  • [01] Eleven Albanians killed in two villages of Rahovec

    PRISHTINE, Sept. 6 (ata) - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reports: At least 11 Albanians have been killed and scores of others wounded last Sunday by Serb forces in the past attack in villages Dejne and Polluzhe of Rahovec, sources of the Council of Defence of Human Rights in Kosove report.

    Many of the wounded are in a grave situation and without any medical assistance, say the reports. /das/xh/

    [02] Grave situation in villages of Dushkaje and Lugu i Baranit

    PRISHTINE, Sept. 7 (ata) - During the past two days, the villages of Dushkaje and Lugu i Baranit, namely Cermjan, Kralan, Gerdoc, Dellove, Ceskova and Nepola have been burnt and destroyed, whereas yesterday Jabllanica was bombed, causing many wounded but with no reports so far, Kosove Information Centre reports.

    A night before, about 500 Albanians and another group of 60 people were held near village Kralan, and police killed one of them. The encircled Albanians have managed to escape and had found shelter in the villages in Lugu i Baranit. Sources from the field, which KIC refers to, say that a considerable number of Albanians continue to be kept in the catholic church of Glloxhan, while no reports are available for a number of villagers of Nepole who were going to the mountains. /das/xh/

    [03] Second auction for former pyramid scheme assets -3.37 million lek accumulated for creditors-

    TIRANE, Sept.7 (ata) - By Dorian Koca: The selling of the assets of the former pyramid investment schemes is continuing in Albania. The money accumulated from these sales, according to a law approved by the parliament, will be distributed to the creditors.

    Today ended the second auction for the assets of the former loan- taking firms audited by Deloitte & Touche.

    At the end of the second auction, seven of 13 winners were former creditors.

    The amount gathered for the creditors from these sales is 3.37 million lek. At the end of the two auctions, the total sum was as high as 48.37 million lek.

    The Auction Centre reports that today two other catalogues will be published, number 10 and 11, which advertise real estates, machinery and equipment for production, refrigerators, etc.

    Another catalogue will be published the next Monday with real estates in the districts. In order to enable the greatest possible participation in the auction, Deloitte & Touche has decided that the time for the advertisement of the new catalogues be three weeks. /xh/

    [04] 310 people employed in public works projects in Diber

    PESHKOPI, Sept.7 (ata) - By H Ruspi: The implementation of projects in public works is reducing the number of the unemployed in the district of Diber.

    Islam Tafa, chief of the budget branch in the district, told ATA that there are ten projects mostly for the rehabilitation of rural roads, financed with 14.8 million lek from the state budget. The number of the people employed in the realisation of these projects amounts to 310 workers in 2-3 months, he added.

    The roads in the communes Maqellare, Melan and Kastriot, are aloready rehabilitated and this work is underway also in Fushe-Cidhen. Projects on public works will be soon applied also in the communes Luzni, Arras, etc.

    According to Tafa, the number of the projects will increase, consequently, the number of the seasonal workers will also be higher. The people employed in such works will be mostly those who receive economic assistance. /xh/

    [05] Pedagogical school reopens in Peshkopi

    PESHKOPI, Sept. 7 (ATA) - H Ruspi: By a decision of the Albanian Ministry of Education and Science, the pedagogical school in Peshkopi (north-east of Albania) will reopen this academic year.

    "A considerable number of teachers from northeastern zone have moved to low land zones while others have emigrated, thus increasing the number of the teachers without the respective education," told ATA the director of education in the district of Diber, Xhevair Hoxha.

    Nearly 30 per cent of the teachers in this academic year in the district of Diber do not have the necessary education for the subjects they teach. Therefore, the pedagogical school must have been reopened earlier, "because the new contingent of teachers will graduate after four years."

    The right to study in the pedagogical school will be given to pupils from 10 districts of the northern zone of Albania, which, like Diber, need teachers with the appropriate education. /das/xh/

    [06] River Gjader covers with water three villages

    TIRANE, Sept.7 (ata) - The heavy rain falls last Saturday evening in the district of Shkoder and northern Albania rose the level of River Gjader and its water inundated some villages in the Vau i Dejes area.

    The spokesman of Public Order Ministry told ATA that as a result of the heavy rain, the level of Gjader rose 1 meter covering 10 houses in Vau i Dejes, 15 in Melvig and 10 houses in village Hajmel. In addition, 350 sown hectares have also been covered by water. There are no reports of damages in people and livestock.

    Since Sunday, the level of Gjader is about 30-40 cm lower. /das/xh/

    [07] Parliament passes government program on Kosova refugees

    TIRANA, Sept 6 (ATA) -By Ylli Pata: Albanian parliament approved on Monday a government program on the accommodation of refugees from Kosova and creation of a commission to supervise its implementation.

    Present at this special parliamentary session were deputy prime minister and minister of the local government Bashkim Fino, minister of Public Order Perikli Teta, Foreign minister Paskal Milo, minister of Finance Arben Malaj, minister of Public Economy Ylli Bufi, minister of Social Affairs Anastas Angjeli,minister of Agriculture and Food Lufter Xhuveli, minister of Education and Science Et'hem Ruka and Minister of Health Leonard Solis who voiced their views on the government program.

    The 12-point program read by the deputy premier Fino said that the government would adopt a series of measures to meet the needs of refugees from Kosova, to register them, provide aid and assistance for the local population in Tropoja and other areas where refugees have been settled and are expected to settle.

    Some 15 thousand refugees from Kosova (where 90 percent of the population are Albanians) mostly women and children have settled in Tropoja district, north of Albania, to escape Serb genocide.

    It also defined in details the removal of part of the refugees, or some five thousand people, from the Kukes prefecture to that of Diber and Shkodra. The removal will be done within September. /mima/ak/

    TIRANA, Sept 7 (ATA) - By D. Koça: The dollar recorded a slight decrease against the national currency lek early on Monday at the Savings Bank as compared to the exchange rate recorded last Friday. In the informal market, a dollar cost 150.2 leks early on Monday.

    [09] State secretary visits Greece to boost cooperation

    TIRANA, Sept 7 (ATA) - By I. Luto: Secretary of State for European Integration Ilir Meta left on Monday for a two-day visit to Greece invited by his Greek counterpart Georges Papandreu, press and information office at the Albanian Foreign Ministry said to ATA.

    The same source said that the Albanian delegation and the Greek side are expected to discuss promotion of Albania-Greece bilateral cooperation. /mima/ak/

    [10] Arrest of six former officials motivated - prosecutor

    TIRANA, Sept (ATA)-By Th. Thanasi, The prosecutors of the case against former senior officials accused of "crimes against humanity", said on Monday that the arrest of the defendants has been motivated and that the time of assessing the arrest order is not in violation of the procedures.

    "The arrest of six defendants has been motivated. In this arrest the prosecutor's office considered the risk that the defendants might flee Albania," Aleksander Goga, chief military prosecutor in Tirana told ATA.

    According to Goga the August 22 arrest order included 10 persons, but six were arrested as the rest are not in Albania.

    Meanwhile Goga, responding to the defence lawyers' claim that the prosecutor's office has not respected the legal procedures on the time of assessing the arrest order says that "the prosecutor's office acted within 24 hours, beginning from the moment the police officially informed it of the arrest of the six defendants".

    Safet Zhulali, former Defence Minister, Halit Shamata, former Interior Minister, Blerim Cela, former head of State Control, Sokol Mulosmani, former colonel, Bujar Rama, former chairman of the National Information Service (SHIK), and Kreshnik Lusha, former lieutenant-colonel, were arrested by order of the military prosecutor's office on August 22 '98.

    They are charged with "crimes against humanity" during the Spring '97 unrest, in which some 2 000 people lost their lives.

    The Tirana district court in Tirana after assessing the custody for the six defendants decided on August 24 "15 days of detention for Kreshnik Lushaj and unlimited detention for the next five. /mima/lm/

    [11] Exhibition "Message of peace from Albania" inaugurated in Strasbourg

    TIRANA, Sept 7 (ATA)-By K. Shehu, Exhibition "Message of peace from Albania" was inaugurated on Monday at the Palace of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, on the first anniversary of death of Mother Teresa, benefactor of Albanian origin, Nobel Peace laureate.

    Twenty seven works of Albanian painters, Ibrahim Kodra (People's painter), Kel Kelmendi, and Skender Kamberi (People's painter), which were devoted to the figure of Mother Teresa, were displayed in this exhibition.

    Attending the inauguration of the exhibition were senior authorities of the Council of Europe, representatives of the Albanian Foreign ministry and many other guests.

    The exhibition which will stay open until September 11 will later be held in Paris under the auspices of the Albanian embassy to France. /mima/lm/

    [12] Health ministry adopts measures to help Kosova refugees

    TIRANA, Sept 7 (ATA) - By R. Xhuvani: Albanian Health Ministry in cooperation with international bodies specialised in drafting working programs to examine people coming from Kosova for contagious diseases and provide free of charge health assistance to children and elderly people, a spokesman of the ministry said to ATA on Monday.

    The ministry has worked out a list of specialists in surgery and intensive care unit who are going to work during winter in health centers in Tropoja.

    Some 15 thousand refugees from Kosova, mostly women and children, fleeing Serb genocide are being settled in northern Albania, particularly in Tropoja district.

    The Albanian parliament approved on Monday a government program on a series of measures for people coming from Kosova, including their removal to other parts of Albania.

    "Until September, the Health Ministry will provide two ambulances for emergency and will cover problems of hygiene-sanitary and epidemic character for displaced people," the spokesman said. /mima/ak/

    [13] Vatican and Albanian embassy in Rome commemorate anniversary of death of Mother Teresa

    TIRANA, Sept 7 (ATA)-By I. Luto, The Albanian embassy in Rome along with cultural club "Scanderbeg", organised a cultural party on September 4 in commemoration of Mother Teresa, Albanian benefactor of world fame, the Foreign Ministry press department told ATA.

    A commemorative Mass was said on the first anniversary of death of Mother Teresa at the Cathedral of St Pietro in Vatican on September 5 in which took part 7000 people, also including religion and state figures.

    The ceremony was opened with a speech by Pope John Paul II who said that Mother Teresa should not be commemorated only in words, "but we should ask the heads of states to resolutely and honestly act on the road of disarmament, to destine the necessary resources for vast objectives of civilisation, to fight in unison against hunger and illness." /mima/lm/

    [14] Unlimited house arrest for Kreshnik Lusha

    TIRANA, Sept 7 (ATA)-By U. Bajrami, The Tirana court on Monday ruled house arrest order for former Colonel Kreshnik Lusha, who along with former senior officials, is accused by the Military prosecutor's office of "crimes against humanity".

    "I do not agree with the ruling. However, this shows that the court has reconsidered its decision. It is giving the first signs of its independence by dissociating me from the accusation of crimes against humanity," Lusha told ATA after leaving the court room.

    "My client makes an exception from the other five because he has simply been a subordinate and has executed the orders of his superior, more over in an emergency situation", Baftjar Rusi, defence lawyer of Lusha told ATA.

    Six former senior officials of the Democratic party government (DP opposition): Safet Zhulali, former Defence Minister, Halit Shamata, former Interior Minister, Blerim Cela, former head of State Control, Sokol Mulosmani, former Colonel, Bujar Rama, former chairman of the National Information Service (SHIK), and Kreshnik Lusha, former Lieutenant-Colonel, were arrested by order of the military prosecutor's office on August 22 '98.

    They are charged with "crimes against humanity" during the Spring '97 unrest, in which some 2 000 people lost their lives.
