[01] News from the Electoral Central Bureau regarding participation in
local elections
Voting in Romania as part of local elections was of 44.54 per cent all
over Romania according to data released by Central Electoral Bureau. In
Bucharest participation out of total was of 32 per cent. Complaints were
forwarded by political parties and organizations which had observers but,
however, in general, it is estimated that the local elections of Romania,
the first ballot, unfolded without fraud and without major disorders,

[02] Incomplete results of local elections in Bucharest according to the
Central Electoral Bureau
BEC - Central Electoral Bureau - released incomplete results of voting
until now for 60.49 per cent of the total. Results read: PDSR - Social
Democracy Party - candidate Sorin Oprescu has 40.86 per cent of the votes
and he is followed by Democratic Party candidate Traian Basescu with 17.27
per cent and by the candidate of the Romanian Democratic Convention, Calin
Catalin Chirita with 16.91 per cent of the votes. The other candidates
obtained around seven and less than five per cent, reports RADIO ROMANIA

[03] Protocol of electoral support between the Romanian Democratic
Convention and the National Liberal Party
President of the Romanian Democratic Convention Ion Diaconescu and the
President of the National Liberal Party, Mircea Ionescu - Quintus signed a
document on Monday asking local organizations to support each other in the
second ballot. The two leaders were interviewed live by RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALITATI and said that in fact the present understanding makes topical
again the provisions of the preceeding protocol regarding local elections
which stipulates that the two political organizations are candidating on
separate for the first ballot and support each other in the second ballot,
following the old traditions of collaboration between the two. RADOR
[04] Session of the Romanian Senate
Senator Alexandru Mortun of the National Liberal Party said on Monday that
the State should take over and include in the public debt the sums of
money which have dissapeared from the FNI - the National Investment Fund -
so that the investors get back their money, at least the initial deposits,
reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR
[05] Activity of the Chamber of Deputies
MPies have passed the draft bills for the granting of the statute of
municipality to the towns of Vatra Dornei and Sacele; also passed were
bills for the banning of tobacco promotion and selling of tobacco products
to teen-agers as well as the emergency ordinances for tax exemption of
products and equipment for the Foreign Information Service and the
Ministry of National Defense. RADOR
[06] Council of Administration of the Romanian People's Bank decided to
stop payment on a temporary basis
All payments are stopped on a temporary basis at the Romanian People's
Bank; the Council of Administration has said that this measure is valid
for a period of six months only and was adopted following the fact that an
increasing number of people have withdrawn their money in the last few
weeks. The President of the Bank, Emil Botea, told RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALITATI that last Monday alone withdrawals came to a grand total of 47
thousand million lei and practically the Bank ran out of bills. there is
no reason of concern, Mr. Botea further said, as the Bank collects each
month about 40 thousand million lei out of loan paid back. RADOR
[07] The President of the National Savings Bank - CEC - Liviu Marica - was
dismissed
Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu dismissed former CEC president LIVIU MARICA
and replaced him by the former President of the Romanian Commercial Bank
Ion Ghica. According to Cabinet sources it was the International Monetary
Fund that asked that all members of the Board of the Savings Bank be
selected from among specialists. RADOR
[08] International Reserves of the National Bank of Romania
International reserves of the National Bank of Romania are worth more than
2.5 thousand million lei in hard currency and in gold. Until the end of
the year the National Bank of Romania will continue to buy hard currency
and gold and ensure the service of foreign debt which is of 600 million
USD. RADOR

Official visit to Slovakia of President Emil Constantinescu acompanied by
Mrs. Nadia Constantinescu, today and tomorrow.
The Standing Bureaus of the two chambers of the Romanian Parliament are
gathering together to have their say on the setting up of the inquiry
committee into the activity of the National Commission of Chattels
Personal.
Special Cabinet session at noon.
Romanian foreign minister Petre Roman leaves for Brussels to attend the
second meeting of the Special Group for improving the situation of less
favored children of Romania.
In the interval 6 - 8 June a German delegation led by Dr. Reiner Gordeler
undersecretary of state with the German Federal Ministry entrusted with
Cooperation and Development will have negociations with the Cabinet of
Romania with the aim of the future strategy for technical cooperation.
United States Ambassador James Rosapepe is holding a press conference as
part of which he announces the opening of the American Investment Forum
ROMANIA 2000 organized by the Embassy of the United States in collaboration
with Romanian Capital and Trade Development Group at Hotel Crowne Plaza.
