[01] 4 million ECU by PHARE Program for the modernization of the port of VloreVLORE, Dec.19 (ata) - By Harilla Koci: The port of the city of Vlore is included in a project which envisages the extension, and consequently the increase of the capacity for the processing of ships.The project is funded by PHARE Program and is estimated at 4 million ECU, official sources of the town hall of Vlore said to ATA. According to them, over the coming year, a work valued at 289 million lek will be carried out for the further extension of the quays. The port ensures considerable incomes each year, to the tune of about 21 billion lek which come from the processing of the ships and by the customs house and other activities in that port. The port is also used by the freighters of Otranto-Brindisi-Vlore lines and this if Igumenice-Vlore. /xh/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[02] Albania has a Euro-Atlantic orientation - MiloTIRANE, Dec.20 (ata) - In a meeting held Saturday afternoon between Albanian Foreign Minister, Paskal Milo and the President of the International Organization of North Atlantic Associations, Theodossis Georgiou, a special attention was devoted to the efforts of Albania for its Euro-Atlantic integration in which besides others, the North Atlantic associations are playing their role.The interlocutors underlined that these associations have a broad, pluralistic and apolitical character and role. Minister Milo pointed out that on occasion of the 50th anniversary of NATO in May of the coming year, the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs of Albania, in cooperation with the North Atlantic Association will organize a conference in Tirane, in which the NATO Secretary General, Javier Solana is invited as well. /pas/xh/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[03] Public Order Ministry to give special remuneration for policeTIRANE, Dec.19 (ata) - The Public Order Ministry will give a special remuneration for police within this year.The spokesman of this ministry told ATA that now it is working so that within its possibilities and legal competence, for a special remuneration for the police, which would depend on the level of the realisation of the tasks by each of its members in the field of training and the alert, within this year. With regard to the delay in the payment of the remuneration from the solidarity fund for the policemen, the spokesman explained that it has resulted "from the fact that the taxation structures did not receive in time the necessary amount of money from the fund for November." The Public Order Ministry said that this payment will be made immediately after the whole fund is ensured. /s.s./xh/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[04] Institute of Statistics will "monitor" Albanian family budgetDURRES, Dec.20 (ata) - By Gezim Kabashi: The Albanian family budget is the subject of a poll that the Institute of Statistics is preparing. Funded by the Council of Europe, the opinion poll will analyse everything linked with the incomes and expenditures of the family in the new social- economic conditions of the Albanian society.Elida Prifti, director of the Statistics Office in Durres, said to ATA that the poll will be held in some districts of Albania during the coming March. About 300 families from the villages and the city of Durres, selected on the basis of a a lot system will respond questions by the interviewer and will be observed closely in the all daily expenditures. The pater familias and other family members will note in their notebooks all the family and personal expenses. Such note books will be given for one month also to the children above eight years old, because, as Prifti explained, in many families the little ones spend amounts of money which are considerable for the present family budget. The incomes of the families will include not only the monthly salaries and pensions, but also the economic assistance, despite their origin, and the incomes received by the family members and illegal jobs. /pas/xh/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[05] Hair of Prophet Mohammed found intact in ShkoderSHKODER, Dec.20 (ata) - By M Malja: The Hair of Prophet Mohammed was found undamaged last Saturday in the Museum House of Tabaks, built near the Rozafa Castle in the 17th century.Members of Tabak family say that "in the ruins of the house which was accidentally burnt some days ago, they had found closed in a silver box the Hair of Prophet Mohammed, which was donated some 250 years ago to the predecessors of the Tabak family. Besides, a small part of the books from the library, with a fund of 2000 volumes, this year, could also be recovered. The house of Tabaks has been a characteristic building of Shkoder ancient architecture, it was two-storied with an open veranda, without ceiling, with stone stairs, wooden railings, open crazy path leading to the house. In a special room, named the room of books, there were 2000 volumes in Arabic, Persian and Albanians. /f.n./xh/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[06] Telephone network towards improvement in HasHAS, Dec. 20 (ATA) - By R. Hoxha: Some 3.8 million leks, accorded by the state budget, have enabled the improvement of telephone connection in the district of Has during this year.Out of 29 villages, the telephone connection functions in 25 of them, meanwhile that in 12 villages the telephone connection was realised during 1998, the regional director of Telecom, Ali Braha, told ATA. Actually, all the communes as well as 90% of the villages are regularly connected by telephone. Meanwhile, the specialists are working to set up the prefix which will improve the connection of this district with the international telephone network. /dast/mt/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[07] Durres sea port turned into share-holding companyDURRES, Dec. 20 (ATA) - By S. Gjordeni: The sea port of Durres is turned into a share-holding company and will be run by a supervising council made up of nine members.The director of the port, Leonidha Gjermeni, said that the administration reform that we started since the beginning of this year is coming to the end, and we are working to set up the new structures in accordance with the functioning of the port as a share-holding company. Some 600 workers of loading and unloading have been discharged since two months ago, who were paid at an annual salary, and has already started the reduction of the administration staff. Gjermeni said that new tariffs of working processes are being prepared. They will enter into force in January 1999. Turning of this sea port into a share-holding company means complete changing of the management of this enterprise. /dast/mt/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[08] Some 73 Albanian students receive Oxford diplomaTIRANA, Dec. 20 (ATA) - By Erma Zagorcani: Some 73 Albanian students (three times more than last year) received on Saturday evening the diploma of the Oxford University during a special ceremony organized in the Writers' League.They won this diploma on basis of written examinations that the press center of Oxford organizes in Albania twice a year for the Albanian students. Attending the ceremony was the chief of the Oxford University Center for the Balkans, Petros Papasarandopulos, the Albanian deputy Minister of Education and Science, Mimoza Hafizi, the Executive director of this Center for Albania, Eduard Koruni. During this ceremony it was also presented the Albanian-English dictionary, published by the Printing House of the Oxford press center in Tirana. Its author is the professor of the San Diego University in California, Leonard Dyma. The work to draft this dictionary has started in 1981. It contains 75 000 Albanian words and is a result of the close cooperation of the author with Albanian scholars and linguists. This dictionary is considered as the best Albanian-English dictionary ever published in Albania. /pas/mt/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[09] Works for rehabilitation of Saranda port continueSARANDA, Dec. 20 (ATA) - By Sh. Hajno: The works for the rehabilitation of the sea port of Saranda (South) have started. This was enabled after the delivery of a fund worth 100 000 USD accorded by the Albanian government.Actually, a segment of 50 meters is being dug out in the basement of the main crane which elaborates the goods in the port. The port of Saranda was in a critical situation after last year's turmoil. Meanwhile that the terminal where the goods are elaborated is being resolved, there is no confirmation about the terminal of travellers' ferries. /mt/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[10] Prize for best literature in 1997 awardedTIRANA, Dec. 19 (ATA) - By Ornela Kadaifciu:"The Golden Pen" in the written literature for 1997 was awarded Saturday to the poet from Kosova, Azem Shkreli (posthumous) for the poetic volume "In rain," published by the printing house "Onufri."A day before the first Book Fair "Tirana '98" was over, a ceremony organized by the Ministry of Culture in the grounds of Hotel Tirana, convened publishers, personalities of art and culture, as well as the Minister of Culture Edi Rama. Along with the prize "The Golden Pen," the jury, headed by Aurel Plasari, also awarded the prizes the "Silver Pen," for the best poetry and prose, the translation from the foreign language into Albania and vice- versa, as well as the prize "The First Book." "The Silver Pen" in poetry was given to Sadik Bejkos, and in prose to the author Adem Istrefi. For the best translation in the Albanian language, the prize was awarded to the translator Virgjil Muci for translation of the fiction book "Women" of Charles Buchovski, and the prize for the best translation from Albanian into English language was given to the British translator John Houlston for the translation of the novel "The bridge with three arches" written by Ismail Kadare. The jury also accorded this year the prize "The First Book," which was given to the young poet Ledia Dushi. The prize "The Silver Pen" for the best essay was not awarded to any author. /pas/mt/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[11] Turkish technical assistance for Albanian Foreign MinistryTIRANE, Dec.19 (ata) - By I.Luto: The Turkish Government delivered today a technical assistance to the Foreign Ministry of Albania, namely a powerful generator which will meet the needs of the Ministry for electricity in case of electric failure.Present in the ceremony for the generator was also the Foreign Minister of Albania, Paskal Milo and the Ambassador of the Turkish Republic in Tirane, Ahmet Refat Okcun. Minister Milo thanked in the name of the Albanian Government the friendly Turkish Government for the direct contribution that it has given and is giving to Albania in this difficult period for this country.
