  • [01] People's Assembly opens its first session for 1999

    TIRANE, Jan.18 (ata) - By I Luto: The People's Assembly of Albania opened Monday its 4th session of the 15th Legislature and adopted the two- week calendar of the work of this assembly.

    The People's Assembly will resume work on Thursday, with the adoption of some draft laws such as that on Nationality in the Republic of Albania, the state secret etc.

    Besides the approval of the statement on Kosove, in the first session, the Parliament continued with a session of questions with the Minister of Public Economy and Privatization, Ylli Bufi, demanded by the deputy of Korce, Niko Faber.

    This was the formal opening of the Parliament for 1999. An extraordinary session convened last week for the approval of some draft laws considered as urgent by the Council of Ministers, such as the law on the ban of illegal traffic. /lh/xh/

    [02] Burial of the victims of Serb massacre in Recak postponed

    TIRANE, Jan.18 (ata) - The burial of 52 victims of the Serb massacre in Recak village last Friday, as reported from the KLA General Staff, will be made later, the Kosovapress Agency reports.

    Because of the very grave situation prevailing in the villages near Shtimje yesterday, the burial is postponed until more proper conditions are created.

    Serb forces, according to the agency, tried to take the bodies of the victims yesterday, allegedly for investigation, but their real aim was to hide the traces of their crime. The barbarians could not take the bodies and according to reports they are in a safe place. /lh/xh/

    [03] Official visit of Greek Interior, Public Administration and Decentralization Minister to Tirane

    TIRANE, Jan. 18 (ata) - A delegation led by the Minister of Interior Affairs, Public Administration and Decentralization of Greece, Alexandros Papadopouulos, will visit Tirane from Jan.20-21, 1999.

    As reported by the cabinet of the Albanian Ministry of Information, during the first day of the visit, the Greek Minister is expected to meet with the President of Albania, Rexhep Meidani, Prime Minister Pandeli Majko, Deputy Prime Minister Ilir Meta, his Albanian counterpart Petro Koci, ministers Demeti, Angjeli and the Arch Bishop of Tirane, Durres and all Albania, His Excellency Anastas.

    The second day will start with a meeting with deputies of the Human Rights Union Party and OMONIA to continue then with a joint press conference which will close the visit of the Greek Minister to Tirane. /s.sh/xh/

    [04] Agreement of Cooperation between two central banks signed between Albania and Greece

    TIRANE, Jan.19 (ata) - By Lolita Thanasi: For the first time the Governor of a central bank of another state visits the Bank of Albania. The governor of the Bank of Greece, Lucas Papademos, who has come to Albania invited by the Governor of the Bank of Albania, Shkelqim Cani, attended in Tirane today the seminar on questions of European Monetary Union and the effects of Euro in the economic developments.

    The most important moment of the meeting between the two bank governors was the signing of an agreement of cooperation between two Central Banks, exchange of experience and information regarding the observation of the branches of the Greek banks and their affiliates in Albania and vice versa. They also discussed the signing soon of an agreements between the two banks. /lh/xh/

    [05] Albanian Premier congratulates Haxhi Hafiz Sabri Koci on occasion of Fiter Bairam

    TIRANE, Jan.19 (ata) - Albanian Prime Minister Pandeli Majko send a message of greetings Monday to His Excellency Haxhi Hafiz Sabri Koci, chairman of the Albanian Moslem Community.

    "On occasion of the day of Fiter Bairam, I share my most sincere wishes with all Albanian Moslem believers, in and outside our beloved country," says the telegram of PM Majko, who wishes that "let the voluntary sacrifices made for the sake of the belief in God serve the increase of patience, tolerance and understanding, contribute to the process of the social and moral reconciliation and broader the reliable development of Albania."

    "We are peace-loving people and resolute to defend the freedom that some hotheaded people and forces want to take from us," writes the telegram.

    Albanian PM Pandeli Majko closed with the wish: "Let this celebration bring to all Albanians prosperity, peace, understanding and unity, joy and love for each other, for work, life and the prosperity of the Homeland." /pas/xh/

    [06] Lakrori leaves on Wednesday on an official visit to Hungary

    TIRANE, Jan.19 (ata) - By I Luto: Albanian Secretary of State for European Integration Maqo Lakrori will leave Wednesday on an official two- day visit to Hungary.

    The press department of the Foreign Ministry of Albania told ATA that the aim of the visit of the State Secretary, Lakrori, to Budapest will be to open the road for a concrete cooperation between the two countries in the field of processes of European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

    In Budapest, Mr Lakrori will meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Janosh Martonyi, the State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry, Peter Gottfried, the State Secretary in the Defence Ministry, Istvan Gyarmati and with the deputy secretary of the Committee for Euro- Atlantic Integration of the Hungarian Parliament, Dr. Tibor Szanyi. /pas/xh/

    [07] Two vehicles with smuggled flour blocked in Malesi e Madhe

    KOPLIK, Jan.18 (ata) - By M Malja: Two long vehicles with smuggled flour were blocked Sunday in the district of Malesi e Madhe.

    The event happened on Sunday at 11 p.m. when forces of police of the commissariat of that district stopped in village Vukpalak, 6 km, from Koplik two IFA type vehicles, spokesman of the commissariat told ATA.

    During the control, it came out that the charge of 10 tons of flour was brought illegally through the Lake Shkodra. Police forces blocked the two vehicles and the people who were accompanying the flour, the spokesman explains.

    Since the beginning of this year, this is the second case that police forces of this district block vehicles with smuggled flour. 7 days ago, they blocked 4 vehicles with about 20 tons of flour, illegally brought through Lake Shkodra. /s.sh/xh/

    [08] Smuggled flour and potatoes sequestered

    TIRANE, Jan.18 (ata) - By Urim Bajrami: Forces of order and customs police have sequestered lately 10 tons of flour and 10 tons of potatoes brought in illegally.

    The press office of the Public Order Ministry told ATA on Monday that last Sunday evening, police arrested in Shkoder Bari Ujka, 36, and Rifat Pasha, 32.

    They were detained because they were transporting smuggled flour and potatoes, says the report.

    The smuggled commodities was sequestered and the documents were sent to the Prosecutor's office for further investigation. /pas/xh/

    [09] Albanian President Meidani congratulates Moslem believers on Fiter Bairam

    TIRANE, Jan.19 (ata) - By Enkeleida Riza: The President of Albania Rexhep Meidani accompanied by his wife visited Tuesday the headquarters of Albanian Moslem Community in Tirane on occasion of Fiter Bairam.

    "Prosperity for Albanians wherever they live, in and outside the borders, more peace, more freedom and unity," congratulated President Meidani the Chairman of the Moslem Community Haxhi Hafiz Sabri Koci and all those present, believers, representatives of political parties, of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Tirane, representatives of the Government and the Tirane City-Hall.

    "I wish in these tragic moments that the Albanian people in Kosove are passing, to be all united to the benefit of our future, of our children's future, of peace in the region and for a dignified integration in Europe."

    The Chairman of the Albanian Moslem Community, Haxhi Hafiz Sabri Koci, said that "Bairam of this year must open the doors to prosperity and peace for all our people." /f.n/xh/

    [10] Two dinghies with illegal people on board blocked

    DURRES, Jan. 19 (ata) - By G Kabashi: Last Monday evening two patrol ships of Guardia di Finanza blocked in the Bay of Vlore two dinghies with illegal people on board.

    According to the spokesman of Guardi di Finanza, deployed in the port of Durres, 9 other dinghies could pass the "anti-dinghy fence."

    After signals on the other side of the Adriatic, four of them were blocked in the coast of Brindisi and Taranto with a general number of 196 people on board.

    According to the same source, one dinghy carrying 28 illegal people, has been sequestered. During the control, the dinghy had 90 kg. of marihuana and the man in charge of it was detained.

    Also two cars, which were transporting a part of the illegals in Italy, have also been blocked. /pas/xh/

    [11] State accords fund to construct dike in Shkumbim river

    LIBRAZHD, Jan 19 (ATA) - By H. Balliu: State budget accorded recently a fund worth 4 million leks for a partial repair of the dike over the Shkumbim river which threatened the whole industrial area of the city of Librazhd, Eastern Albania.

    Several enterprises, such as that of wood processing "Libadeco" and the construction firm, have been under continuous threat from Shkumbim.

    Local government officials say that the construction of the dike started in 1990 but was not over though most of the works were completed. During the last eight years the Shkumbim river has destroyed all what was done for the dike.

    The fund worth 4 million leks was an extra fund for 1998. /pas/ak/

    [12] Law against dinghies applied

    DURRES, Jan 19 (ATA) - By G. Kabashi: Five days after the law against dinghies approved by the Albanian parliament was enforced, a dinghy seized by the Italian-Albanian Guardia di Finanza units a day earlier 10 miles west of the Kepi i Lagjit, south of Durres, was confiscated early on Tuesday.

    A spokesman of the mission in Durres said that a dinghy with a man on board and without fuel was blocked on Monday 16.30 p.m. by patrolling boats.

    The dinghy was 8 meters long with two motors of Mariner and Mercuri type of 425 hp travelling some 45 miles per hour.

    The man aboard was Vladimir Bushi, 29, inhabitant of Hoxhare, Fier. This is the first dinghy confiscated after the law was enforced last week. /pas/ak/

    [13] Unidentified persons fire at TV Kukes

    KUKES, Jan 19 (ATA) - By Riza Hoxha: Unidentified persons fired at the building

    of TV Kukes on Monday at 19.30. p.m. breaking the window glasses, police sources said.

    A spokesman of the police station said to ATA that the building was fired from unknown direction and added that there were no reports on casualties.

    An investigation team rushed to the site.

    The private TV of Kukes run by Lufti Mecka started broadcast in June 1997 and its programs are listened in northeastern area

    [14] Kosova reconciles Albanian politics

    TIRANA, Jan 19 (ATA) - By I. Luto: The national issue gathered on Monday evening parliamentary parties which issued a joint statement on Kosova.

    The statement, a sign of common attitude of the Albanian political forces, urged an armed intervention by the international factor as the only and effective therapy for a solution to the Kosova issue.

    This issue gathered for the second time the chief of the Albanian government Pandeli Majko and chief of the largest party of opposition the Democratic party Sali Berisha who shook hands in front of cameras and journalists.

    Kosova seemed to reconcile Albanians with each other. Albanian speaker Skender Gjinushi responding to the questions of journalists called on all not to abuse with theses of a domestic political crisis which did not exist.

    "The crisis is in Kosova and we are gathered here to deal with this and not to destabilize Albania," Gjinushi said.

    Albanian speaker called on political parties in Albania to avoid unnecessary fighting "not only the domestic one but also the mania to show off one's patriotism and nationalism."

    Gjinushi asked the media to follow suit of the statement of party round table. /pas/ak/

    [15] Albanian foreign minister meets French foreign minister

    TIRANA, Jan 19 (ATA) -By A. Haxhiu: Albanian Foreign Minister Paskal Milo, who was on a visit to Strasbourg, will hold talks with French Foreign Minister Huber Vedrine on Wednesday.

    Sources of the Albanian Foreign Ministry said that the talks will take place at the French Foreign Ministry and will focus on the worse situation in Kosova, its impact on the Balkans and Albania-France relations. /lh/ak/
