[01] Democrat Supporters Block Socialist Rally
DURRES, Albania, May 22 - Anti-socialist protesters on Wednesday blocked a
convoy of cars carrying opposition Socialist leaders bound for a rally in the
Adriatic port of Durres. Dozens of young men, chanting ``Freedom and
democracy!''and "victory," waving blue Democrat Party flags, drew vehicles
across the main road from Tirana to Durres to stop the cars. Some of them
jumped onto the cars, hammering windows with their fists and shouting ``Down
with the Socialists!,'' ``Go home, spies!.'' A Socialist supporter from
Durres was taken to hospital with wounds to his head and face, caused by
broken glass. Riot police tried to protect the convoy but one man smashed a
window of a vehicle in front of the car carrying Socialist deputy leader
Servet Pellumbi. The convoy finally headed into Durres by an alternative route
followed later by Democratic supporters who demonstrated noisily outside the
sports all during the rally. Pellumbi attempted to address a crowd of 5,000
Socialist supporters but the hall was plunge
d into darkness and sound systems failed after an apparent electricity
failure. Pellumbi, unable to make his speech, shook hands with cheering
supporters in the darkened hall and returned to Tirana. The Socialists have
accused the Democratic Party of trying to manipulate the election outcome by
harassing Socialist supporters and disrupting the party's campaign. But
Berisha's Democrats have firmly denied the accusations and blamed the reformed
communists for the violence that has characterised the run-up to the
poll. (Albanian Times/Reuters)
[02] E.U. Signs Disbursement of Cross-Border Funds for Albania
TIRANA, May 22 - A memorandum of understanding on the E.U.'s cross-border
program signed Wednesday in Tirana, has paved the way for the disbursement of
funds aimed at facilitating Albania's communications with E.U. members Greece
and Italy. The funds, amounting to ECU 84 million, are E.U. grants supporting
programs approved in 1994 and 1995. Most of the programs consist in road
rehabilitations both in the east-west and the north-south axes. Other programs
concern construction of customs checkpoints and sewage processing project.

[03] Albania's IFOR Contingent to be Stationed in Zadar
BONN, May 22 - Albania will participate in the Bosnia international
peacekeeping force with 30 soldiers who will be part of the third German
contingent, the defense ministry in Bonn announced. The Albanian ground troops
will guard a German airborne facility in Zadar on the Croat coast of the
Adriatic together with the German troops. The agreement was reached by the
German foreign minister Volker Ruehe during his Albanian visit in March.

[04] Turkey, Albania Unhappy With Timing of Sophia Meeting
SOFIA, May 22 - Turkey will not attend a planned meeting of Balkan foreign
ministers in Sofia next month unless Bulgaria changes the date, Ankara's
ambassador said on Wednesday. ``Bulgaria has set the date for June 8 and 9
despite Turkey's insistence that this was not a convenient time and our
foreign minister would not be able to attend,'' Mehmet Ali Irtemcelik told a
news conference. He said Turkey was hosting a United Nations summit on the
human environment in Istanbul from June 3 to 14 that would prevent its foreign
minister from going to Sofia. Albania is also unhappy with the timing of the
Balkan meeting, which falls only a couple of weeks after the country's general
election, he added. The foreign ministers of Romania, Greece, rump
Yugoslavia, Macedonia, and Bosnia have also been invited to the Sofia meeting,
which is expected to focus on boosting security, transport and telecommunication
ties. Slovenia declined to attend and Croatia will send an observer to the
gathering. Western diplomats in S
ofia said the row concealed deeper tensions between the Balkan countries as
Bulgaria's socialist government steps up its rapprochement with Eastern
Orthodox neighbours Greece and Serbia. (Albanian Times/Reuters)
[05] NEBEX Reports on Albanian Projects
CALGARY, May 22 - NEBEX Resources Ltd. (NBX:ASE) reports that in the
continuing drilling program underway in Albania, four holes intersected copper-
zinc-gold mineralization. These are in the Gurthi area of the 400
square kilometre Mirdita concession. The one hole for which assays are
available had an 11 metre intersection which assayed 8.77% copper, 1.25% zinc,
2.3 grams/tonne gold (0.067 oz/ton gold) and 21 grams/tonne silver
(0.613 oz/ton silver). Assays are awaited for three other holes and drilling
is continuing in this area. This hole, 96-11, is the best yet as the drilling
probes a massive sulphide zone,'' notes Brian Douglas, NEBEX president.
Drilling is planned for the Munelle area of the Mirdita
concession following completion of geological and geophysical
surveys underway, expected about late July. Geological and geophysical
surveys have started in the Gjazuj-Shengieri area on the Kacinari concession.
This is of interest for gold. These surveys, to be followed by drilling, are
expected to be completed by August. Geological and geophysical surveys on the
Radomir and Kukes concessions should start next month. These concessions are
at higher elevations than Mirdita and Kacinari and remain snow covered,
unusual for this time of year. (Albanian Times)
