  • [01] ERDOGAN THANKS SCHROEDER FOR HIS SUPPORT FOR TURKEY’S EU BID

After arriving yesterday in Istanbul, outgoing German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder attended a traditional Muslim fast-breaking iftar dinner hosted by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Addressing the gathering, Erdogan said that he was pleased to host Schroeder and thanked him for his support for Turkey’s European Union membership bid. For his part, Schroeder said that Germany would continue to support Ankara’s EU bid, adding that Turkey’s Union membership was very important for bringing together civilizations. Schroeder stated that recent developments required Turkey to be an EU member and that he believed Ankara would successfully complete the negotiating process. Schroeder is set soon to be succeeded as chancellor by Angela Merkel. /Cumhuriyet/

[02] GUL MEETS WITH SERBIAN OFFICIALS

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, on his last stop in the Balkans, yesterday met with Serbia-Montenegro’s President Vojislav Kostunika, Premier Vojislav Kostunica and his Serbian counterpart Vuk Draskovic. Gul told reporters that they had agreed to develop bilateral political and economic relations. After visiting the Bayrakli Mosque, one of 250 mosques constructed in the Ottoman era and the sole one still standing, the Turkish foreign minister attended a dinner in his honor hosted by Draskovic. Gul and his accompanying delegation returned to Turkey last night. /Turkiye/

[03] ERDOGAN: “FUNDAMENTALISM POSES NO DANGER TO TURKEY”

Speaking to French daily Le Monde yesterday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey had established a strong system to protect against fundamentalism, and that it poses no danger threat to Turkey. Stressing that fundamentalists were present in all religions and countries, Erdogan added, however, that they were in a minority. He added that Turkey’s European Union membership would help to prevent conflicts among different cultures of the world. /Aksam/

    [04] CHIEF NEGOTIATOR BABACAN: “WE’RE A TEAM”

Chief European Union talks negotiator Ali Babacan yesterday held a press conference about Turkey’s negotiating process with the EU. Babacan divided the European Union process into three areas: the Copenhagen criteria being carried out without exception, the harmonization of Turkey’s rules and institutions with the EU, and civil society dialogue. Babacan also laid out the structure of the negotiating delegation, which will be headed by the prime minister: negotiating delegation Chairman Abdullah Gul, Babacan himself as chief negotiator, EU Secretary General Oguz Demiralp, State Planning Organization (DPT) Deputy Undersecretary Lutfi Elvan, Prime Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Emin Zararsiz, Turkey’s EU permanent representative Volkan Bozkir, and Ahmet Sever responsible for communications. /Aksam/

[05] DANISH PM: “TURKEY IS A GREAT DILEMMA FOR THE EU”

Speaking to German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine yesterday, Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that Turkey constituted a great dilemma for the European Union. Asked whether he thought Turkey belonged to Europe, Rasmussen said that it was very important to strengthen relations with Turkey in order to boost the Union’s security. /Milliyet/

[06] DEPUTY PM SAHIN MEETS WITH ALBANIAN PM, PRAISES “FLAWLESS” RELATIONS

Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin, currently in Albania for an official visit, yesterday met with Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha to discuss bilateral relations. Speaking afterwards, Sahin called relations between Turkey and Albania “flawless.” For his part, Berisha congratulated Sahin for the beginning of Ankara’s accession talks with the European Union, adding that Turkey belonged to Europe. Berisha stated that the new Albanian government would try to create a favorable atmosphere for Turkish investors. He added that cooperation with Ankara in fighting organized crime was very important. /Star/

    [07] KURTULMUSOGLU RESIGNS FROM CHP

Opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Ankara deputy Muzaffer Kurtulmusoglu yesterday resigned from the party. With his move, the number of CHP deputies in Parliament fell to 56. Kurtulmusoglu is expected to join the ranks of the Motherland Party (ANVATAN). /Turkiye/

[10] DYP LEADER AGAR QUESTIONS GALATAPORT DEAL

Opposition True Path Party (DYP) Leader Mehmet Agar yesterday gave his support to a main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) effort to introduce a motion questioning the recent Galataport sale and buyer Sami Ofer. Agar said, “We are in favor of the motion being openly debated. We support the motion being introduced.” He added, “We are in favor of every issue being discussed openly, we want society to be transparent. Conditions of contracts are being prepared behind closed doors. Such mistakes should disappear from Turkish politics. We lend our support to the motion. The government has to satisfy us about the Galataport contract. We’re not opposed to foreign investment. A premier or state ministers making deals in hotel rooms like marketing people is wrong.” /Hurriyet/

The first gas was pumped yesterday to the Georgia section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline, which will eventually transport 50 million tons of oil to world markets. International Monetary Fund External Relations Director Tom Dawson yesterday called the beginning of Turkey’s accession talks with the European Union an important development. Speaking at a press conference, Dawson said that an IMF delegation currently in Ankara for the first and second review of the nation’s IMF-supported economic program would also discuss recent economic developments with Turkish officials. The delegation is headed by IMF Turkey Desk Chief Lorenzo Giorgianni. /Milliyet/

[14] FRIEND OR FOE BY ORDER BY NURAY MERT (AKSAM)

Columnist Nuray Mert comments on Turkish-US relations. A summary of her column is as follows:

“I don’t know if you’ve been following it, but US policy activists in Turkey will almost dance with joy just because Syria and Turkey aren’t on good terms and Turkish-US relations have warmed up. Feeling good just because the nation of a neighboring country is in a tight spot and calling this political analysis! What’s this got to do with analysis? Some were distressed just because there was rapprochement between Ankara and Damascus and now they’re happy that the countries have ‘realized their mistake.’ Everybody has an understanding of right and wrong. If you follow the US’ invasive policies, of course you would think that it’s wrong for Turkey to decline joining into putting pressure on Syria. According to this mentality, everything complying with US regional policies is right and the rest are wrong. Turkey’s suggestions for its foreign policy are clear: you will become a friend or foe by order! It seems that the government is following this road. These people will soon speak of the current Bashar Assad regime, the previous Hafez al-Assad era and the Baath regime and claim that it’s right for Syria to be in a bind. So, have you ever seen that these people criticized a regime outside the US crosshairs over principle? Meanwhile, are the Saudi Arabian, Egyptian, United Arab Emirates and Moroccan regimes democratic and above reproach? Why do we have warm relations with them?

Putting distance in its relations with Syria shows that Turkey is on a dark road. It seems we will think about attracting projects totaling billions of dollars without considering other facts of the world and try to silence our conscience by saying that this is a truth of life. What’s more, we have another reason for putting a silencer over our conscience: the European Union membership process! Anyway, we’re trying to become an EU member, that’s why we will pay that bill for our role in the Middle East. We’ve been going forward with the support of the US and Britain since the beginning, and this truth was clear at the beginning of our membership talks with the EU. Is it possible to be under these people’s protection but break with their plans for the Middle East? Actually, France and Germany will participate in the Middle East equation soon and act with the US, but this is another issue to be discussed. Is this a very dark picture? Yes, it is, but our conscience shouldn’t be dark, like those of US policy activists.”
