  • [01] ALBANIAN PRIME MINISTER TAKES PART IN NORTH ATLANTIC PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY IN BUCHAREST

    TIRANE, OCT.11 (ATA) - Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano was invited Monday in Bucharest to address the session of the North Atlantic Parliamentary Assembly, in which Albania is a member.

    During the several hour visit in Bucharest, PM Nano held a number of bilateral and multilateral activities in the context of the Euro-Atlantic contacts. Mr Nano also had meetings with senior leaders of Romania.

    According to the spokesman of the Prime Minister, during the visit Mr Nano also met and had talks with the Prime Minister of Romania, Ciorbea. They discussed the latest developments in the two countries, the possibilities of cooperation and the materialization of the agreements signed between them.

    In the headquarters of the Parliament of Romania in which the 43d Session of the North Atlantic Assembly was held, the Albanian PM also met with the U.S. Senator, Ross, with the chairman of the Civilian Affairs Committee, Gian Giacomo Migone and with the chairman of the North Atlantic Assembly, Simon Lunn.

    Nano assured them of the Euro-Atlantic direction of the his cabinet. Later on Mr Nano addressed the Civilian Affairs Committee.

    PM Nano had a working meeting with the chairman of the Senate of Romania, Petre Roman. The two parties in the meeting expressed their readiness to consolidate and promote the good relations between Albania and Romania. ake/kled/xh/sh/

    [02] ALBANIA READY TO SUPPORT REGIONAL INITIATIVE FOR IMPROVEMENT OF CLIMATE IN THE BALKANS

    TIRANE, OCT.12 (ATA) - By Eva Allushi: In the context of the spirit of international partnership, Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano said last Saturday following a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the North Atlantic in Bucharest, where he took part, that "Albania is ready to join regional and international initiatives."

    "The Balkans should not remain a region of historic conflict," stressed Mr Nano.

    The present with the real conflicts and the future of the Balkans were the topics of the talks that Albanian Prime Minister had with senior officials of the world policy participating in the event.

    Prime Minister Nano described the Romanian capital "as a motivating centre to talk on the Euro-Atlantic future of the Balkans for the very fact of the stable civilized relations existing between Romanian-Hungarian communities in the Romanian territory." He considered that fact an example for the establishment of civilian relations in Southern Balkans between different ethnic communities.

    "The Balkans must open towards Europe through bilateral and multilateral cooperation," said Nano.

    The steps taken by the Government and the new visions in the Albanian foreign policy with regard to establishing of new bridges of communication and the solution of the problems in the Balkans and broader have been considered as "very positive" by the international opinion and important organizations like the EU.ake/xh/sh/

    [03] ALBANIA NEEDS MESSAGES OF PEACE AND UNDERSTANDING AND THIS CAN BE REALISED THROUGH SPORT

    TIRANE, OCT.12 (ATA) - By A Keko: "Selection of Albania to host the European Wrestling Championship for juniors next summer, among many candidacies, was made for the reason that you country needs messages of peace and understanding, and this can be realised very well through sport," declared FILA Secretary General, Michel Dussot following many meetings on Friday and Saturday in Tirane. He also visited the palace of sports "Asllan Rusi" and some hotels in the capital.

    The FILA high official met with deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Kreshnik Tartari, the Mayor of Tirane, Albert Brojka and others.

    Last year's Balkan Wrestling Championship was held in Tirane. kled/xh/sh/

    [04] GREEK POLICEMAN UNDER CHARGES OF KILLING AN ALBANIAN EMIGRANT

    ATHENS, OCT.11 (ATA) - By Robert Goro: The prosecutor's office of Salonica decided to prosecute a local policeman under the charge of "killing for inadvertence" an Albanian emigrant, whose identity is not yet declared.

    The Greek policeman, Jorgos Spanidis was not in service on Friday when at 8.15 a.m. he began chasing an emigrant who had fled from the police station where he was sent for lack of regular papers for his stay in Greece.

    According to the policeman, he had caught the emigrant but the latter did not stop and gripped the policeman who had his weapon in his arm. In a moment, the pistol fired itself and as a result the Albanian emigrant was gravely wounded in the head and died after some minutes. While running to catch the emigrant, the policeman had fired his pistol into the air in a warning.

    Two parliamentary parties, the Communist and the Coalition of the Left and Progress, through public declarations have denounced the incident and considered it a manifestation of racism towards emigrants on the part of police, and asked maximal punishment for the Greek policeman. ake/xh/sh/

    [05] ALBANIAN VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS OF ERZEN BEAT MOLDAVIAN TEAM HIDROMAZH

    DURRES, OCT 11 (ATA) - By G Kabashi: The Albanian champion volleyball team, Erzeni of Shijak (men) won versus Moldavian team Hidromazh Saturday in the eliminatory match.

    In less than one and half hours, the Shijak team beat the Moldavian team with the score 3-0 (15-13, 16-14 and 15-12.) ake/pas/xh/sh/

    TIRANE, OCT.12 (ATA) - "Former DP deputy Arben Mece launches suspicions on Berisha's past," writes Zeri i Popullit under the title "Berisha: Spy of Sigurimi and Eastern secret agencies?!" "Former Prime Minister Meksi had warned: In the lead of DP there are spies of foreign agencies," writes the paper.

    "Albania marches positively towards the future," writes the paper in its second page with regard to the participation of President Meidani in the jubilee meeting of the Council of Europe. The paper covers the participation of the Albanian Prime Minister in the meeting of the Annual Session of the the North Atlantic Assembly under the title "Relations with NATO, a priority in the foreign policy of the new government."

    "CE: Investigation for Nano government," writes Rilindja Demokratike." "Foreign analysts: Developments in Albania, a coordinated reaction between political groups of the left extreme and mafia groups towards the state," writes the paper. "Albania again under strict judgement of Strasbourg," writes the paper in its editorial entitled "Meidani in the trial of Strasbourg."

    The paper writes of the DP meeting of activists for Tirane under the title "Sections, infrastructure of the DP protests."

    "Nano prepares the catastrophe of his governing," writes the newspaper in its third page.

    "The Centre Right in defence of creditors," writes the paper about the news conference of the parliamentary grouping "The Centre Right," under the title "Nano! Return the money or leave the government."

    "Alimucaj demands resignation," is an article published in Republika under the headline "New quotas in the battle for the lost savings. Nano wins time regarding VEFA." "More than killings and theft, Albania is at stake from the 'complex of Jupiter' that the two big parties of former communists are using to come to power," writes an editorial of the newspaper with the title "The complex of Jupiter in the Albanian policy."

    "Berisha: Put factions out of your minds," writes the paper in its third page with regard to the meeting of the Tirane DP branch.

    Koha Jone carries an open letter of the SP deputy, Servet Pellumbi, to the SP General Leading Committee under the title "Reforms of Nano may cause splits in SP." In this regard, the paper also writes in the editorial entitled "We are the left."

    "One of members of the 'Movement for Reformation' Arben Mece, after the activists' meeting of Tirane accused Berisha of being the main candidate for the post of the DP party chairman as collaborator of the defunct state security," writes the paper in its third page.

    "The appointment of the government in July this year, along with the hope for the restoration of the state authority led to the revaluation of the local currency with 30 lek as compared to the US dollar, giving the first positive signal for the ruined Albanian economy," writes the newspaper under the title "Financial abyss."

    "Explosives on the streets, cities in danger," is another article of the paper.

    "More shameful than manipulation of declarations by senior European officials is the effort to present the two-year relations of Albania with CE in the negative sense, at a time when the country's membership in that institution was realised only two years ago when Albania was led by Berisha, " writes an editorial in newspaper Albania.

    "U.S. Congress criticizes the state of human rights in Albania," writes the paper under the title "USA: Nano is violating all rules."

    "VEFA: Government does not allow us to distribute the credits" is another article in the newspaper. Under the headline "Socialists are following a policy of clans with the administration," the paper carries the article "Arben Imami (Minister of Institutional reform and Relations with the Parliament) resigns." "Prime Minister Nano has not accepted his resignation. Further steps of Imami not declared," writes the paper.

    "Albanian-Serbian meeting on the question of education fails," writes Rilindja. "Numerous reactions to the unsuccessful Albanian-Serbian negotiations," it stresses. Under the title "Albania is going towards democracy and internal security," the newspaper makes coverage of the meeting in Strasbourg between the Italian Prime Minister, Romano Prodi and Albanian President Rexhep Meidani.

    "The Parliament Speaker accuses former president: The culprit for the pyramid investment schemes. He found corrupted friends in Europe," writes newspaper Dita. "Government in face of Vefa, Supreme Court to decide tomorrow," writes this paper in its fifth page. "Trade Unions demand to talk with Nano" is another article in the newspaper.

    "Vefa to face judges this week," writes Gazeta Shqiptare. "Alimucaj reacts again: Minister Malja has urged the Bank to freeze my accounts," writes the newspaper. "Otranto threatens to be repeated, 9 people saved in the last moment," writes the same paper. kled/xh/

    [07] ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN TV TEUTA, DURRES, STOLEN

    DURRES, OCTOBER 12 (ATA) - By G Kabashi: Sources of the Durres police department told ATA today that the TV Teuta headquarters, situated near the ancient amphitheater of the city, was looted completely during last night.

    "Professional TV cameras, a fax-telephone and some other equipment estimated at 100 thousand dollars, were missing on Sunday morning when we came for the morning programs," said one of the TV Teuta staff members.

    TV Teuta started its programs six months ago and its signal was also present in the TV sets of the people in Albanian capital, Tirane. ssh/kled/xh/sh/

    [08] THREE CHILDREN KILLED BY EXPLOSIVE DEVICE IN VALIAS

    TIRANE, OCT 12 (ATA) - Three children were killed on Saturday noon in Valias when a bomb went off, Tirane Police department reports.

    Two brothers, Klodian Hysen Seferi, 8, and Arben Seferi 7, and their cousin, Roland Bajram Seferi, 8, while grazing their livestock found the dangerous bomb and started to play with it. As they were moving parts of the device, the fatal blast occurred. kled/xh/sh/

    [09] A WANTED PERSON FROM BERAT CAUGHT IN KORCE

    KORCE, OCT.12 (ATA) - By B Fejzullaj: A very wanted person police in Berat district was detained Sunday in a quarter of Korce. Vasfi Isufi, nicknamed "Totoçi" was caught by criminal police forces in a city quarter family, district police forces report.

    Police also blocked his Benz which Isufi had stolen in Berat with the aim of passing the border, the same sources said.

    Totoçi is now charged with killing and lotting through violence, penal acts which he has committed in the district of Berat during the unrest of this year. ssh/kled/xh/sh/

    [10] ALBANIA'S NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM DEFEATED BY GERMAN TEAM

    TIRANE, OCT.12 (ATA) - By A Keko: The Albanian national football team closed its participation in group 9 eliminatory matches for the World Cup "France '98" with a the score 4-3 (0-0) for the German team in the match in Hanover last Saturday. The goal which registered the victory for the Germans was that kicked in the 92nd minute.

    During the match which was attended by about 45 000 spectators, the Albanian squad directed by Astrit Hafizi and his assistant Faruk Sejdini held in tension the German team for 90 minutes.

    With an almost equal match in the first half, the Albanian team showed a satisfactory technical-tactical level before the German public, who even applauded it along with the support by hundreds of Albanians present in the stadium with national flags waving in their hands. kled/xh/sh/
