  • [01] Romania at the annual CEFTA meeting

An official delegation led by Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea took part in the annual meeting of CEFTA Member States held in Slovenia on Friday and Saturday. Late Saturday night on his way home, Mr. Ciorbea declared: "We have talked about the way in which the last year objectives were accomplished. Of course, the situation is to be analysed by the CEFTA trade and prime ministers as well. The results will establish future relations between CEFTA Member States. Regarding the future activity of the organization they emphasized the necessity of continuing and completing negotiations on the free movement of money and services as well as to provide a more secure trade".

Prime Minister Ciorbea said he was satisfied with the results of the summit. In his opinion, all the decisions taken there are in the benefit of all CEFTA countries, but, on the other hand, he stopped short in estimating "minor differences between some members". Differences appeared between Hungary and Slovakia but they ended following concessions made by the Slovakian prime minister. Victor Ciorbea seemed to be optimistic saying that the disagreements between the two countries should be solved only by those involved without any other intrusion.

On the last day of the CEFTA summit Mr. Ciorbea met his counterparts from CEFTA Applicant States. He had an important meeting with the Ukranian Prime Minister Valeri Kusovitenco about the money Ukraine owes to Romania. The debts of about 1 billion USD is the result of the Romanian investments in Krivoirog plant. The two prime ministers decided to continue the debates on on matter stressing that the problem could be solved only through dialogue. As concerns this, Victor Ciorbea said: "We have agreed to set up immediately a joint team aimed at solving the current situation. The two prime ministers also agreed on finalising the work on the Ukrainean side of the pipeline that connects the Romanian town of Satu Mare with the town of Kus in Ukraine. RADOR,September 15

The National Bank of Romania, the BNR, has published a report according to which this year the Romanians' living standards went down with 30% in comparison with the same period of the last year. Alexandru Athanasiu, the Minister of Work and Social Protection said this situation is the result of the former executive policy. He considered the situation as serious, adding the present executive would do its best to help the population. Mr. Athansiu said the most affected by poverty are the families with many children and he proposed an aid programme destined exclusively to these families. RADOR, September 15

[03] Prime Minister Ciorbea and the IMF

Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea welcomed the IMF approval of the rectified memorandum. The result of IMF decision will be a new loan granted to Romania. Mr. Ciorbea said the decision showed that the IMF recognized Romanian Government's achievements in the process of reform and the approval was even more important than the loan itself.
