[01] PM ERDOGAN ATTENDS PROVINCIAL
PARTY CONGRESSES IN SOUTHEAST
Prime
Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the weekend
participated in his party’s Diyarbakir and Siirt
provincial congresses. Erdogan devoted most of
his speeches to recent terrorist events, giving
messages of unity and solidarity. Erdogan
criticized the abuse of children during
demonstrations by the terrorist PKK, saying,
“Those who are supported by terrorism still
continue their abuse, particularly against
children.” “As long as we walk together as
Turks, Kurds, Circassians, Lazes, Georgians,
Bosniacs and Albanians, without discriminating
against any particular ethnic group, nobody will
be able to divide us,” said Erdogan. The prime
minister added, “While protecting peace and
stability, you have also protected the republic
and democracy. For that I would like to
congratulate Diyarbakir residents once more.”
After his party’s Diyarbakir congress, Premier
Erdogan went to the Diyarbakir Industrial Zone
and cut the ribbon on 21 factories. /Star/
[02] ARINC VISITS SWEDEN
Parliament
Speaker Bulent Arinc left Ankara yesterday to
pay an official visit to Sweden at the
invitation of his Swedish counterpart, Bjorn von
Sydow, who extended full support to Turkey’s
European Union membership drive on behalf of all
Swedish lawmakers when he visited Turkey last
June. Arinc will also meet with King Carl XVI
Gustaf of Sweden and Deputy Prime Minister Bosse

[03] IRAN’S LARIJANI TO VISIT ANKARA
Ali
Larijani, secretary general of Iran’s National
Security Council and the country's chief nuclear
negotiator, is set to arrive in Ankara today for
talks with Turkish officials, including Prime
Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign
Minister Abdullah Gul. He is also expected to
meet with his Turkish counterpart Yigit Alpogan.
During their meetings, the Turkish side will
reportedly urge Iran to cooperate with the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over
its nuclear program. Larijani’s scheduled visit
to Turkey late last month was postponed due to
US Secretary of State Condolezza Rice’s visit to
Ankara at about the same time. /Turkiye/
[04] PARLIAMENT DELEGATION TO TRAVEL
TO FRANCE TO WORK AGAINST ARMENIAN BILL
Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc said
yesterday that a delegation of four
parliamentarians is planning to travel to France
tomorrow. Speaking to reporters, Arinc,
currently paying an official visit to Sweden,
stated that France's Parliament is set to debate
a bill concerning the so-called Armenian
genocide on May 18, adding that the Turkish
parliamentarians will hold a series of talks
with their France counterparts to convince them
not to pass the bill. Regarding the issue, Arinc
also sent a message to France Parliament Speaker
Jean-Louis Debre last month. /Turkiye/
[05] TURKEY’S AMBASSADOR TO CANADA
RECALLED TO DISCUSS RECOGNITION OF SO-CALLED
ARMENIAN GENOCIDE BY PM HARPER
Turkey’s Ambassador to Canada Aydemir Erman
has been recalled for consultations after
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said that
his country recognized the so-called Armenian
genocide. Erman was brought back to Turkey to
discuss possible steps to be taken over Harper’s
statements. An official said that the issue was
“serious” for Turkey, adding that the Armenian
claims were direct attacks against the Turkish
nation’s identity and history. In related news,
Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc said that he
would travel to France tomorrow to help prevent
passage of a law criminalizing denial of the
so-called Armenian genocide. /Aksam/
[06] SENER: “AS OF 2004, ABOUT 17
MLN PEOPLE WERE LIVING BENEATH POVERTY LINE”
Answering a question motion of a Motherland
Party (ANAVATAN) deputy, Deputy Prime Minister
Abdullatif Sener said yesterday that according
to figures from that year, about 17 million
people in Turkey were living beneath the poverty
line in 2004. “The proportion of people living
beneath the poverty line to the whole population
was 26.9% in 2002, and fell to 25.6% in 2004,”
he added. Saying that the Turkish Statistics
Institution (TUIK) gauged the number of the poor
using various methods, Sener stated that
according to one of these methods 17 million
people were living beneath the poverty line in

[07] EU'S KALLAS TO VISIT TURKEY FOR
EUROPE DAY
Siim Kallas, European commissioner for
administrative affairs, audit and anti-fraud, is
scheduled to arrive in Turkey tomorrow for a
three-day visit, announced the Delegation of the
European Commission to Ankara. “Kallas’ visit on
Europe Day [May 9] shows the commission’s
support to Turkey’s efforts to modernize its
economy and prepare for accession,” the

[08] MHP LEADER BAHCELI: “BEWARE OF
THOSE TRYING TO BAIT NATIONALISTS INTO A
CONFLICT”
Opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP)
leader Devlet Bahceli yesterday said that some
groups are trying to lure the MHP into street
fights. Speaking at the MHP’s Eskisehir
provincial congress, Bahceli criticized Prime
Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying that he
was questioning the history of the republic.
“Beware of those trying to bait nationalists
into a conflict,” he warned. “We draw a
distinction between separatist terrorists and
Kurdish-speaking Turkish citizens. We’ll end
separatist terrorism,” said Bahceli.

[09] PARLIAMENT FACING TWO
CONTROVERSIAL BILLS THIS WEEK
Among other measures, Parliament is to debate
two controversial bills this week that have made
headlines and stirred controversy for weeks. One
of the key issues to be addressed is the social
security bill, which was sent back to Parliament
for re-debate by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer,
while the other proposes changes to the
Anti-Terror Law. On Tuesday an 11-article bill
stipulating the privatization of electricity
providers will also be debated in Parliament. A
bill to lengthen the leave period for female
Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) personnel will also

[10] FILM DIRECTOR ATIF YILMAZ LAID
TO REST
Famous movie director Atif Yilmaz, who passed
away on Friday, was laid to rest yesterday and
remembered in a ceremony attended by many
members of the film community. Yilmaz had a
distinguished 55-year career as a director,
scriptwriter, and producer. /All papers/
