Supreme Commander of the NATO forces in Europe makes a visit to Bucharest
State Minister, Foreign Minister Petre Roman, received supreme commander of
the NATO forces in Europe, general Wesley Clark, who is now making an
official visit to Romania, on the occasion of concluding his mandate on our
continent. The two sides stressed the particular importance which our
country attaches to its relations with NATO and they made an analysis of
the ways and means to reach the objectives included in the national
programme aimed at Romania's integration in NATO. On the agenda of the
talks also included were possibilities of developing bilateral cooperation
with NATO. Foreign Minister Roman said he was satisfied with the
encouragement which general Clark addressed Romania with regard to her
efforts to be integrated in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. In his
turn general Clark said he firmly believed that our country was already
engaged with NATO and added he was happy with the support Romania granted
NATO during the war in Yugoslavia. R R A - RADOR
[01] OSCE High Commissioner for national minorities Max Van der Stoel was
awarded the National Order STAR OF ROMANIA
At a ceremony at the Cotroceni Palace, the President of Romania, Emil
Constantinescu, awarded the National Order STAR OF ROMANIA with the rank of
Grand Officier to Max Van der Stoel, OSCE High Commissioner for national
minorities. The high order was granted in token of high appreciation for
the important and consistent support which Max Van der Stoel gives
Romania's efforts to get integrated in European structures. On this
occasion, Max Van der Stoel said the issue of national minorities can be
solved only if there is good faith. Alongside the head of Romanian
diplomacy, Petre Roman, Max Van der Stoel tackled the issue of the BABES
BOLYAI University. The guest presented a set of reccomendations with a view
to support the project destined to stimulate the multicultural destination
of the University of Cluj-Napoca. R R A - RADOR.
[02] Romanian foreign minister presented the main lines of our country's
foreign policy to the specialized Parliament Committees
Foreign minister Petre Roman presented on Wednesday the main lines of
Romania's foreign policy before the members of the specialized foreign
policy committees. The first and the most important is aimed at the
successful unfolding of negociations of accession to the European Union. In
this sense Petre Roman estimated that Romania was prepared to conclude
negociations of six chapters this year, namely: competition policies, small
and medium sized companies, scientific research and technological
development, education and professional training of the young people,
regional policies and foreign economic relations. Another objective is NATO
integration. According to the Foreign Minister of Romania our country
fulfils all conditions on all directions as asked by the Alliance but it is
however necessary to continue action as started by the Foreign Ministry for
the extention of NATO. R R A - RADOR
[03] The stand of PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party - in
connection with the letter sent by the PDSR - Social Democracy Party of
Romania - leader Ion Iliescu to the President of Romania, Emil
Constantinescu
PNTCD is of the opinion that the letter sent by the President of PDSR to
the President of Romania simply hides the intention of the leader of PDSR
to lay the ground so that in future any political action of the President
of Romania, of the democratic forces or even of the PDSR members who might
be in disagreement with their leader be interpreted as attempts of
discrediting PDSR leader Ion Iliescu. PNTCD is also of the opinion that
reality speaks for itself so there is no need of obstructing candidature of
Ion Iliescu. R R A - RADOR
[04] PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - voices its surprise at the
reaction of the Presidency at the plan of stopping the candidature of Ion
Iliescu to the office of President of Romania
PDSR qualifies as superficial the way the Presidency of Romania learned of
and reacted toward the plan of stopping the candidature of Ion Iliescu to
the office of President of Romania without an analysis of its content and
estimates that the affirmations and actions of the President of Romania do
nothing else but confirm a number of data of the document. The main party
in the opposition upholds the idea that nobody inside PDSR deals with
fabrications. It is President Constantinescu - PDSR continues - that has
the task to demonstrate reality or falsehood of the document. R R A -

institutions that deal with national security issues. Former President of
Romania, Ion Iliescu, is, according to law, under the protection of S P P.

Democratic Party
The Permanent Bureau of PNL took notice of the communique of the Political
Council of the Democratic Party which officially expresses regrets that the
opinions of a number of PD officials touched upon the public image of PNL.
The leadership of the National Liberal Party decided to accept these
apologies taking into consideration the importance of public stability and
the fact that work of the government coalition is of national interest. PNL
decided that after consultations with partners of the Romanian Democratic
Coalition talks should be resumed on all important problems of the country.
[07] Protest meeting of the unionists of the defense industry
