  • [01] ALBANIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH HOLDS MASSES TO HONOUR MOTHER TERESA

    TIRANA, SEPT 8, (ATA) - By R. Floqi: The Albanian Catholic Church said on Monday that "masses of lights" will be said in all Catholic churches all over Albania to honour Mother Teresa.

    Albania's Archbishops Conference will be represented by Monseigneur Rrok Mirdita, head of the conference and Archbishop of Durres and Tirana Diocese, in the mourning ceremony in Calcutta.

    The mourning ceremony in Albania will be held on Saturday at 18.00 p.m. in the Catholic Church in Tirana and will be led by Apostolic Nuncio Monseigneur Giovani Bulaitis.

    There are seven missions of Mother Teresa in Albania.

    The Albanian government said on Saturday that Mother Teresa should be buried in Albania because it is her birthplace.

    September 11, 12, 13 will be mourning days in Albania and the national flag will fly at half mast in all institutions from September 6 to 13. kled/ak/Z

    [02] POLICE DETAIN MAN FALSIFYING CHASSIS' NUMBERS

    TIRANA, SEPT. 8 (ATA) By Eva Allushi: Police detained on Sunday Besim Luan Karaj because he has falsified numbers of the chassis.

    Karaj, 44, inhabitant of Tirana and owner of a car repair shop, was arrested on flagrant offence by the police on duty when he was trying to falsify the number of the chassis of a Benz car with Durres number plate.

    Police checked the shop and seized some private and state number plates, vehicles' documentation and other materials. ak/Z

    [03] WEAPONS' COLLECTION CONTINUES IN ALBANIA TO AVOID INCIDENTS

    TIRANA, SEPT. 8 (ATA) - By S. Sharrexhi: The collection of weapons is one of the major conditions to avoid possible incidents even in the district of Tirana, chief of the police Directorate, Colonel Pashk Tusha said to ATA.

    245 heavy and light machine guns, 1 380 automatic rifles, 3 032 rifles, 100 pistols, 474 430 rounds of ammunition, 3 289 hand grenades, 117 kg TNT, a number of anti tank and mortar missiles have been collected by the four commissariats in Tirana from August 21 to September 5.

    In Tepelena, a district in the south of Albania, the police in cooperation with structures of local government, have collected some 1 000 weapons of various kinds and over five hundred thousand rounds of ammunition of different calibres.

    Sources for the commission in charge of collecting ammunition said that 930 out of the total are automatic rifles and the rest are light and heavy machine guns. Some 500 kg TNT and 120 grenades have also been collected. ake/jz/ak/

    [04] PRODUCTION OF CIGARETTES IN ALBANIA RISKED BY SMUGGLING - Producers demand protection by the state -

    DURRES, SEPT 8 (ATA) - By S Gjordeni: The production of cigarettes in Albania is facing difficulties due to the unfair competition of smuggling cigarettes and the foreign ones.

    The producers of cigarettes appeal for a better protection by the state for the domestic production.

    The director of the factory of cigarettes in Durres, Tomor Kadiu, said that the factory totally import the raw material, and all the other materials for the production of cigarettes.

    Another solution for the protection by the state of the domestic production, according to the studies made by the directorate of the cigarette factory, is also the increase of production of tobaccos in Albania.

    In 1990, the village produced 20 000 ton of tobacco, which completed the needs of the factory, while today are produced only 5 000 ton.

    The factory of cigarettes in Durres has continued its work normally over the nine months of this year. The average salary of 900 workers in this factory is 10 400 leks per month. /a.ke/kled/mt/sh/

    [05] FOUR FIFTH OF NEEDS FOR CEMENT IN ALBANIA IMPORTED

    TIRANA, SEPT 8 (ATA) - By G Malo: Albania produces some 200 000 ton of cement per year, which is one fifth of the needs of Albania, while the other part is imported.

    The production of cement is centered in Fushe Kruje, Elbasan and Vlore. This industry is among the fewest which survived during the last 6-7 years.

    It is also increased the import of cement, meanwhile that before '90 Albania exported 100 000 tons per year.

    According to ANSA, Albania consumes 10.6 per cent of the Italian exports of cement, with an increase of 64.7 per cent in 1996, compared with a year ago.

    In the Albanian factories now it is produced only cement 400. In the past, the same industry managed to produce 10 kinds of cement, the specialist in the Institute of Study for the Construction Technology, As. Prof Andon Pecani, told ATA.

    According to Pecani, studies have been made to construct a modern factory in Orikum, Vlore (where the raw material is near.)

    The industry of production of cement in Albania originates in 1928, year when the first factory in Shkoder started its production with German technology./kled/mt/sh/

    [06] ALBANIAN PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION FOR WORKING VISIT IN GREECE

    TIRANA, SEPT 8 (ATA) - By Kledi Shegani: An Albanian parliamentary delegation, headed by the Chairman of the People's Assembly, Skender Gjinushi, left Sunday for a working visit in Greece, invited by the Greek Speaker, Apostolis Kaklamanis.

    Sources from the Foreign Department of Albania's Parliament report that the Albanian Speaker, during the two-day-visit in Greece, is expected to hold meetings with his Greek counterpart Kaklamanis, with the Greek President, Costis Stephanopulos and Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangallos. /mt/sh/

    [07] DP DEPUTY INTERRUPTS HUNGER STRIKE

    TIRANA, SEPT 8 (ATA) - By Eva Allushi - The deputy of the Democratic party (DP) Pjeter Arbnori said in a statement on Monday that he interrupted his hunger strike, which lasted 20 days.

    Arbnori hailed the suggestions of President Rexhep Meidani and the agreement signed by Pandeli Majko and Genc Pollo, both head of parliamentary groups of the Socialist and Democratic party, respectively, on the law on Radio Television and considered his strike over.

    He expressed his belief that the parliament would consider the suggestions.

    "Compromise is the only successful way to build democracy," Arbnori said adding that this is "a great victory."

    The former Speaker Arbnori, sentenced to 28 years in prison by the communist regime, started his hunger strike in a hall of the parliament.

    "I started this hunger strike in protest of Albanian Television, which censured a plenary session by failing to give a full coverage to the proceedings," he said explaining the reasons, which forced him to undertake this extreme action.

    Arbnori considered a point of compromise to interrupt the strike the moment when the speeches, statements and opinions of his and colleagues of opposition would be covered fully by Radio television. ake/jz/ak/Z/

    [08] RED CROSS ACTIVITY A SACRED MISSION, LIKE THAT OF MOTHER TERESA - Nano

    TIRANA, SEPT. 8 (ATA)- Prime Minister Fatos Nano has said the Red Cross Activity is a human mission and part of the activities for the benefit of humanity. It is a sacred mission, like that of Mother Teresa.

    In a meeting today with the deputy president of the International Red Cross Committee, Dr. Eric Roethllsberger, Nano evaluated the role of the International Red Cross and thanked for the assistance provided for the Albanian people.

    He also evaluated the very active presence of the Red Cross during this period and, stressing the humanitarian aid activity worth 10 million dollars beginning in March and which covers a considerable part of Albania's population.

    Roethllsberger underlined the fact that the Red Cross considers its mission part of the efforts of the Albanian government and people to overcome the crisis and build a civic, democratic society, proswerous and without social conflicts. a.ke/jz/lm/Z/

    [09] ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GOES PARALLEL WITH RETURN OF ORDER - Elbirt

    TIRANA, SEPT. 8 (ATA) - By Eva Allushi: The Albanian economy is moving ahead but the situation in the country should be stabilised totally, Carlos Elbirt, representative of the World Bank said to Maqo Lakrori, the Secretary of State for the Euro Atlantic Integration.

    "Economic pace will come parallel with the total return of order all over the country," Elbirt said.

    Referring to the projects of the World Bank, he said that a project worth $20 million will be carried out in the public sector.

    Lakrori said that the Euro Atlantic orientation is the future of Albania.

    "We are realist of the time this integration needs, but should go on in this direction because this movement should bring about an economic growth," the Secretary of State said. ake/jz/ak/Z/

    [10] ALBANIAN PRESIDENT DECREES LAW ON PRESS FREEDOM

    TIRANA, SEPT. 8 (ATA) - President of the Republic Rexhep Meidani decrees on Monday the law on freedom of press and abrogates the existing law on the press.

    The new law says "Press is free. Its freedom is defended by law." ake/jz/ak/

    [11] SP-DP COMPROMISE ON ARBNORI AMENDMENT ATTAINED

    TIRANA, SEPT. 8 (ATA)- By A. Simoni, A compromise was reached today between the Socialist and the Democratic parties on the amendement on time division between the government coalition and opposition parties in Albanian television news bulletin.

    The chairmen of the two major parliamentary groups, SP and DP, respectively Pandeli Majko and Genc Pollo, signed the agreement on the amendment.

    According to the agreement the two parliamentary groups will respect the suggestions of President Meidani regarding the amendment when he referred it back to parliament.

    Meidani says the amendment should make clear the division of time in television news bulletin between the government coalition and opposition parties.

    "An expression of the new spirit of the policy we have expressed," Pandeli Majko called the agreement. While the DP leader, Sali Berisha, considered it a "great victory".

    After the agreement was signed Arbnori ended his hunger strike. a.ke/jz/lm/Z
