[02] PNL press communique
PNL first vicepresident Valeriu Stoica has told a press conference on
Thursday that the National Liberal Party (PNL) assumed every responsibility
as member of the Cabinet since December 1996, and more, it renounced its
own identity to the benefit of the Democratic Convention in Romania (CDR)
and the governing coalition as a whole. PNL says recent regretable events
indicate however that some parties and officials in the governing coalition
limited themselves from the actions and legal initiatives the Government
undertook. PNL reminds its coalition partners that the violation of the
coalition's guiJelines may lead to a new political crisis and asks all MP
groups of the majority to support the Vasile Cabinet in its efforts to
achieve the governing programme. Referring to recent demands put forward by
the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), the PNL
vicepresident said the coalition leaders did not surrender, but only
complied with the protocol already agreed. RADOR
[03] PD and PDSR expected to meet again
The vicepresident of the Democratic Party (PD), Bogdan Niculescu-Duvaz,
told a press conference on Thursday that his party and the opposition Party
of Social Democracy in Romania (PDSR) were expected to meet again in the
next few days. PD ministers Traian Basescu and Radu Berceanu are to present
the PDSR MP group with the restructuring programme of autonomous utilities.
Mr Duvas has mentioned the PD previously informed its main coalition
partner - the Christian Democrat National Peasant Party (PNTCD) - that it
was about to meet PDSR representatives. He howevJr stopped short of
mentioning what was the PNTCD reaction to the news. He explained that, at
least for the time being, a social-democrat pole was still not expected to
be established through an alleged alliance between the PD and PDSR. RADOR
[04] National Education Ministry communique
RRA, the Romanian Ministry for National Education (MEN) says the demands
the Hungarian community put forward concerning the setting up of a
Hungarian language teaching university - solutions based on both ethnic
integration or separation - were unproductive for all parties involved.
Education Minister Andrei Marga, who has actually signed the communique,
believes that multicultural structures are most accurate. The reform of the
educational system is providing solutions to all sorts of cultural problems,
the Hungarian community's claims included. RADOR
[05] PSDR press conference
The leadership of the Romanian Social Democrat Party (PSDR) believes the
Government should have the political will to fight Jll obstacles, whatever
big they were, and achieve the restructuring programme of autonomous
utilities. PSDR Vicepresident Smaranda Dobrescu has told a press conference
on Thursday that the RENEL restructuring ( ed.n. RENEL - Romanian national

lower prices in economy. RADOR
[06] Further debates over art. 20 in the law allowing access to former
Securitate files
At the Senate session on Thursday, PNTCD Senator Corneliu Turianu said the
article 20 in the law allowing access to your own former Securitate file
and the disclosure of the institution as political police should be
adopted. The article referres to the transfer of all Securitate records in
the archives of ministries and SRI (ed.n. Romanian Intellgence Service) to
the National Council for Studies of Former Securitate Archives. Mr Turianu
said he could not understand how could the legal commission in the Senate
reject the article when, only a few months agoJ it had approved it. The
senator believes that preserving the former Securitate files in the
archives of ministries and SRI would make their examination very difficult,
and today officials - alleged former informers - would feel protected.
