    TIRANE, June 7 (ata) - The Albanian Parliament Speaker, Skender Gjinushi and the Defence Minister Luan Hajdaraga had a meeting on Saturday with soldiers and officers of the military units of Mat and Diber, spokesman of the People's Assembly reports.

    Gjinushi and Hajdaraga said in the meeting they wanted to see closely the situation of the effectives there. The tragic events in Kosove, said Gjinushi, the killings and ethnic cleansing realised by the war machine of Milosevic against the innocent population in Kosove, demand an intensive training of the military forces and high alert.

    Praising the work of the officers and soldiers of the unit of Burrel for the elimination of the grave consequences of the past year, Gjinushi stressed that the establishment of normality in the military activity is today a great act of patriotism. "Our army, he said, despite the situation it passed, has the continuous support of NATO and U.S., and it is ever more taking the features of a modern army, ready to face any situation.

    According to the spokesman of the People's Assembly, highlighting the preventive measures adopted for the situation in northern Albania, in the meeting in the Prefecture of Diber, Gjinushi said that the Parliament and the Albanian Government are totally committed to support the Albanian brothers who have fled their land to escape Serb repression. /a.ke/xh/

    [02] More than 80 per cent of Albanians' homes ruined in Decan

    PRISHTINE, June 6 (ata) - An inhabitant of Carrabreg i Ulet of the commune of Decan, who managed to flee his village, told the Information Centre of Kosove that Serbian forces have killed many innocent people recently and set on fire dwelling places of Albanians. He said that at the beginning the Serbian forces hit Albanians' homes with grenades, then they enter with tanks and infantry and loot everything from there. Finally they set the homes ablaze.

    Such a scenario is used in Decan where 80 per cent of the homes are ruined. /pas/xh/

    [03] Bombing and air raids on villages of Decan

    PRISHTINE, June 6 (ata) - Serb army and police continued to hit today with grenades some villages of the commune of Decan (Western Kosove, near the border with Albania,) the Information Centre of Kosove reports.

    Fatmir Berisha, teacher from Strelloi, declared to the Information Centre of Kosova that the Serbian army is hitting with artillery pieces the villages Gramacel, Glogjan, Isniq, Prejlep. Over 30 000 inhabitants are thought to have come in these villages from other villages of this commune and Peja commune.

    The same source reports that Serbs are using fighters in their raids.

    Fatmir Berisha conveyed the call of the inhabitants of these villages to ensure a corridor leadingto Gjakove or Albania in order to escape Serb massacres. /pas/xh/

    [04] Citizens of Tirane back up resistance of Kosova people

    TIRANE, June 6 (ata) - By A Haxhiu: Thousands of Tirana people protested Saturday in Scanderbeg Square against the violence and terror that Milosevic is exerting on the people of Kosova, in a demonstration of protest held by Albanian right wing parties.

    "It is high time, before it is too late, that the Albanian nation act, and our national question finds a just and lasting settlement," said that chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha.

    Also leaders of other rightist parties stressed the need of a greater support from Albania for the resistance of Kosova.

    The speakers in the protest accused the Albanian government as incapable to be energetically committed to the defence of the national interests and demanded its withdrawal.

    The government coalition parties were not taking part in the gathering of protest.

    On March this year, a big rally was held in the same square in support of the people of Kosove, under the motto "One nation - one attitude" in which representatives of all Albanian political forces and patriotic associations took part. /a.ke/xh/

    [05] Elbasan ready to welcome refugees from Kosova

    ELBASAN, june 6 (ata) - By P Zekthi: The Council of the tate of emergency in the district of Elbasan (Central Albania) which convened on Saturday, ordered that two dormitories of the secondary schools of that city be ready for the Kosovars who have reached Northeastern Albania in case they will be evacuated. The council asked the department of public health in the district to have ready the medical staff if need be.

    The food articles, medicaments and clothes for the Kosovars are being accumulated in the premises of the State Reserves warehouses of the city, while the aid in cash is being accumulated in the a special bank account in the savings bank. Only yesterday, the local TV station Dardania gathered about 7 million lek, mainly donated by the chamber of commerce and businessmen in Elbasan.

    According to official sources, so far, the number of the refugees who have come from Kosova to Northern Albania is over 10 000 people. /a.ke/pas/xh/

    [06] 5-6 million USD from Soros to protect Albanian schools from fire

    TIRANE, June 7 (ata) - By P Shuteriqi: Soros Foundation has earmarked a fund of 5-6 million USD through its "Albania's Educational Development" Project (AEDP) for the creation of special groups to protect schools from fire.

    The strategy of the project includes establishment of special places for the protection from fire of all the schools in Albania.

    The Albanian Ministry of Education and Science, in cooperation with educational department, the regiment of civil defence of the district of Kavaje and the AEDP project held a demonstration some days ago in Kavaje for the cooperation with the civil defence against fire. Attending it were representatives of the districts' educational departments, local government structures and the Ministry of defence, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Ministry of Economy, that of Education and Science and some other institutions. /pas/xh/

    [07] Soccer team Apolonia of Fier wins Albania's Cup in football

    TIRANE, June 7 (ata) - By E Jonuzi: Apolonia soccer team of Fier wins the Cup of Albania for 1997-1998 for the first time in the history of Albania football.

    In the final match played last Saturday in the Qemal Stafa national stadium in Tirane, Apolonia won versus Lushnja team with the score 1-0. The goal for Apolonia was scored by Romeo Haxhiraj in the 70th minute. /a.ke/pas/

    [08] Second national championship in Tae-Kwon-Do (adults) ends

    TIRANE, June 7 (ata) - By E Jonuzi: The second national championship of Tae-Kwon-Do for adults ended last Saturday in the Partizani sport club in Tirane. Participating in it were the teams of Partizani, Tirane, the private club "Albanet", Laci, the private team of Durres and Partizani 2.

    At the end of the championship, the team of Partizani with coach the South Korean Kim Young Ki, took the first place with 24 points, followed by the team Albanet with 21 points.

    The first championship of Tae-Kwon-Do was held in 1996, while in 1997 the championship was not held because of the unrest in Albania. /a.ke/pas/xh/

    [09] War damages in Kosove estimated at over 1 billion DM

    PRISHTINE, June 7 (ata) - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reports: The material and economic damage during the past three months in Kosove as a result of the military operations of the Serb forces are estimated at over 1 billion DM.

    This is an incomplete balance published in Prishtine yesterday based on the information from the communes of Skenderaj, Gllogoc, Decan, Gjakove, Kline, Peje and Rahovec (Central and western Kosova.)

    Around 4.076 houses and other buildings with an area of over 815 thousand square meters have been totally burnt, ruined or damaged. Over 32 600 inhabitants have remained homeless while the number of those who have been obliged to leave their homes to escape Serb raids and bombing is over 130 000. A part of these people have taken shelter in calmer zones of Kosove, over 12000 are now in Albania and thousands of others have fled to Montenegro. /pa.ta/pas/xh/

    [10] Nearly 13 000 refugees from Kosove in Tropoje

    BAJRAM CURRI, June 7 (ata) - By Riza Hoxha: The influx of Kosova refugees in Tropoje continued also on Sunday.

    During Saturday and Sunday, about 600 people have arrived, mainly women, children and elderly people. The young people who accompany them return back to defend their homes and areas in Kosove.

    Actually, the commune of Tropoje, about 10 km from the border, continues to be packed with people. It is the first station from where the refugees are distributed to other communes of the district.

    The chairman of the district council, Xhevedet Hoxha told ATA that the number of the refugees is about 13 000, while only 8 000 of them are registered. They have been distributed, besides the commune of Tropoje and the town of Bajram Curri, in the communes of Margegaj, Bujan and Llugaj of the district of Tropoje.

    In the past two days, a great number of the refugees from Kosova have left for other zones of Central and Southern Albania where they have relatives. /a.ke/pas/xh/

    [11] Aid distributed in Tropoje district

    BAJRAM CURRI, June 7 (ata) - By Riza Hoxha: During last Saturday and Sunday the distribution of aid in food article continued in the communes of Tropoje, Bujan, Margegaj and Llugaj, as well in the municipality of Bajram Curri, Northern Albania.

    The emergency staff has prepared lists for all the families which have sheltered refugees from Kosova. The food items distributed are mainly flour, sugar, rice and cooking oil.

    Considerable aid has been sent by the Albanian Government, the International Red Cross and Albanian Red Cross, the Tirane town-hall, etc.

    According to Isa Kuliqi, secretary of Tropoje district council, the aid is sufficient for 20 days.

    The market in Bajram Curri has been regularly supplied with mass consumer goods. /a.ke/pas/xh/

    [12] Over 760 refugees from Kosove arrive in Plave of Montenegro

    PRISHTINE, June 7 (ata) - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reports: Over 760 refugees mainly women, children and elderly people from the outskirts of Decan, Peje and Gjakove have arrived in the commune of Plave, Montenegro, sources of the Emergency Council in Plave report.

    The Kosovars expelled from their hearths have walked for three days and nights, through mountains in order to reach Plave. Among them are many sick people, six of them were immediately hospitalized for their grave medical state caused by the violence used against them in a Serb checkpoint.

    The citizens of the commune of Plave are maximally preoccupied to welcome and shelter the refugees from Kosova, whose influx is continuing. /pa.ta/pas/xh/
