[01] A goverment statement
The Romanian Government has decided to go ahead with the draft law which
amending Law 42 that granted certain privileges to participants in the 1989
revolution and does not intend to give in to pressure of 1989
revolutionaries on hunger strike for several days. The announcement was
made by government spokesman Eugen Serbanescu after the late night
government meeting on Saturday. "The government is not bound by any
agreement with the protesters because the latter have not kept their own
commitments and put forward other claims, some impossible to meet, and
others having a political character", the government spokesman said. The
draft law, which will drastically cut privileges granted to revolutionaries,
has already been submitted to parliament. RRI-RADOR, October 20
[02] IMF Chief Negotiator Poul Thomsen back to Bucharest
IMF chief negociator Poul Thomsen is in Bucharest again to examinate the
way Romanian government fulfil its commitments. Romanian Minister of
Finance Mircea Ciumara declared that meeting Mr. Thomsen would be a matter
of routine and the needed financing for the next year was to be decided the
next month."I am waiting to meet Mr. Thomsen, but these are routine
meetings, they are not official as we only want to be sure that the IMF wll
grant all financing for 1998 and that, during the G-24, IMF, EBRD, WB etc.
Consultative Council in November, we are to be told exactly the amount of
money we are going to receive in the next three years. I hope we shall be
able to draw up a concrete three-year programme to finalise the reform, so
that Romanians can feel their frustrations during the year were not

[03] International Technological Fair (TIB) closed
The most important exhibition of the year, the International Technological
Fair 1997 closed yesterday. For six days, the visiting businessmen had the
opportunity to find both Romanian or foreign partners and establish new
connections. Participants included 1400 companies from 30 countries. Many
of the attenders have exhibited under their national flags: Japan, South
Africa, France, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Austria, the US, Canada, Germany.
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI was awarded the International Exhibition Centre
Romexpo Bucharest Diploma for its coverage. RADOR, October 20
[04] New expectations in Romanian-Hungarian relations
Hungarian Prime Minister Gyula Horn is to arrive in Bucharest tomorrow for
a two-day visit following the invitation of his Romanian counterpart,
Victor Ciorbea - the Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) informs. Mr. Gyula
Horn will be accompanied by a delegation of businessmen and economic
experts. The talks between the two officials are to be focused on the
economic dimensions in relations between the two countries. Aspects of the
joint Bucharest-Budapest highway and railroad project as well as the
economic potential of river Danube are to be discussed. According to a MAE
report, the Hungarian visit will add new dimensions to the relationship
between the two countries in their joint efforts to join the European and
Euro-Atlantic structures. RADOR, October 20
[05] Romanian Foreign Minister Severin on a visit to Denmark
On October 20-21, Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin will pay an
official visit to Denmark upon the invitation of his Danish counterpart
Niels Helveg Petersen, Romanian Foreign Ministry has announced. The main
topics to be discussed during the visit include Romania's European and Euro-
Atlantic integration and the building of a new security architecture on the
continent. The Romanian official will be received by Her Majesty the Queen
of Denmark, the Danish prime minister and the speaker of Danish Parliament
and will deliver a speech on "Romania on Her Path to the EU" during a round
table at the Danish Institute for Foreign Relations. RRI- RADOR, October

Weather in Romania will be sunny but cold for this time of the year. Some
showers are forecast in northern parts of the country. Temperatures will
