    PM of Romania meets with the leadership of PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party Mr. Mugur Isarescu has met at the Parliament Palace with members of the leadership of PNTCD: Ion Diaconescu, the President of the Party, first vicepresident Ioan Muresan and vicepresident Constantin Dudu Ionescu. The main themes tackled were the programme of the Cabinet and the results of the first six months of the year as well as the elections in the fall. After the talk Ion Diaconescu said that PNTCD further militated for the maintenance of the present team that ensures the success of the programme, namely President Emil Constantinescu and Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu. Mr. Diaconescu also said that the fact that Mugur Isarescu is not a member of any political party is a guarantee that the programme of his Cabinet is not influenced by any political commandment. Prime Minister Isarescu said after the meeting with the PNTCD leaders that there are two fundamental problems for the programme of the Cabinet and namely the drought this year and the continual decrease of the EURO as against the USD. In these conditions the national currency continues to decrease in order to maintain international competition. In as far as foreign aid and loans are concerned Prime Minister Isarescu said that in June we received 350 million USD while at the end of July we would be able add to our coffers, as it were, 200 million more to which added are foreign investments, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports.

    The Central Permanent Bureau of PNL is favorable to an alliance with ApR The President of ApR, Mircea Ionescu Quintus, said that the Permanent Central Bureau of his Party stood for merging with ApR - Alliance for Romania Party - while the liberals are supporting Theodor Stolojan for the position of President of Romania with a view to the elections in the fall. Former Prime Minister Stolojan told the media after the meeting: " I do not have any reserve to belong to this political formula - PNL plus ApR - and if I choose to become a party member then it is PNL - National Liberal Party - but only if there is an alliance between PNL and ApR which is followed by a merger between the two political parties."

    PUNR - National Unity Party of Romanians - stands for the creation of a left wing pole President of PUNR Valeriu Tabara is of the opinion that the right wing forces of Romania have exhausted all they had as a political offer so that the only viable solution is the creation of a center-left wing pole to which social liberal elements are also expected to adhere. Mr. Tabara added that his party has already started talks for possible alliances with PDSR,PNR, PNL,PSDR, ApR and aims to have talks with the leaders of ANCD and PD.

    Foreign minister Petre Roman has met with representatives of the Romanian National Authority for Tourism Mr. Roman received the representatives of the Romanian National Authority for Tourism that told him incomes from tourism would be twice as much if the Romanian citizens would not have to get so many visas when they travel abroad, during vacation, or when taking trips for rest and recreation. Mr. Roman told the tourism officials that it is probable this year European Union would renounce visas for Romanian citizens if frontier control on the Romanian side gets stronger or if the process takes a bit longer then next year Europe would see more Romanians travelling for vacation purposes once concrete steps are made for strengthening frontier control on the Romanian side.

    FPS - State Ownership Fund - creates Consortium to privatize Banca Agricola The consortium on the creation of which all those interested have agreed will include Romanian - United States Fund for Investments as well as the Agricultural Bank of Greece alongside a branch of the Dutch Agricultural Bank. Romanian Bank of Development will add itself to the consortium and the entire process of privatizing Banca Agricola will have to be concluded at the end of September, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    Ministry of Transports launches the fourth stage of rehabilitation and modernization of national roads, highways and expressways Anca Boiagiu, minister of transportation of Romania announced that she would start the fourth stage of modernizing and building the network of roads, highways and expressways of this country valued at 500 million EURO. Total length is of 655 kms and spreads from Transylvania to the South border of Romania.

    [03] INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

    President Emil Constantinescu has received the delegation of the Russian Duma at the Cotroceni Palace, Presidency of Romania The delegation to Romania of the Russian Duma was headed by the President of the Duma, Ghennadi Selezniov. The delegation was in Bucharest for the session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Union. After the meeting the President of Romania said at the press conference that the Russian Federation was important for maintaining peace in Europe and for the development of regional collaboration. The President of Romania said that the final wording of the basic political treaty between Romania and Russia is a priority on the bilateral agenda and that the treaty must have the consensus of both parliaments. The President of Romania Emil Constantinescu added that an important role in the development of relations between Romania and Russia is that of relaunching relations of economic collaboration, the mixed forms of business cooperation, improvement of legal framework and commercial facilities.

    According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI at the end of the visit to the Parliament of Romania, the head of the Russian Duma delegation to our country, Ghennadi Selezniov held a press conference at the seat of the Romanian Parliament. He said that he learned of the wish of the Romanian side to develop relations with the Russian Federation both bilaterally and as part of OSCE. He added that intensified economic relations which of late declined drastically would be to the benefit of both sides. Mr. Selezniov said that the final wording of the treaty between Romania and Russia could be done after the parliamentary elections of Romania this fall in the conditions in which the Romanian side does not wish explicitely to have in the treaty the aspects linked to the retrocession of the Romanian treasury or to the Ribbentrop-Molotov Treaty.

    Multinational military exercise in the Black Sea hosted by Romania Dobrogea, the Romanian region bordering on the Black Sea, and the national territorial waters of the Sea are the theater of RESCUE EAGLE 2000 organized by the Romanian Defense Ministry and which is part of cooperation actions with NATO. Participating are forces from Romania, Greece, Germany, France, Italy, Turkey, the United States, the Republic of Moldova, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI transmits.

    [04] CALENDAR

    Romanian minister of national defense Sorin Frunzaverde is paying an official visit to Turkey at the invitation of his opposite number of that country Sabahattin Cakmakoglu.

    The Romanian national defense minister will also be received by the Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and he will have talks with the minister of defense of the host country and with army general Husseyin Kivrikoglu, Head of the General Chiefs of Staff.

    At the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Romania, briefing of state secretary Mihai Razvan Ungureanu and the ambassadors of the donor countries, members of the Pact of Stability.

In the afternoon there is a reception in honor of the young Romanian students that go to the USA on scholarships such as Fulbright, Ron Brown, Hubert Humphrey or supporting the costs of their tuition in the USA; the reception takes place at the residence of the US Ambassador to Romania, here in Bucharest.

    Special session of the General Council of the municipality of Bucharest at the seat of the Town Hall of the city this afternoon.

    One of the NUDES painted by Matisse was sent to Japan for the exhibition MATTISE AND HIS MODELS an exhibition which opens today and which is can be visited until next March. The painting NUDE FOR THE ARTIST'S WORKSHOP is part of the patrimony of the Romanian National Art Museum and the exhibition in Japan has gathered almost all the artists paintings in this domain.

    [05] ANNIVERSARIES AND COMMEMORATIONS

    Caius Iulius Caesar was born on 13 July 100 B.Ch. He was one of the greatest statesmen, politicians and military of the world of his time, a writer and a key-note speaker, to use a modern phrase. He introduced the calendar bearing the name of his family, IULIA, in 45 B.Ch. As it is known Caesar was murdered in the Roman Senate on 15 March 44 B.Ch.
