  • [01] Agreements Signed by President Emil Constantinescu

    According to a communique issued by Romania's Presidency and quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, president Emil Constantinescu promulgated two agreements, namely the Romanian-French Agreement regarding military cooperation, and the Agreement signed with the Government of Cyprus regarding the cooperation in the fight against international crime. RADOR

    [02] The Senate Chairman Takes Part in the Forum of Senates

    The Senate chairman Mircea Ionescu Quintus takes part in Paris in the Forum of Senates, gathering chairmen form all over the world. Starting with March 15, Mircea Ionescu Quintus pays an official visit to Germany, at the invitation of Kurt Biedenkoff, Bundestag chairman. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI mentions that the Romanian official will also meet representatives of the Federal Government, of the Foreign Policy Committees, and with parliamentarians member of the Germany-Romania Friendship group.     [03] Germany Offers Romania A Mobile Laboratory to Measure Pollution

    A delegation of the German Environment and Nuclear Security Ministry, headed by state secretary Gila Altmann, met on Monday the Romanian environment protection minister and specialists in the field. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, Germany will offer Romania a mobile laboratory to measure pollution, and the German specialists will help both to overcome the present situation and to prevent similar accidents.     [04] Hungarian-Romanian Seminar on Legal Issues

    On Monday started in Szgeged, Hungary, the 4th Hungarian-Romanian seminar on legal issues. The participants will discuss about "Proceedings in state administration", "Judicial control in state administration", "Protection of minority rights", "Judicial proceedings". The Hungarian justice minister Ibolya David and her Romanian counterpart Valeriu Stoica held speeches in the opening session. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports that Valeriu Stoica is accompanied by the Romanian ambassador in Hungary, Petru Cordos. RADOR

    [05] Communique Regarding the Second Bridge Over the Danube

    According to a communique quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the group of experts from Romania, Bulgaria and the European Commission decided the project and building of the second bridge over the Danube would be achieved according to the agreement reached in October 1999, and would start as soon as possible. The location of the bridge would be decided by experts. RADOR

    [06] The New Defense Minister Was Sworn In

    On Monday, the new defense minister, Sorin Frunzaverde, was sworn in by president Emil Constantinescu. The ceremony was attended by Parliament and Government members, ministers representing the Democratic Party, officials from the National Defense Ministry. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI mentions that, previously, the head of state signed the decision to dismiss Victor Babiuc and the decree appointing Sorin Frunzaverde as defense minister. RADOR

    [07] The General Staff Presented Romania's Military Strategy

    The General Staff presented to the Government Romania's military strategy. The National Defense Ministry is to draw up the directions regarding the strategic planning, and the strategic and operational plans. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, Romania's military strategy is based upon the strategic objectives of national security and the Government's white paper, which define the responsabilities and resources available in view of achieving these objectives.     [08] PNTCD Does Not Envisage the Possiblity of PD Leaving the Governing Coalition

    PNTCD secretary general Remus Opris said his party did not envisage the possibility of PD leaving the governing coalition. Opris added, quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the democrats would not risk losing the Government portfolios and positions in the local administration, and their message as oposition party would not be credible a few months before the elections. RADOR

    [09] UFD Will Conclude No Political Alliances in View of the Elections

    The Union of Democratic Forces will conclude no political alliances in view of the elections, even if that would mean not entering the Parliament. During a press conference on Monday, Varujan Vosganian presented a political statement, according to which "UFD dissociated from the guilty complicity of the Romanian politicians", RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports. The UFD leader also said the future of Romania was guaranteed by civil society, where youth played an important part. RADOR

    [10] Senator Radu F. Alexandru Calls for the Dismissal of the Foreign Affairs Minister

    Senator Radu F. Alexandru, ex-PD member, asked the president and the prime minister to dismiss foreign affairs minister Petre Roman. The reason for the request is, according to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, "the unacceptable manner in which the head of Romanian diplomacy endangered the country's interests", referring to the cancellation of the Dutch defense minister's visit to Romania. RADOR

    [11] The Romanian Press Club Considers Some Provisions in the Law Regarding Secret Are Unconstitutional

    The Romanian Press Club noticed that the final wording of the Law regarding secter, recently adopted by the Chamber of Deputies, comprised some provisions that infringe Article 31 in Romania's Constitution, according to which the right to any information of public interest can not be hindered. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs that the Romanian Press Club asked the members of the Parliamentary commissions for culture, art and media to notify the Constitutional Court on the unconstitutionality of those provisions. RADOR

    [12] No Enquiry on the Activity of CEC During the 1996-1999 Period

    The deputies rejected the request made by the Budget, Finance and Banks Commission to start an enquiry on the activity of CEC during the 1996-1999 period, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. On the other hand, they started the debates on another request made by same Commission, regarding an enquiry on the activity of the Agricultural Bank during the same period. RADOR

    [13] A Delegation of the Japanese Bank for Investments and Cooperation Pays a Visit to Romania

    A delegation of the Japanese Bank for Investments and Cooperation met the general manager of the National Railroads Company, Viorel Simut, to analyse the possiblities to modernize the railroad Bucharest-Constanta. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI mentions the analysis are part of a study in view of granting a 205 million dollars loan, necessary to repair this railroad. RADOR
