  • [01] Visit of President Emil Constantinescu to the United Kingdom

    RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs that President Emil Constantinescu was the guest of the Royal Institute for International Relations and spoke about the conception of Romania on the expansion of the European Union and of NATO and about the determination of our country to avoid obstacles that until now hindered the rapid unfolding of the reform process in Romania. Previously the President had met Geoffrey Hoon, secretary of defense, FCO secretary Robin Cook and the minister for international development Mrs. Claire Short. The British department for international development will give Romania in the next three years eighteen million Sterling pounds for projects with a view to improving public administration regional development and social protection. British foreign secretary Robin Cook said at the meeting with President Emil Constantinescu that the United Kingdom was ready to grant Romania assistance in the economic domain following the successful military worktogether and reaffirmed the support of Great Britain for Romania's accession to the European Union. At the same time the British FCO secretary said he would try to increase the interest of British investors in Romania. RADOR

    [02] The Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church Teoctist celebrated his 85-th birthday anniversary

    The Patriarchal Palace of Bucharest hosted the ceremony of the celebration of 85 years of the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church Teoctist. In the speech delivered on this occasion the President - Director General of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation, Andrei Dimitriu, recalled the main achievements of our Father Patriarch along his entire life. At the same time Mr. Andrei Dimitriu specified that there are ten years since the first broadcast of the mass covered live by RADIO ROMANIA. The Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation awarded Patriarch Teoctist on his birthday anniversary the Hommage paying plaquette and the Medal of gilded silver as a token of homage, of deep appreciation and profound love. At the same time the presidency of Romania transmitted its homage paying message. Present at the ceremony was also Vladimir, Metropolitan of Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, who is under the Patriarchy of Moscow, Russia. Vladimir's presence at the ceremony is seen as a most important event for the relations between the Churches of Romania and of Russia, says RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. RADOR

    [03] Restructure and reorganization of the Cabinet of Romania

    The Executive Bureau of the Cabinet analyzes the restructure of the Cabinet by the reshaping of the Departments, according to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. The department of communications will soon be set up by the merging of the present departments of public information, of the spokesperson and that of relations with Romanians living abroad. The personnel will be cut by half. At the same time the number of people working for Government agencies will also be reduced by half. RADOR

    The legal matters committees of both chambers of Parliament passed all candidates to the National College for the study of the archives of former Securitate including the candidate of PNTCD, Patapievici, who had been rejected at first by both Committees, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.     [05] Delegation of the International Monetary Fund visits county Calarasi

    County Calarasi is visited by a delegation of the International Monetary Fund which finances the pilot project of agricultural practices which are not detrimental to the environment to be implemented in that county on a surface of 60,000 hectares. The project costs five million USD a sum which is given by the International Monetary Fund as a nonrefundable loan. RADOR

    [06] General strike of teachers of pre-university education of Romania

    Teachers of pre-university education all over Romania continue their general strike which was actually resumed after a one week long vacation of the school students. All documents were forwarded with the Town Hall and the Police Department of the City of Bucharest with a view to the march of protest which the Education Trade Unions will organize on Thursday, 10 February, starting 11:00 at Piata Revolutiei and Piata Victoriei, reports RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.
