  • [01] Hungarian president Arpad Goncz is visiting Romania

    The president of Hungary, Arpad Goncz, started on Sunday a three-day official visit to Romania, which he qualified as "historic". After talks with his Romanian counterpart Emil Constantinescu, he declared that Hungary does its best for Romania to accede to NATO in the first wave as well as to the EU. He said that an atmosphere of confidence should reign between the two countries, a direction in which most important steps have been already made. The president of Hungary pointed out that a large part of the provisions of the framework political treaty have been implemented or their implementation is underway. "I invited the president of Romania to visit Hungary with love and friendship", Arpad Goncz said. In his turn, president Constantinescu disclosed the concrete elements of the talks: the building of a Bucharest-Budapest highway, more judicious utilization of the Danube and of joint railway network, the removal of bureaucratic barriers in front of Romanian and Hungarian busonessmen, the cooperation in fight against organized crime, the development of university and cultural relations on basis of confidence. Arpad Goncz also met Romanian prime minister Victor Ciorbea who estimated that there are now unprecedented opportunities for the development of Romanian-Hungarian relations. Victor Ciorbea announced that the Romanian currency, the Leu, will become convertible quite soon. The president of Hungary also participated in the International Consumer Goods Fair within a Romanian-Hungarian Business Forum. A series of accords have been concluded on the occasion between the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of the two countries and between Romanian and Hungarian banks. RRI-RADOR, May 26

    [02] American congressman Tom Lantos is in Romania again

    Romanian prime minister Victor Ciorbea met American congressman Tom Lantos yesterday on the occasion on his visit as head of a delegation of American and Canadian businessmen trying to extend cooperation with our country. Tom Lantos invited Mr Ciorbea to the US, on the occasion of the opening of a Romanian art exhibition in June. Romanian prime minister accepted the invitation but he added he also would like to meet American politicians and diplomats. RRI-RADOR, May 1997

    [03] European MPs in Bucharest

    The spring session of the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly is taking place in Bucharest between May 26 and 28. After Hungary and Poland, Romania is the third East-European country hosting such an important event. Participants include 250 MPs of 33 countries. On Sunday, the European guests travelled to the mountain resort of Sinaia for a short visit. RRI- RADOR, May 1997

    [04] Planning Conference for a NATO lead training exercise

    The main Planning Conference of the NATO lead "Cooperative Determination '97" trainig exercise will take place in the Romanian central city of Sibiu between May 26 and 30. Operations are planned for this autumn and participants include troops from France, Azerbaidjan, Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Republic of Moldova, Portugal, Slovakia, the US, Turkey, Hungary and Uzbekistan. The conference is to establish strategies and operational details of the exercise. RRI-RADOR, May 1997

    [05] Romanian companies on the stock market in Salonic

    A member of the Romanian delegation who accompanied president Emil Constantinescu during his official visit to Greece announced that up to 15 Romanian companies will be privatised through the stock market in Salonic. The same source said Greece was also interested in the privatization of the Romanian Bamk for Development. Two Romanian business centres will open in Athens and Salonic and a Greek one - in Bucharest, the official added. RRI- RADOR, May 26

    Weather in Romania is becoming colder and cloudy in most parts of the country. Rain falls are forecast in the afternoon, excepting the South- Eastern regions. Temperatures will range from 15 to 25 centigrades. RRI- RADOR, May 26
