[01] End of UDMR Council of Representatives' meeting
In a statement issued at the end of its Council of Representatives' meeting
in Cluj-Napoca on Sunday, the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in
Romania (UDMR) said priorities in the governing programme concerning the
interests of Romania's Hungarian minority were not answered as planned. The
UDMR declaration calls on the House of Deputies to adopt the Ordinance2
37/1997 and the new amendments to the Budget by October 31. The Parliament
is asked to complete the Education Law by the end of its working session,
and then take concrete measures concerning the setting up of a Hungarian
language teaching state university. UDMR believes that "its governing role
may become impossible unless the above conditions are met". Participants in
the meeting have also approved the UDMR deputies' decision to dismiss
Health Minister Francisc Baranyi for his alleged cooperation with the
former Romanian secret service, the Securitate. The decision has been also
approved by the UDMR branch in the county of Timis. RADOR
[02] Statement of UDMR Honorary President Laszlo Tokes
At the UDMR Council of Representatives' meeting on Sunday, UDMR Honorary
President, Bishop Laszlo Tokes, has tried to respond to accusations
concerning his alleged cooperation with former Securitate services. The
UDMR honorary president said he had no relations with the former political
polic2 while on the contrary, he was a victim of it. Bishop Tokes has also
indicated he might be the "victim of some of his UDMR colleagues'
intrigues". Such colleagues would like to have him removed from the UDMR
leadership, and more, they were trying to damage his public image, Bishop
Tokes insisted. RADOR
[03] PNTCD Vicepresident Vasile Lupu on PNTCD's TUNTCD National Committee
final resolution
The Vicepresident of the ruling Christian Democrat National Peasant Party
(PNTCD), Vasile Lupu, said the meeting of PNTCD Youth Organisation (TUNTCD)
in Calimanesti had nothing to worry about nor could be seen as a meeting of
a PNTCD disident group. He pointed out that such meetings could not affect
his party's unity. If Prime Minister Radu Vasile expressed criticism
against the former government, then he should prove he might achieve more
than that, Mr Vasile Lupu added. RADOR
[04] The Appeal Court in Bucharest has confirmed Horia Rusu as PL president
The Third Civil Department of the Appeal Co2rt in Bucharest has approved
the amendments to the Liberal Party (PL) statute according to the party's
National Council and Executive Committee decision made on April 4. The
court has dismissed Mr Nicolae Cerveni's personal complaint to reject the
request of Dinu Patriciu, one of the PL's former leaders. The Appeal Court
has confirmed Horia Rusu as president of the PL. The court's ruling is
final and irrevocable. PL Vicepresident Octavian Bot believes the ruling is
an enormous blunder, and it may have two explanations: "the judges were
inexperienced or they have been bribed". Mr Bot says that, taking into
account the evidence given, the ruling of the court is absolutely
inexplicable. RADOR
[05] Former Romanian sovereign, King Michael I, on a visit to Valcea county
Romania's former sovereign, King Michael I, and his wife, Queen Ana, have
continued their private visit to Romania. The arrived in the county of
Valcea on Sunday. At the Sibiu entrance in Valcea, the Royal Family was
give2 a warm welcome by MPs and representatives of the local administration
in the county of Valcea. Then they have all travelled to the village of
Vaideeni where the "Invartita dorului" shepherds' custom was celebrated.

[06] Landslides in Bacau county
11 oil derricks and several homes in the Romanian village of Zemes, Bacau
county, are threatened by landslides affecting around 10 hectares of land.
Energy sources supplying the derricks and access routes to other 22 oil
plants were also affected. Damages raise up to 22 million lei daily and the
Moinesti branch of PETROM has submitted to the SNP (National Oil Company) a
project designed to secure the area. Nevertheless, the project may not
become operational unless stability in the area is ensured. According to
geologists, the 80-hectare landslide is 18-20 meter wide and it is getting
1 meter wider each day. A similar landslide was reported near the town of
Buhushi while the main access route to the village of Schitul Frumos was
c2mpletely blocked. RADOR
[07] Hungarian Civil Defence Department is ready to help Romanians in need
following recent floods
The Mayor General of Budapest has ordered the Civil Defence Department in
the city to prepare for aid operations destined to Romanians in need
following recent floods. Gabor Demszky said Budapest was ready to provide
food and medicine aid and send experts in the affected areas. The Civil
Defence Department in Budapest had good results in aid operations carried
out during floods in Poland and the Czech Republic last year. RADOR
[08] In its attempt to join NATO, Romania should draw up a new strategy
In its attempt to join NATO, Romania should draw up a new strategy. A new
policy is however difficult to achieve as there are still differences
between government members over the issue. The State Secretary with the
National Defence Ministry (MApN), Constantin Dudu Ionescu, is convinced
that Romania may join NATO even next year. He believes that in case NATO
will decid2 its further expansion, then Romania will be among the countries
invited to join it in the second round. While on his recent visit to
Germany, he was assured that Bonn was sharing similar opinions. The German
authorities have reiterated however that additional assurances over the
issue were given to the Baltic States as they were also NATO candidates.
