[02] Prime Minister Isarescu presented the strategy for Romania's
development on a medium term
As part of an address which was broadcast by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI last
night Prime Minister Isarescu said the programme for Romania's medium term
development is a premise for Romania's accession to the European Union.
Among other things the Prime Minister said the following: "Among the
exigencies which we learn is also that inflation could not bring about any
economic increase. Medium term strategy asks for a consistent effort to
rapidly cut down inflation from 27 per cent gradually so that starting with
the year 2003 we could compute inflation rates in one digit figures. We will
have to give up activity of some of our industrial sectors while we upgrade
and develop activity in some others. Most decisive will be both the market
as well as the decisions of the government depending of exigencies of
European integration and resources which we have". The Prime Minister was
quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI with the following:" We will no longer
accept a budget deficit bigger than three per cent of the Gross Industrial
Product which is also the highest ceiling which the European Union accepts.
The present strategy is also a solid basis for a continuous line of ruling
action which should not suffer alterations due to electoral dynamics or
possible future reshuffles and changes of cabinet". RADOR
