  • [01] PREMIER MEKSI MEETS DIRECTOR OF WORLD BANK FOR EAST AND CENTRAL EUROPE

    TIRANA, SEPT 9 (ATA) Albanian Premier Aleksander Meksi met Monday morning Director of the World Bank for East and Central Europe Mr Saverino.

    "I want to express my gratitude and that of my government for the European Union continuous support, which has been of special importance for democracy and reformation in Albania" said Meksi at the beginning, adding that Albania is very much interested to continue and deepen cooperation with the EU.

    After briefing the main macroeconomics figures and the main goals of the government program, Albanian Premier said that we are able now to absorb more efficaciously European aid, have ambitious programs, experience, capable people and a favourable political-economic situation.

    It is natural that various difficulties accompany the continuity of reformation. This is why we have focused our attention on the social aspects of reforms, said Meksi, and assured Saverino that Albania will continue in the road of reformation and realise its program of privatisation and move in the road of market economy.

    Meksi specially focused on the field of infrastructure, privatization, health and education, and asked the EU assistance for the housing problem. He asked reconsideration of joint programs aiming a restructuration according present level of development in Albania.

    Saverino congretulated the economic results in Albania under the leadership of democratic government. "Your results are brilliant, unexpected even for us" he said, adding that he would recommend development of bank reformation to boost privatisation.

    He shared the same opinion with Meksi on the reconsideration of housing programs. He said that both sides should reconcider in October the future programs for Albania.

    Saverino concluded by saying that EU is open for suggestions and proposals from the Albanian government for the widening of cooperation.

    [02] ALBANIAN ART EXHIBITION IN GERMANY

    TIRANA, SEPT 10 (ATA) - By F. Nikolla The Albanian art will be represented by a special exhibition which will be opened in Munich, Germany on November 1996.

    "This will be one of the largest exhibitions opened up to now abroad", sources of the Ministry of Culture told ATA. It will open in the Museum of Munich, one of the largest in Germany.

    "Ethnographic, folkloric objects, handicrafts and works of art of the XIV-XV and XIth century, about 30 icons from Onufri, Zoografi and Selenicasi will be presented there," the above mentioned source said.

    In special halls of the museum will be also exhibited Albanian waiting rooms belonging to different regions and characteristic Albanian songs and dances will be shown through videos. /mt/Z/

    [03] GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIZES TEXTBOOKS FOR MINORITY PUPILS

    TIRANA, SEPT 10(ATA) By P Shuteriqi - A decision of Albanian Council of Ministers No 502, dated August 5, 1966, on the opening of classes with pupils of the Greek minority close to Albanian eight-year schools in the Southern Albanian towns of Gjirokastra, Saranda and Delvina is an expression of concrete and continuous care for the education of minorities.

    It is accompanied by preparation of textbooks in their mother tongue

    Minister of Education and Sports Edmond Lulja said for ATA that "This decision creates the possibility to all minority pupils to follow education in their mother tongue regularely and normally."

    Meanwhile, measures are being taken for the normal start of the new school year in four secondary schools of the Greek and Macedonian minority.

    Albanian publishing houses are preparing among others programs of textbooks in Greek and Macedonian. One of them is the History book for the eight year schools for the 5th, 6th and 7th for the Greek minority. Social Education 3-8 and work-books for mathematics 1 and 2, alongside the textbook of this subject for the third form are printed in Macedonian. jz/fh/Z/

    [04] GJEBREA TO CONDUCT MISS EUROPE '96 SHOW

    TIRANE SEP 9 /ATA - F. Nikolla/ Albanian well known singer and composer Ardit Gjebra 33, will be Miss Europe show man. The show will be staged in Tirana at the Palaces of Congresses on September 28.

    "This fact entertains me more than scares," said Gjebrea, who will soon present the pageant contest of 37 European beauties.

    "The show will be in Anglish too, besides Albanian," said Gjebrea, who will be accompanied by Miss California 95. JZ/gen /Z/

    [05] UNFPA: NEW MISSION IN ALBANIA

    TIRANA, SEP 10 /ATA-A.Milo/ - A mission from United Nations has come to Albania to study country's demographic development.

    The mission is visiting Albania upon the request of the Albanian government, who demands cooperation with United Nations Fund For Population (UNFPA) in relation to country's demographic development during these last five years.

    At the end of their mission, which will continue for four weeks, UNFPA's experts will present a report to the Albanian government in relation to the country's demographic developments UNFPA since 1991 is financing in Albania a program worth $ 3 million on family planning. gen/

    [06] ALBANIA, WHO MIDDLE-TERM COOPERATION PLAN

    TIRANA, SEPT 10 (ATA) - By A. Milo An Albanian delegation headed by Minister of Health and Environment Maksim Cikuli is attending 46th session of the Regional Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) which is held in Copenhagen.

    A middle-term cooperation plan between Albanian government and WHO will be discussed during the session, sources of this ministry said. /mt/

    TIRANA, SEPT 10 (ATA) Rilindja Demokaratike highlights the celebration of the 50the anniversary of the first anticommunists uprising of Postribe(Northern Albania).

    It carries an editorial entitled "Crisis of confidence inside the SP." The paper carries the address of President Berisha to the Albanian peacekeeping troops, who left yesterday, for Croatia under the title "September 9, will be a historical day for Albanian Army." It also writes "Challenge for the new SP leaders" and reports on Berisha-Saverino meeting under the title "World Bank determined to support Albania."

    Zeri i Popullit editorial is entitled "State, unprepared for free elections" and the another article "SP answering to time challenges." It also carries the article "Conduct of free and democratic elections, the main element in political reformation of Albania."

    Poli i Qendres prints a letter of the Irish Foreign Minister, Dick Spring, which said that "European Union will reconsider May 26, elections." It also carries "For Kosova the only solution, peaceful solution."

    Republika publishes the article "Republicans prepare their candidates for the Election Commission."

    Rilindja writes that Albanian soldiers will defend peace in Balkan. It also carries the article "Constitution-basis of state and social organisation in Kosova."

    Koha Jone entitles its editorial "Dokle refuses the SP Presidency." It also carries "President starts the election campaign and severely attacks the opposition."

    Albania's editorial writes "The SP isolated like in 1992" and entitles another article "Postribe, first anticommunists uprising in Europe."

    Gazeta Shqiptare writes the articles "Trade Union: General strike on the first day of school" and "Uncertainty inside the SP between Nano and Pellumbi."

    Dita Informacion carries the article "After returning from the US former SP deputy chairman Namik Dokle uncertain between the SP chairman Nano and ex-deputy chairman Servet Pellumbi."

    Sindikalisti carries an interview with deputy President of the Trade union BSPSH under the title "Meksi (premier) should quit from his style of unserious governing."
