Political life The plenum of the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday passed the modification of the present legal provisions regarding excises and other indirect taxes as well as the Romanian import customs tariff. Also on Tuesday passed was the government urgent rezolution on the ways and means to implement provisions refering to the calculation of the taxable profit according to the Budget Law for l999, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. The Senate started debates also on Tuesday on the request of the BUDGET-FINANCE Committee focused on the beginning of an inquest in the activity of BANCOREX. After some heated debates the Plenum decided to meet the leaders of the parliamentary groups on Wednesday to reach a decision. The National Romanian Party asks the government to make public the contents of the Accord with the IMF as the Parliament itself does not know all details, said vice-president Viorel Catarama in a press conference.At the same time the NRP demands that the membership of the team of negociators representing Romania be validated by the Parliament, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. The Alliance for Romania considers that forests of a surface of at least lo hectares should be given back to their former owners while the State must set up all necessary judicial,technical and financial instruments so that these assets be preserved and protected, according to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI AND RADOR NEWS AGENCY. The former King of Romania, Mihai, together with his wife are currently on a visit to county Tulcea.

  • [01] International relations Foreign minister Andrei Plesu met on Tuesday with general Henry Kievenaar, Pentagon Europe and NATO first Director.General Constantin Degeratu, head of the Romanian army GHQ who was present at the talks said that the parties tackled issues pertaining to the speeding up of the reform process, the restructuring and modernization of the army of Romania. General Degeratu also said that as part of the collaboration within the strategic Romania- United States Partnership and the British assistence programme joint conclusions were reached to allow the reform process to be sped up and developed in the following two to three months in accordance with Romania's desideratum to join NATO. A delegation of the France-Romania interparliamentary group of the French Senate was received at the seat of the Romanian Senate on Tuesday. Senator Ion Iliescu who is the president of the interparliamentary group of the Romanian Senate who was quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI said France was supporting the efforts of Romania to join the Euro-Atlantic structures. The foreign minister of France, Hubert Vedrine is expected in Bucharest today on an official visit.Romania's ambassador to France, Dumitru Ceausu told RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI the following;''We need to talk on this occasion and in this framework what should happen at the summitt focused on the expansion of the Atlantic Alliance towards the East. Romania's prime minister, Radu Vasile receives this evening La Legion d'Honeur with the rank of Grand Officier from the president of France.The decoration is presented at the Bucharest seat of the French Embassy by the French foreign minister who starts a visit to Romania today. The Romanian minister of culture Ion Caramitru is currently on a visit to the United Kingdom as a participant in the forum;''Government Prospects on Culture and Well-being'. Mr.Mihai Ungureanu, state secretary in the Foreign Ministry of Romania gave an interview to the BBC as part of which he said among other things that the planned political union among Russia,Belarus and Yugoslavia is a positive sign for the necessity of Romania's joining NATO stressing the exceptional role of Romania in our geographical region.
