  • [01] Opera Carmen, in ballet version for the first time in Albania

    TIRANE, Feb.20 (ata) - By Ornela kadaifciu: For the first time last Saturday the Opera and Ballet Theater put on stage the ballet version of the opera Carmen, performed by young ballerinas of the Choreographic Ballet School in Tirane.

    Arjan Shukniqi, artistic director of the performance, said that "this ballet is an event for the Albanian art for the fact that this is performed for the first time also in world stages."

    The only ballet school in Albania has conducted a number of activities in Albania and in other countries.

    Last October this school took part in the International Contest of the Ballet Schools in Antalia of Turkey and in December it took part in a master of classical ballet in Skopje of Macedonia. /f.n.xh.

    [02] Specialization of doctors elevates level of medical service

    ERSEKE, Feb.20 (ata) - By B Fejzullai: The level of medical service in Kolonja district has been on the increase.

    Vangjel Thomallari, director of public health in that district, told ATA that post-university qualification of the doctors and the furnishing of hospitals with new contemporary equipment has influenced in the elevation of the level of medical service in the district.

    The reconstruction and equipment brought for the hospitals and the medical centres in Kolonje have been realised with funds from the state budget and with the assistance of some international organizations and humanitarian associations.

    The European Union has given considerable aid for the purchase of the necessary equipment for the medical centres, while 26 million lek by the German Government have been used for the construction of two new medical centres in communes Clirim and Barmash. /s.sh/xh/

    [03] Unregistered vehicles blocked in Librazhd

    LIBRAZHD, Feb.20 (ata) - By H Balliu: The road traffic inspectorate in the police department of Librazhd has blocked several vehicles which are not registered in the district taxes branch of the district.

    Artan Kapxhiu, acting chief of the traffic inspectorate, told ATA that they had blocked 3-4 unregistered vehicles almost everyday and had fined them.

    He added that only in the 20 days of February they had blocked 27 vehicles and fined 600 others, at a value of 730 thousand lek. /s.sh/xh/

    [04] Discussion on new possibility in Albanian politics - debate

    TIRANE, Feb.20 (ata) - By Eranda Nepravishta: A debate meeting was held in Tirane on Saturday on the topic "For a new mentality in Albanian politics."

    The meeting was made possible thanks to the cooperation between the department of coordination of youth politics in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the OSCE office in Albania.

    Taking part in the debate were Albanian renowned politicians and publicists.

    The question whether there is a new generation of Albanian politicians, took a positive response in the debate, in which it was stressed that the politicians are in general young because they have an 8-year experience.

    An opinion expressed in the meeting was also that the old politicians have it difficult to take the place of the young. The meeting also discussed the democratic transition, the need for reforms and the fear for changes. /s.sh/xh/

    [05] Albania working to integrate in All-European Audiovisual programs - Minister

    TIRANE, Feb.20 (ata) - The first meeting of the representatives of Audiovisual Institutions held in Athens from Feb.19-20, was also attended by Albanian Minister of Information, Musa Ulqini.

    In the plenary session, Mr.Ulqini made a panorama of the developments of Audiovisual institutions in Albania. He stressed in particular the adoption of a number of laws governing the activity of radio, television, cinematography, copyright, radio-tv frequencies, etc., and some of the problems this sector is presently facing.

    The Minister of Information spoke of the work being made for the integration of Albania in All-European audiovisual programs.

    Mr Ulqini had meetings with representatives of 11 countries of Southeastern Europe and with leaders of some European organizations.

    The executive department of the all-European program "Eureka Audio- visual," Silvi Forbin, voiced the readiness for Albania to become a member of that important institution this year.

    While Suzan Nikolcev, representative of the European Audiovisual Observatory, expressed her readiness to assist Albania with special programs in helping the Albanian Radio-television become public and in the professional qualification of the National Council of Radio-Television, as the body responsible to giving licences to private medias.

    Olga Klimaki, head of the Greek Audiovisual Institute, and presiding the two institutions for this year, expressed to Minister Ulqini her readiness to contribute to Albania's membership in those organizations.

    During his stay in Athens, Mr Ulqini also met with representatives of the Albanians living and working in Greece and had intensive contacts with many Greek press representatives. /pas/xh/

    [06] Foreign investments - the greatest possible aid for Vlore

    VLORE, Feb.21 (ata) - By Harilla Koci: The CE representative in Albania, Andreas Papakonstantinou, met Saturday with heads of local government of Vlore and with the director of the prefecture police.

    According to the secretary general of the prefecture of Vlore, Arqile Lici, the high official of CE was informed of the situation in Vlore and of the present needs of that city.

    Participants in the meeting stressed that there have been abuses with reports published about Vlore, which have described the city as totally incriminated in the men-smuggling through speedboats, something which is not true at all. 300-400 or 500 people cannot represent a whole city of over 100 000 people, who want to ensure their living means through legal ways, was stressed in the meeting, according to Lici.

    The mayor of Vlore, Neki Dredha, said that Vlore needs foreign investments and this is the greatest possible aid for this city and not the abusive reports which do nothing but keep the investors away. /pas/xh/

    [07] Albania after 90s in the optics of three works by Prec Zogaj

    TIRANE, feb.20 (ata) - By Ornela Kadaifciu: The triple by the writer Prec Zogaj, "Fall of Elections," "Non-civil War," and "Eternal Summer" was presented Saturday evening in one of the halls of Hotel Tirane in the presence of personalities of Albanian politics, art and press.

    The three political-literary books, published by Spekter Publishing House, treat real events, which the author has described after his intellectual investigation, experience and observation.

    The book "Fall of Elections" covers the 90s. This essay is the first work of historic character in the creativeness of the writer, Prec Zogaj.

    The book "Non-civil War" makes coverage of the unrest of 1997 in Albania and the consequences of the Albanian society from the collapse of the former investment schemes.

    "Eternal Summer" is a novel with real personages in which Zogaj portrays their characters..

    The writer belongs to the generation of the writers of 80s. His creativeness consists of six poetical volumes, two novels and three volumes with short stories. /pas/xh/

    [08] Kukes prepared in case of eventual war

    KUKES, feb.21 (ata) - By Riza Hoxha: Kukes, northeastern Albania, is being prepared in case a war breaks.

    The tense situation on the border and the frequent provocations by Serb military forces in the Albanian territory have made local government structures and those of the army to intesify their cooperation and to adopt a number of measures to be prepared in case of the new situations that may emerge.

    "The emergency commissions have been set up in communes and villages," said to ATA the chief of the District Mobilization Branch, lieutenant colonel Zaim Noka.

    Noka said that cooperation with local government structures has ensured a regular recruitment of the young boys who have reached the age to be called up. He addded that they have verified the youths who are presently working outside Albania and stressed that the parents have pledged they will call their children to return home for their regular military service. /pas/xh/

    [09] Wrestler Troplini to represent Sport Club Teuta in Sydney Olympic Games

    DURRES, Feb.21 (ata) - By Gezim Kabashi: Shkelqim Troplini, absolute champion for over 100 kg weight in free wrestling, will represent Albania together with 29 other Albanian sportsmen in the Olympic Games to be held in Sydney of Australia in summer of 2000.

    The Durres wrestler, 32, is the only representative of Sport Club Teuta. Troplini, national champion for ten years, coached by Fuat Bardhi, will compete among other wrestlers throughout the world for the second time. He represented Albanian sport in Atlanta Games in 1996. /s.sh/xh/

    [10] Aid for Lezha hospital from Italian Caritas

    LEZHE, Feb.21 (ata) - Italian Caritas send recently an amount of humanitarian aid for the hospital of Lezhe. The director of the hospital, Dede Jaku, told ATA that the aid consists of various medicaments worth 10 000 dollars.

    It is the third time that Italian Caritas sends aid for the hospital of Lezhe. The amount of the aid now meets the needs of the hospital for about 3 months, said Jaku.

    Some months before, Caritas funded the reconstruction of the surgery theater hall. It also invested for the construction of the handicapped rehabilitation centre, which houses about 300 children. It has now brought food items, clothes and various drugs for the displaced Kosova people, who are settled in the town of Shengjin. /s.sh/xh/

    [11] 90th anniversary of first theater performance commemorated in Vlore

    VLORE, Feb. 21 (ATA) - By H. Koci: The 90th anniversary of the first theater performance has been commemorated Saturday in Vlore.

    The first theater performance was shown in February 1909 under the care of the patriotic club "Laberia" of Vlore and it was shown the drama "Pirro's death" of Mihal Grameno.

    In autumn of 1921 in this city it was set up the theater association "FIllodramatika" and in September of 1922, the theater staff put into stage the drama "Religion and nationality" of Kristo Flloqi, which was also greeted by Avni Rustemi.

    In 1924, with the arrival of Fan Noli in Vlore, the theater staff of "Bashkimi" association gave the drama Karl Topia by Kristo Flloqi. /pas/mt/

    [12] Summer day convenes pan-Albanian poets

    ELBASAN, Feb. 21 (ATA) - By H. Balliu: A special activity for the antique town of Elbasan in the framework of the Summer Day for this year will be the organization of the poetic activity entitled "The poetic summer day."

    The organizers of this activity will be the League of Writers and Artists of Albania, the town-hall of Elbasan and the printing house "Onufri."

    Attending this activity will be poets from Albania, Kosova, Macedonia and others. The beauty contest "Miss Skampa" will be also organized in the framework of this day. /pas/mt/

    [13] Blood donors to be protected by their status

    TIRANE, Feb. 21 (ATA) - By R.Xhuvani: The request of the members of Association of Blood donors in Albania to give the status to the blood donors is reasonable and can be completely fulfilled, the spokesman of the Ministry of Health told ATA.

    The status will define all the rights and duties of blood donors in order to avoid the abuses with them.

    According to the spokesman, the only obstacle for this problem is the official procedure and the wrong addressing made by the leaders of this association. The request addressed to the Ministry of Health should be sent to the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

    With regard to the blood price, the ministry has approved its increase. The Association of Blood Donors has some 15 000 members. Despite the problems existing in this field, they have not interrupted their blood donation. /pas/mt/

    [14] Education is important for northern women, girls

    TIRANA, Feb. 21 (ATA) - By E. Nepravishta: Education is considered important for the women and girls of the Northern zones. They do not make any distinction for the education of their children according to the sex.

    The reports are brought by the poll carried out from the association "The Intellectual Woman," and some 320 women and girls have been interviewed from almost the whole territory of Puke.

    Some 60% of the persons interviewed do not make distinctions in the education of children according to the sex. Some 50% of them think that when the family has good economic conditions, the girls may also continue the university studies.

    According to the poll, the economic situation of the northern woman is very difficult and it was further aggravated due to unemployment.

    The poll of this association also notices several aspects of evolution regarding marriage in this areas. There are no cases of engagement of children who are not born yet, or engagement at a very young age. There are no big families, who live in the same house, but if you ever find one this has to do only with the economic factor. /pas/mt/

    [15] Some 5.5 points for Erald Dervishi in international chess championship

    DURRES, Feb. 21 (ATA) - By G. Kabashi: The chess player from Durres, Erald Dervishi, gathered 5.5 points in the international chess championship of Paris, which ended on Saturday evening.

    The Great Master from Durres told ATA by telephone that in the nine matches he held, he had 5 victories, 1 draw and 3 losses. Anyhow, the final classification has not been defined yet.

    Dervishi is a student of justice in the University of Padova, Italy. /dast/mt/

    [16] Serb attacks against Albanians, last efforts to have Kosova under its heel, Milo

    TIRANA, Feb. 21 (ATA) - By I. Paco: The Saudi Arabia and Albania expressed Saturday their concern for the aggravation of the situation in Kosova and the necessity to find a peaceful solution of the conflict there.

    The Saudi Foreign Minister, Saud Bin Faisal, told his Albanian counterpart, Paskal Milo, during a visit he held in Riyadh that "it is clear now for the Saudi Arabia that the Serb attacks against the Albanians are the last efforts to keep Kosova under the heel." He also said that "we hope the Contact Group will take reasonable decisions and will act soon."

    Milo informed his Saudi counterpart for the progress of talks in Rambouillet.

    Both ministers also discussed on the bilateral relations and agreed to increase the level of economic cooperation and finish the projects which have already started.

    Faisal assured Minister Milo that his government will encourage the local investors to come to Albania.

    The chief of the Albanian diplomacy, Paskal Milo, turned to Tirana on Sunday. /dast/mt/
