  • [01] TWO "PIRATE" BUSES BLOCKED IN KAKAVIJA

    TIRANA, DEC 25 (ATA) By Hysni Cani: Police of Gjirokastra (Southern Albania) continues to keep blocked since Tuesday two "pirate" buses, which were traveling from Greece to Albania in the border check point of Kakavija.

    "Both buses, which did not have licences, belong according to the documents to the Greek firm "Euroline", chief of the Gjirokastra police commissariat, Ilir Kokalari, told ATA.

    According to the interior sources of the road inspection, it has been a document of the Minister of Industry, Transport and Trade, Suzana Panariti, who pointed out the existence of these pirate buses that damaged the interest of agencies having regular contract with this ministry, such as "Euroline" and "Albania Interline", which caused the starting of a severe control on these buses.

    According to the law, explains Kokalari, it is envisages a fine of 50 - 100 000 leks for them. Anyhow, it is expected a commission from three ministries, Interior Ministry and Ministry of Finances included, which will decide Thursday about the pirate buses of the road transport. /s.sh/kled/mt/k

    [02] ALBANIAN JOURNALISTS ASSOCIATIONS DISCUSS ON ETHIC CODE OF JOURNALISTS

    TIRANA, DEC 26 (ATA) - The League of the Albanian Journalists and the Association of the Albanian Professionist Journalists discussed recently in a meeting on drafting a new ethic code of journalists in Albania.

    A mission from both associations discussed recently in the Albanian Institute of Media, the pattern on which they should consider for an Albanian ethic code: the German code, the English, Danish and the code of the International Federation of Journalists.

    The Chairman of the Journalists League, Ylli Rakipi and the Chairman of the Albanian Journalists Association, Armand Shullaku, recognized and signed officially in this meeting the ethic code of the International Journalists Federation.

    Both the above mention bodies are members of this federation. They decided in the meeting that by the beginning of January, a group defined by both associations should draft the project of the ethic code of the Albanian journalists, which will be presented for discussion and will be ratified by the publishers and chief editors of the Albanian newspapers, as well as from media directors.

    Both associations have worked since a year on a common project on ethics supported by the Albanian Foundation of the Civil Society. /kei/mt/k

    [03] ALBANIA ADHERES TO THREE CONVENTIONS OF INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF LABOUR

    TIRANA, DEC 26 (ATA) - By Mimoza Allushi: Albania adheres to the Conventions of the International Organization of Labour, no. 81, "On the inspection in labour, industry and trade", no. 135 "On the representatives of employees" and no. 142 "on the organizations of rural employees".

    "The approval of adherence to these conventions is the expression of guarantee from the democratic rule to respect the obligations which come out from its membership in this organization", said Arlinda Ymeraj, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs.

    The convention no.81 "On inspection in labour, industry and trade" envisages the duties of the inspection system in work, the rights and duties of the labour inspectors, their employment and discharge from work.

    The convention no.135 "On the representatives of employees" treats their protection from different measures that can damage them, including here the discharge from work, as well as on facilities they should have in exercising the trade union activity.

    The convention no.42 "On the organizations of rural employees" respects the trade union freedoms, and force the state to encourage these organizations.

    According to the officials of this ministry, the adherence in these conventions is done after it was seen the support for these conventions by the Albanian legislation of labour. /jz/mt/k

    [04] THOUSAND DOLLARS OF SMUGGLING GOODS SEQUESTRATED

    TIRANA, DEC 26 (ATA) - The General Directory of Customs has sequestrated recently smuggling goods valuing some 160 000 dollars (including fines for not very grave violations), reports Albania paper.

    The smuggling goods are cigarettes, coffee, spirits and refreshments. Most of the goods were sequestrated in the border check points of Gjirokastra (southern Albania) and Macedonia (southeastern Albania).

    In the course of operations to intercept smuggling goods, the customs police arrested recently three customs officials in the border check point of Kapshtica (southeastern Albania) who exercised smuggling activity. The value of the smuggling goods which came from Greece to Albania by the help of these persons, reaches some 25 000 USD, ends the paper. /jz/mt/z/

    [05] PREMIER MEKSI MEETS TRADE UNION MEMBERS OF MINES AND OIL SECTOR

    TIRANA, DEC 26 (ATA) - The Albanian Premier Aleksander Meksi today met with representatives of the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Albania, led by Gezim Kalaja and representatives of the Free Oil Trade Union led by Elizer Kule.

    As the press office close to the Prime Minister reports, authorized by the National Council of the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Albania and by the participants in a recent meeting with the miners of Batra, Kalaja thanked the government and especially Premier Meksi for the development of the reforms and the care shown for the miners.

    Further on they treated a number of questions worrying the trade unions of mines and oil. The trade union representatives supported the process of privatization of industry and chrome.

    With regard to the copper industry, the trade unionists reported that the procedure to reexamine the existing contract has started and is going on.

    With regard to the question of pre-resigning pensions for the miners, the trade unionists were informed that a draft law for an amendment to the law on Social Insurances is prepared and sent to the People's Assembly for approval.

    The two parties agreed that the geological service be state-run, whereas the perspective of the reform in this field will be decided in a joint meeting to be held soon. ake/kled/xh/

    [06] OBJECTS OF "GJALLICA" COMPANY INAUGURATES IN VLORA DISTRICT

    TIRANA, DEC 25 (ATA) By Harilla Koci: The Albanian company "Gjallica" inaugurated Wednesday the modern complex of benzine service station built in the vicinity of Skrofotine village, Vlora district (southwestern Albania).

    This complex also includes a bar, a restaurant, a motel, etc. Some 6 million dollars are invested on this complex.

    "Gjallica" company also inaugurated the opening of constructions for building the brick factory in the vicinity of Mifol village of the same district. This factory will cover a surface of 3,5 hectare of land.

    To facilitate the work in building the factory, a new road, 7 meters wide, will be opened and macadamized. The workings will be carried out in cooperation with the Italian and Greek firms.

    The factory will have a capacity of 250 000 pieces of bricks a day. /a.ke/eva/mt/Z

    [07] REQUESTS OF STUDENTS IN PRISTINA UNIVERSITY SUPPORTED BY OTHER POLITICAL FORCES

    TIRANA, DEC 26 (ATA) - The Parliamentary Party of Kosova and the Social Democratic Party together with the Union of the Independent Trade Unions of Kosova (UITUK) declared Wednesday in public that they were in favour of the recent movements in the political scene of Albanians in Kosova which were also connected with the requests of students, correspondent of the "Voice of America" reports.

    UIDUK chairman Hajrullah Gorani said in the news conference that these Trade Unions support recenlty those who demand the quick promotion of the political scene in Kosova.

    Talking about the the Democratic League of Kosova and its leadership, Gorani stressed the fact that the politicians who lead the movements in Kosova are the politicians of the desire and the good will of an idealism and a way who seem to solve its problems very easy by intellectual constructions.

    But he added that the reality in Kosova is desperate and according to him all the current movements in Kosova are natural and logical course.

    With regard to any possible split of the Albanian political factor, Gorani requested coordination of political activities.

    The Rector of the University of Pristina, Prof. Dr. Ejup Statovci told Voice of America that "I have read very attentively the nine requests of the students of Pristina University published in Bujku paper. The requests express the concern of the students for the current situation in Kosova. Therefore they address to Leader Rugova concrete requests hoping that by their solution things will go better".

    Some 600 Albanian students of Kosova requested Tuesday Rugova to radicalize the protests against the regime of President Slobodan Milosevic in Kosova.

    These students have sent a petition to Rugova, demanding urgently the Albanian parliament, elected in 1992, to convene.

    The students have requested Rugova to include in this assembly the main rival, Adem Demaci, who has become recently chairman of the parliamentarian party of Kosova, a formation known for its incompatibility regarding Belgrade.

    Some 3300 members of the Albanian Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) in Kosova, of the Community of Branches and sub branches of Decan, together with the presidency, have decided to unite with the center represented by Adem Demaci, ADP chairman in Decan Selman Berisha reported Tuesday.

    The ADP Presidency in Decan and the majority of the membership representatives have greeted in a meeting held Monday the direct activation of Demaci in politics and mainly his request to constitute the parliament in Kosova and a more active and peaceful resistance. /kei/mt/k

    [08] CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT OF WELFARE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE IN SHKODRA

    SHKODRA, DEC 26 (ATA) - By M Malja: The welfare of peasant families in the district of Shkodra, Northwestern Albania, has kept improving.

    According to a bulletin published by the Council of this district, numerous electric house appliances have been bought by peasant families as compared with 1989.

    While in 1989 there were only 200 colour tv sets, now their number has amounted to 25 900, thus reducing the number of black and white TV sets. The number of washing machines has also increased as compared with 1989, from 5 800 to 14 700, that of refrigerators has increased from 6 500 in 1989 to 21 300 now, the electric stoves bought so far amounts to 19 300, etc.

    The population of Shkodra numbers 100 thousand inhabitans. ssh/kled/xh/sh/

    [09] A GREEK-ALBANIAN TRAFFICKERS GROUP INTERCEPTED IN ATHENS

    SARANDA, DEC 26 (ATA) - By Sh Hajno: Police of the Greek capital intercepted a group of Greek-Albanian traffickers of narcotic plants recently and sequestered from it a great amount of packed canabis-sativa, according to various sources of the Greek television, watched also in Saranda. Among the detained, according to the TV channel, were two Albanians.

    The canabis sativa of the group is presumed to have been brought from Albania through possible land or sea ways.

    There have been not few the cases when Albanian police of border districts with Greece, such as Saranda, Delvina and Gjirokastra, have detained narcotic plants traffickers in the past two years, whose aim has been the Greek market through illegal land and sea border ways.

    Only some days ago, Saranda border police intercepted 17 kg of canabis sativa in the village of Cuka, about 5 km from the district centre.

    Recently, Albanian Parliament has adopted a law according to which the people who cultivate narcotic plants will be sentenced to 10 years in prison. ssh/kled/xh/sh/
