[01] The 141st Anniversary of the Union of the Romanian Principalities
A ceremony was organized in Bucharest to mark the Union of the Romanian
Principalities. The event was attended by interior minister Constantin Dudu
Ionescu, commanders of the main armies in the Interior Ministry, the chief
Police inspector general Nicolae Berechet, the commander of Romanian
Gendarmerie general Anghel Andreescu, and the commander of military firemen
general Ionel Craciun. The participants reminded that Prince Alexandru Ioan
Cuza was the one who created the first police units, RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALITATI informs.
In Iasi, local authorities and members of Parliament placed flower wraths
in front of the statue of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza. At noon, a religious
service was celebrated in the church "Trei Ierarhi", to homour the Prince
who united the two Principalities and all those who fought for national

[02] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu Met PNL Leaders
Prime minister Mugur Isarescu met PNL leaders to discuss the mid-term
economic development strategy. PNL president Mircea Ionescu Quintus asked
the prime minister to assume the Government's responsability for about 10
very important laws meant to amend the Penal and Civil Codes, and other
legal reglementations. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the liberal
leaders reiterated their support for the Governmental program and for the
measures the Cabinet would take in order to implement this program. RADOR
[03] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu Met PRM Leaders
A PRM delegation headed by the party president Corneliu Vadim Tudor
discussed with prime minister Mugur Isarescu the mid-term economic
strategy. At the end of the meeting, Corneliu Vadim Tudor, quoted by RADIO
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, said he suggested the strategy should include
protection measures for the poor. RADOR
[04] Statements Made During the UFD Press Conference
During a press conference on Monday, UFD co-president Adrian Iorgulescu
said Romania could only benefit from the West's opening towards the East if
the ideas put forward by the right wing parties were taken into
consideration. Iorgulescu considered the time of Romania's recovery had
come, and said the Union of Democratic Forces assumed the historic mission
of being the party of national reunion, since it promoted the idea of a
second modernization of the country, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports.

[05] Radu Sarbu Was Elected as President of the PNTCD Cluj Organization
According to RADIO CLUJ, Radu Sarbu is the new president of the PNTCD Cluj
Organization, elected with 34 votes in favour and one against. Secretary
general of the organization is Radu Tatar, and vice-president is Serban
Radulescu. The Bureau of the organization includes seven members, namely
the presidents of the organizations in the main towns of the county. Radu
Sarbu said the priority of the organization was to win the local elections.

[06] Meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission for Integration into NATO
The Interdepartmental Commission for Romania's integration into NATO met
for the first time this year on Monday. The participants analysed the stage
reached in the implementation of the annual National Program regarding the
preparations for Romania's joining NATO, document presented last September
in Brussels. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI mentions that the main attributions
of this commission are to coordinate the internal and external activities
in view of the country's integration into the North-Atlantic Alliance, to
evaluate those actions, and to draw up reports and forward proposals
regarding the speeding up of the integration process. RADOR
[07] Andrew Vorkink, Director for Romania in the World Bank, on a Visit to
Bucharest
Andrew Vorkink, director for Romania in the World Bank, arrived on Monday
in Bucharest, to assess the Romanian projects financed by the World Bank.
According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the last package of the agreement
signed with the Romanian Government, representing 150 million dollars and
meant for the fundamental restructuring of agriculture would be soon
released. Another important project, PSAL, regarding the restructuring of
the private sector, would be financed by the second package of 150 million
dollars. The project is to end in March this year, and the only condition
still unmet is the privatization of companies through investment banks.

[08] Andrew Vorkink Met Transports Minister Traian Basescu
Andrew Vorkink and Traian Basescu analysed on Monday the implementation of
the PSAL program and the conditions necessary to start the program PSAL 2.
In Andrew Vorkink's opinion, progress was made mainly concerning
privatization, and the bank and financial reform. Traian Basescu said,
quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, that the future program PSAL 2 would
focus on the analysis and improvement of the business environment, as well
as on the reform of the administration structures, in view of reducing
corruption. RADOR
[09] Foreign Investments in Romania in 1999
The foreign investments in Romania reached last year over 250 million
dollars, by 28 million higher than in 1998, the TV station ROMANIA 1
informs. The direct foreign investments were lower than in 1994, when the
capital in currency was of almost 900 million dollars. The Netherlands and
Germany are the countries that invested the most in Romania in the last
nine years. RADOR
[10] General Strike in Railroads
"Solidaritatea" federation of trade unions in railroads announced on Monday
the decision to go on general strike on Tuesday morning at 7:00, despite
the decision of other trade unions in the branch to postpone their protest,
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. The trade union leaders said the list of
trains which would circulate was similar to that during the strike in
December. RADOR
[11] The Teachers Are on Strike
On Monday, the teachers went on strike all over the country. In a statement
for RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, education minister Andrei Marga appealed to
the teachers to resume their activity, as most of their demands had been
satisfied. In reply, the leader of Federation of Free Trade Unions in
Education said the three federations that went on strike consider their
main demand was not satisfied, and therefore would continue their protest.

[12] Seminar on "Youth and Communication"
The seminar "Youth and Communication", organized by the Association
"Manfred Woerner" began on Monday in Bucharest. According to RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALITATI, the main issues to be approached are to make the youth aware
of the part played by communication in preventing and settling conflicts,
and the modern methods and techniques of communication. RADOR
