[01] Miners' strike looks like an organized action
Deputy Prosecutor George Balan said that last week's miners' protest action
was investigated by the Supreme Court of Justice under accussation of
undermining the state power. Mr Balan said that there were evidences
leading to the cnclusion that the miners' strike was an organized and
concerted action. RADOR, January 29
[02] Meeting of the PSD leaders with representatives of the Cartel Alfa
union federation
Leaders of the Party for Social Democracy (PSD) have met a delegation of
the Cartel Alfa union federation. The PSD is backing the idea of a coherent
national strategy aimed to stop the economic decline and the fall of life
standards. These ideas are due to be put in as programme to be adopted by
the National Council of the Party meeting on February 5. The PSD is also
due to propose talks with the Liberals as they have common concerns over
drawing the country out of the crisis. The PSD has also accepted all
proposals by the union federation, and it will back them in the Parliament.

[03] GRP is not going to accept Cozma's return
The Greater Romania Party has decided not to accept Miron Cozma's return as
member of the party following his resignation from the party. The decision
of the Directing Committee of the party was taken because the bad influence
Miron Cozma had on the party's image. RADOR, January 29
[04] Liberal Party's opinion on lifting Senator Vadim Tudor's parlimaentary
immunity
The National Liberal party has said that they had to lift Senator Vadim
Tudor's parlimaentary immunity now more than ever. The Liberal Party is
going to back a rapid procedure aimed to ensure that. The Liberal leaders
have also called for procedures to be started on outlawing the Greater
Romania Party. RADOR, January 29
[05] PSD' opinon on miners' protest action
The Party for Social Democracy (PSD) has said that the miners' protest was
an organized rebellion aimed to alter the state order. The miners' protest
were a paramilitary action whose success was favored by failures of
security forces. RADOR, January 29
[06] Losses in the mining sector have to decrease by 20%
If within 24 days administration and union leaders in Valea Jiului area do
not conceive a plan for reducing losses in the mining sector by 20% the
Trade and Industry Ministry will apply the restructuring plan approved by
the Government - State Secretary Nicolae Staiculescu said. He believes that
miners' protest actions had no economic reason and that the measures taken
by the Government are correct. Mr Staiculescu said he was the only owner of
a copy of the agreement signed in Cozia and therefore he could say there
was no mention of wages or subsidies in that document. RADOR, January 29
[07] Debates over draft 1999 budget
Budget, finance and banking commissions within the Senate and the Chamber
of Deputies have started debates over the 1999 draft budget. MPs have
rejected Finance Ministry's proposal callind for the bills no 70 and 92 on
export and investment facilities to be temporarily cancelled. RADOR,

[08] Sharelolders at the bauxite extraction company in Dobresti decided for
closing down the company
The General Sharelolders Association at the BAUXITAMIN company in Dobresti
decided for closing down the company. This company is the only bauxite
extraction company in the country. the reson for shutting down the comoany
is that its only customer, the aluminum plant ALOR in the city of Oradea
was also closed. Unemployment rate in the Dobresti area has raised from 37%
to 70%. The company still has 40,000 tons of bauxite that could not be

[09] Romania has to get foreign aid quickly
While in a visit to Germany the Romanian Prime Minister Radu Vasile met
members of the social-democrat faction in the Bundestag. The Vice-President
of the faction Gernold Erler has said that there is full consensus over
foreign policy within the ruling coalition in Germany. Chancellor Schroeder
and Foreign Minister Fischer agree that enlargement to the East of the EU
has to include all countries betwen Slovenia and Grece as quyickly as
