  • [01] NATO session in Bucharest

    The annual session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the North-Atlantic Alliance started in Bucharest on Thursday. The session, the first to be held in a former communist country, is atteded by 250 MPs from NATO Member and Associate States. North-Atlantic Assembly Secretary General Simon Lunn told a press conferece that the meeting had a two-fold meaning for Romania: it is both sign of recognition and progress Romania has made on its way to democracy and one of trust by the members in the Aliance that this positive evolution will continue.     [02] Hungarian Foreign Minister Laszlo Kovacs left Romania

    Hungarian Foreign Minister Laszlo Kovacs paid a two-day visit to Bucharest and had talks with Romanian President Emil Constantinescu, Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea and Foreign Minister Adrian Severin. Among other concerns, the visit was aimed at settling the details of the visit of Hungarian Prime Minister Gyula Horn to Romania, later this month. The Hungarian foreign minister also took part in the first meeting of the Inter- Governmental Commission for co-operation and active partnership between Romania and Hungary.

    At the end of his visit to Bucharest, Laszlo Kovacs said the Romanian Government has made considerable steps in improving the situation of Hungarian minority but the move should be followed by decisions at legisative level. Mr. Kovacs also mentioned anti-Hungarian attitude in Romanian media as well as in political statements of some top politicians. Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin sad Laszlo Kovacs's visit to Bucharest was marked by an unprecedented development of the partnership between the two countries. Severin added that Romania was interested in Hungary's integration into NATO and the move should be carried out quickly and unhindered. As far as Romania's EU integration is concered, the two countries have agreed that, whatever the EU decision would be, it would have to provide equal chances for all EU Applicant States.     [03] Romanian President Constantinescu in Strasbourg

    Romanian President Emil Constantinescu participates in the meeting of heads of states and governments of the Member States in the Council of Europe. Mr. Constantinescu had talks with Mrs. Leni Fischer, president of the Parliamentary Assembly, and members of the Romanian communities in Alsace and Lorraine provinces. RRI-RADOR, October 10

    [04] US-Romanian strategic partnership

    "The strategic US-Romanian partnership is not a substitute for Romania's integration into NATO, but one of the ways of preparing the country to join the Alliance", Romanian Defence Minister Victor Babiuc said on Thursday, during a press conference. Referring to miliary co-operation at regional level, Mr. Babiuc said Romania was negotating its participation in the Italian-Slovenian-Hungarian and Hungarian-Austrian joint forces. Afar as miltary suplies are concerned, minister Babiuc said that part of additional allowances from the budget would be graned for revamping and upgrading technical facilities. RRI-RADOR, October 10

    [05] Romanian Foreign Minister Severin met OIAC Director General

    Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin had talks with Jose Mauricio Bustani, Director General of OIAC (Organisation for Banning Chamical Weapons). Mr. Bustani said this was his first visit to a member state in the Chemical Weapon Convention and added that the visit should be seen as a sign of appreciation for Romania. Romania was one of the first states to sign and ratify the convention. RRI-RADOR, October 10
