  • [01] INTERIOR MINISTER MEETS EU EXPERTS TEAM

    TIRANA, MARCH 27 (ATA)- By A. Frasheri, Albanian Interior Minister Belul Celo met today with the European Union experts team, which has come to assess the current situation in Albania, according to the spokesman of the Interior Ministry.

    "It is indispensable that the EU provides an emergency aid of special means for the police and anti-terror special units," Celo said, after familiarising the EU experts with the current situation in Albania, pointing to all the measures undertaken by the Interior Ministry for the complete operation of the police commissariats and special units of this ministry.

    The EU experts, after being familiarised in detail with the present logistics situation of the Albanian police, expressed their commitment to swiftly send a priority aid, guaranteeing full support for the Albanian police.

    At this meeting they also discussed at length on the mission and mandate of the multinational police force which would act to ensure that the humanitarian aid to be sent to Albania gets through.

    Later, the meeting continued at experts' level, discussing the priorities of the Albanian police aid. s.sh/kled/lm/sh/

    [02] GOVERNMENT MEMBERS MEET WITH MAYORS

    TIRANA, MARCH 27 (ATA)-Government members met today with mayors of all over Albania to discuss the situation in the country and the necessary measures to improve it, the Government Press and Information office reports.

    The participants at the meeting, held at the seat of the Council of Ministers, stressed that the main task of both the government and the local government was to restore order, secure the immediate needs of the people and normalise the situation at home. In this relation a full cooperation with all the institutions was required.

    The government members discussed the solution of the problems raised and asked an open and quick communication on the constant improvement and normalisation of the situation. s.sh/kled/lm/sh/

    [03] ALBANIAN PRIME MINISTER MEETS EU AID EXPERTS

    TIRANA, MARCH 27 (ATA)- By A. Baci, Albanian Prime Minister Bashkim Fino met today with the European team, headed by Dutch diplomat Jan de Marchant et d'Ansembourg. The mission of the delegation is to asses Albania's needs for emergency humanitarian economic aid and the security of order to realise it.

    Fino thanked them for the EU and OSCE support for him and the National Reconciliation Government and familiarised the team with efforts of the Albanian government to improve the situation, also enabling the aid delivery.

    Fino made known the measures to reorganise the public order forces and their needs, reactivate the local government and the economic life of the country.

    "The aim of our mission here is to prepare to switch onto the exewcutive phase of all the EU, OSCE and EU promises to the Government of National Reconciliation," said D'Ansembourg, who heads the team of 13 experts in various fields who are expected to stay for several days in Albania.

    D'Ansembourg said that the authority the Government of National Reconciliation enjoys in the centre and the support it now enjoys should be also transmitted to the local governments, considering this a very significant factor for the realisation of its mission.

    D'Ansembourg and other delegation members from the OSCE asked Albanian premier's opinion of the needs or military assistance and the possibility of realising free elections within the set deadline.

    Fino reconfirmed the demand for a security force, which in cooperation with the Albanian forces, would ensure the arrival and distribution of the relief.

    Fino said that the Government aimed at holding free and democratic elections within June and asked the OSCE representatives that an experts team be sent by the beginning of April to help in all the necessary aspects required for holding the elections.

    Fino asked the experts to discuss in detail all the problems in their meetings with the respective ministers of his cabinet and at the same time to meet with the main political forces of Albania. s.sh/kled/lm/sh/

    [04] PRESIDENT BERISHA MEETS WITH U.S. AMBASSADRESS IN TIRANA

    TIRANE, MARCH 27 (ATA) - Albanian President Sali Berisha today met with the U.S. Ambassadress in Tirane, Mariza Lino and discussed with her the latest developments in Albania, President's Press and Information Office reports.

    President Berisha stressed that the support of the platform of the parties and not the efforts for its modification are an indispensible condition and of a vital importance to bring the country out of the crisis. He reiterated to Ms Lino that the friendship and cooperation with the U.S. "have an unchanged importance for us, as well as we are resolute to treat the distinctions in an oopen spirit so that to serve this cooperation."

    Ambassadress Lino declared to President Berisha that the United States completely supports the nine-point agreement of the Albanian political parties.

    "The United States," she said, "is totally committed to support Albania in the construction of democracy and the market economy." /ssh/kled/xh/sh/

    [05] ALBANIAN DEFENCE MINISTER MEETS EU DELEGATION

    TIRANA, MARCH 27 (ATA)-Albanian Defence Minister Shaqir Vukaj met today with the EU delegation and treated aspects of the situation in Albania as well as the efforts to improve it.

    Responding to questions and interest of the EU experts, Vukaj stressed that the main point was to secure calm and stability and collect the weaponry.

    He said that the heavy weaponry, tanks and aviation were under the control of the army.

    Vukaj stressed that they were looking forward to the OSCE decision to sign the proper agreement to send a police force to Albania which, in cooperation with the Albanian forces, could take the necessary measures to secure aid distribution to the people.

    Also attending the meeting were the Secretary of State for Defence, Ali Kazazi, and the Chief of the General Staff, Major-General Adem Copani. /s.sh/kled/lm/sh/

    [06] MEETING OF ALBANIAN DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER WITH GREEK AMBASSADOR IN TIRANE

    TIRANE, MARCH 27 (ATA) - Albanian Deputy Foreign Minister Albert Rakipi today called in a meeting in the Foreign Ministry the Greek Ambassador in Tirane, Kostandin Prevendurakis. Mr Rakipi reiterated to the Greek Ambassador the stand and predisposition of the Albanian Government and state institutions for the relations and cooperation between the two countries and peoples. He assured Mr Prevendurakis of the understanding of the Albanian party for the bilateral relations laying the stress on the fact that his country has appreciated the Greek support for the democratic governing of Albania.

    Taking the floor, the Greek Ambasador said that "there is a bilatareal understanding regarding the development of the relations between the two countries."

    "This stand," he continued, "has been confirmed to me also by President Berisha and Prime Minister Fino. Greece, as a neighbouring country of Albania, is trying both in the bilateral and multilateral aspects, to encourage other countries to support Albania in the se difficult moments."

    "I am sure," said Mr Prevendurakis, "that we will keep on this line also in the future and this is important both for Albania, Greece and the whole region. This is also expressed in the declaration of the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry of Greece." /xh/
