[01] Senate speaker's press conference in Arad
The speaker of the Romanian Senate, Petre Roman, said that since Hungary
was accepted as NATO member, the rejection of Romania's candidacy was a
mistake. While in Arada on Suday, the leader of the Democratic party (PD)
has told a press conference that he hoped the Hungarian Government would
not change the policy the country's former prime minister Gyula Horn has
been promoting. Mr Roman said that, as far as the setting up of a Hungarian
language teaching university was concerned, no agreement was reached over
the issue. On the other hand, the PD leader said that emergency measures
should be taken for a 45% raise in the custom duties on wheat and flour
imports. Refering to the fact that the Arad leadership of the Christian
Democrat National Peasant Party (PNTCD) has denied the Transport Minister
Traian Basescu the access in the county of Arad, Mr Roman has warned that
such a political diversion might become a source of tensions. RADOR, July
