[02] The Presidency of ROMANIA and PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania
- continue their war of words
The war of words between the Presidency of Romania and the main opposition
party of this country continues. It was triggered by the affirmation of
President Emil Constantinescu on Friday comprising accusations at the
address of former Securitate and former members of communist nomenklatura.
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI quotes that Sunday saw another sequence of the
exchange of retorts between the afore mentioned parties. PDSR released a
new communique following the speech of the Presidency spokesman Rasvan
Popescu who, in his turn, had answered a first communique of the Social
Democracy Party of Romania. The PDSR document reads that we witness the
transformation of a useless psichoanalysis exercise into a furious attack
against all those that do not share the same beliefs as those of the
President of Romania. PDSR repeats the request to the President of Romania
to apologize to those that were seriously insulted by the words uttered on
Friday drawing attention at the same time on the dramatic consequences of
the affirmations of the President of Romania. PDSR also specifies that the
President is mistaken when wishing to solve the problems of the ruling
coalition by rerouting attention to non existing targets. On Friday
President Emil Constantinescu said that his efforts were made useless by
the former class of party workers and old Securitate officers that gathered,
after the fall of Ceausescu,in the Social Democracy Party of Romania -PDSR-
and in the Greater Romania Party-PRM. The two parties have asked the
president of Romania to apologize, a request which is quoted as being
unjustified by the spokesman of the Presidency of Romania. RADOR

position of Defense Minister

Party, PD, publicly announced the nomination of Sorin Frunzaverde to the

support this action so that the present impasse is overcome and the
coalition concentrate efforts in the direction of parliamentary and
government activity, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports. In connection with
the nomination of Sorin Frunzaverde to the office of Defense Minister by
the Democratic Party, the President of the Christian Democratic National
Peasants Party, Ion Diaconescu said that in this sense it is important to
have the opinion of the President of the country who is the President of
the Supreme Council for the Defense of the country naturally the stand of
the Prime Minister of Romania being important. Calin Popescu Tariceanu who
is a member of the Permanent Bureau of the National Liberal Party said
there is no official stand of his party on this issue and a nomination of
the Democratic Party - PD - now when we have a Defense Minister, to the
same office, is not a matter of great urgency or necessity. Mr. Tariceanu
added: " It would be natural to solve the basic issues and then proceed to
a nomination ". RADOR
