[01] Police in the Hunedoara district received mandate to execute court
decision on Miron Cozma arrest
The Chairman of Bucharest Appeal Court Radu Giroveanu said that police in
the Hunedoara district received mandate to execute court decision on Miron
Cozma' arrest on Tuesday. Miron Cozma was condemned to 18 years of prison
in trial over the miner's march in 1991. RADOR, February 17
[02] Miron Cozma's lawyer to ask for condemnation to be delayed
Miron Cozma's lawyer Viorel Dumitrescu said he would ask for execution of
his client's condemnation to be delayed. He said he was asking that because,
according to the protocol signed in Cozia in January Mr Cozma had several
obligations to fulfill. RADOR, February 17
[03] Leader of GRP disavows Cozma's condemnation
The leader of the Greater Romania Party Corneliu Vadim Tudor has disawoved
condemnation of Miron Cozma by the Supreme Court. Mr. Vadim Tudor said that
the GRP was involved in no way in the events this January and added that
responsibility for the effects of Mr. Cozma's conviction was to be hold by
the actual rulers. RADOR, February 17
[04] Trade and Industry Ministry says miners' action has no social
motivation
Trade and Industry Ministry said the actions by some miners' union leaders
following the Supreme Courts' decision in Miron Cozma case had no
connection to the economic situation of the National Pitcoal Company and to
the miners' wages. Given that all union's requests were solved by the
agreement signed in Cozia the Ministry says that starting on January 22
1999 there is no request of economic nature by the miners. The ministry
calls the miners to see the situation clearly and to evaluate the effects
of any kind of events - the Ministry's communique signed by Minister Radu
Berceanu said. RADOR, February 17
[05] Miners' leader arrested
Protesting miners coming from Petrosani clashed with riot police troops
near the town of Stoenesti at dawn on Wednesday. In the morning, after
rejecting the miners in a counteroffensive the police started arresting
protesters. A couple of hours after that, the miners' leader Miron Cosma
was arrested in the city of Slatina. The head of the General Police
Inspectorate General Nicolae Berechet confirmed that information. RADOR,

[06] The Parliament passed this year's state budget and social insurance
budget
In absence of opposition representatives the Parliament passed this year's
state budget and social insurance budget. Income amount was set to 86,884
billion lei and expenses to 99,975 billions. Before the final vote the
opposition left saying that all over 100 ammenmdments it proposed were
rejected one by one by the representatives of the ruling coalition.
Opposition representatives have also said that the ruling coalition was the
only responsible for this budget. While present there Prime-Minister Radu
Vasile admitted that the actual budget was not fully meeting the needs but
that it reflected the Romanian economic realitites. The Prime-Minister
expressed satisfaction for the budget being passed so soon thus creating
opportunity for negotiations with the IMF to start. RADOR, February 17

As editor in chief of "Greater Romania" magazine the leader of Greater
Romania Party Corneliu Vadim Tudor has presented a video recording of an
interview with lawyer Luminita Neamtu who said she had intimate relations
with President Costntinescu between 1990 and 1996. RADOR, February 17
[08] Labor Minister announces indexation and re-correlation of pensions
After the social insurance budget passed the Labor Mnister Voctior
Athanasiu told the press that within 2 or 3 months the state budget would
be corrected and it would allow better indexation and re-correlation of
pensions. A 0.6% indexation is applied since January. The Minister said
that pensions would still be delivered through the Postal service. RADOR,

[09] Protest of the Drivers' Union Federation
The Drivers' Union Federation organized a protest in front of the Finance
Ministry and Chamber of Deputies buildings on Tuesday. They protested
against fuel price raises. Some 150 heavy trucks took part in the protest.
The president of the Federation Victor Stan said a future meeeting of the
Fedration's Council is due to set up further actions to be taken. RADOR,

[10] Negotiations with IMF representatives
Negotiations with IMF representatives took place at the Finance Ministry on
Tuesday. Finance Minister Traian Remes had a round of talks with the head
of the IMF mission to Romania Emanuel Zervoudakis. Chief economist of the
National Bank of Romania Valentin Lazea was also present at the meeting. He
said that negotiations with the head of the NBR were due to take place on
Monday and that the start of these talks was not known until now. RADOR,

[11] Spanish Defence Minister meets Romanian officials
Following the invitation by the Romanian Defence Minister, the Spanish
Defence Minister Eduardo Serra Rexach came to Bucharest on Tuesday where he
had talks with the Romanian Foreign Minister Andrei Plesu on bilateral
cooperation between the two countries. The Spanish Government is backing
Romania for joining the EU and NATO. The Romanian party has stressed
Romania's interest in joining NATO soon and its wish for the summit in
Washington to bring something more than the one in Madrid. The Romanian
Defemnce Minister Victor Babiuc attended the last part of the meeting
between Mr Eduardo Serra and Andrei Plesu. The Spanish Defence Minister was
also received by President Emil Constantinescu. RADOR, February 17
[12] British Allied Deals took over ELCOND in Zalau
The British company Allied Deals took over 51% of ELCOND company stock on
Tuesday. The deal is worth of over 6.8 million dollars including five year
investments. The State Ownwership Fund has also received two offers on
privatization of RomNav company in Braila one from the company's employees'
association and the other one from the Broadhurst Investment company.
