also participating in the audience were
representatives of the Democratic Pole which is made up of PDSR, PSDR and
PUR. Attending were members of the diplomatic corps and of the trade
unions.
[04] CALENDAR
President Emil Constantinescu alongside an official delegation accompanying
him is received by Pope John Paul II-nd and then he has a meeting with the
Cardinal Angelo Sodano, secretary of the Holy See.
Press Conference on the occasion of the Forum Leaders organized under the
patronage of the Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, at the World
Trade Center.
Meeting of the minister of justice Valeriu Stoica with Annemarie Huber -
Hotz, federal chancellor of Switzerland.
At Sinaia, under the organization of UNDP of Bucharest and the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, unfolding of the regional seminar on the factors which
influence democratic processes in South Eastern Europe.
Press Conference on the extraordinary American music concert ONE MOMENT IN
TIME which will take place at the Romanian Atheneum on 9 October being
organized by the Foundation PAX ROMANA of the United States and the
Cultural Sound Foundation. The press conference takes place at the Press
Center of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation.
Varnishing of the exhibition A TRAVEL JOURNAL IN WATER COLORS which
features works by the painter Alexander Creswell during the visits made by
Prince Charles in November 1998 in countries of Central Europe - Romania,
Slovenia, Bulgaria and Macedonia. The exhibition is organized by the
British Council at the National Theater of Bucharest.
