Subject: U.N. Statement in Wake of NATO Air Strike Against Bosnian Serb Military Targets From: "Demetrios E. Paneras" SG/SM/5712 29 August 1995 IN WAKE OF NATO AIR STRIKE AGAINST BOSNIAN SERB MILITARY TARGETS, SECRETARY-GENERAL SAYS NEGOTIATED SETTLEMENT IS STILL UN GOAL The following statement was issued tonight by the Spokesman for the Secretary-General: The United Nations, after establishing that the deadly attack on the centre of Sarajevo on Monday came from Bosnian Serb positions, yesterday authorized the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to conduct air strikes against Bosnian Serb military targets. The objective of this action is to deter further attacks on Sarajevo and other United Nations- designated safe areas in fulfilment of Security Council resolution 836. The air action was conducted in accordance with understandings reached between the United Nations and NATO following the North Atlantic Council decisions of 25 July and 1 August, which were endorsed by the SecretaryGeneral of the United Nations. It is essential that it be clearly understood that the United Nations goal in Bosnia remains unchanged -- it is to help relieve the suffering of the civilian victims of war and to pave the way for a negotiated settlement. The only enemy of the United Nations is the war itself. The Secretary General urges the parties to seize the opportunity now before them to enter a definitive round of negotiations. It is time for the bloodshed to end. * *** *
